Canadian election

Just to respond to your recent comments on User:Skol fir's talk page: one key difference is that your system in the US makes it exceedingly difficult for a third party to break through strongly enough to challenge either of the two dominant parties — even when a sizable percentage of the US voting public flirts with a Ross Perot or a Ralph Nader instead, they still can't actually sustain enough momentum to really build long-term viability for their party. Whereas we already had a third party that generally pulls 15 to 20 per cent of the vote even in a "normal" election, and was thus well-positioned to sweep up a big chunk of the swing vote. Yep. Canada's a particularly interesting case since FPTP systems usually fall victim to Duverger's Law, but the Canadian Parliament is definitely not a two-party system. Well, it is now since there's one party in government and one in the opposition but there are still other parties (not that the Bloc, Liberals and Greens can do much now anyway, though). --Kevin W./Talk•CFB uniforms/Talk 21:26, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Well, Duverger still does apply here to an extent; although FPTP hasn't completely prevented third parties from gaining a toehold, they do still almost always win fewer seats than their overall share of the popular vote would actually warrant (while the winner usually gets more seats than they really "deserve".) There's an axiom in Canadian political science that what we really have is a "two-and-a-half-party" system instead of a three-party one — there's enough room for third parties to gain a bit of space in a federal or provincial legislature, but we can still only have two strong parties at any given time, and anybody else gets squeezed. It takes a major wave like what happened last week for a third party to become a real contender — and it remains to be seen over the next four years whether the NDP will actually be able to consolidate its support strongly enough to stay in contention rather than getting squeezed back down into the margins.
