The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue I - March 2006
|
Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in. Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months. Muad'dib
[edit]Dear Karimi,
Thank you for reminding me. Yes I plan to go back to Muad'dib. Usul always has the connotation of Usul al-fiqh 'roots af law' (meaning Qoran, Hadith, ijma' and qiyas) and Mahdi of cause, which is not only a Shi'i issue, but as well in Sunni fistory, think of the Abbasid caliph al-Mahdi, and much more important Ibn Tumart, the Mahdi in the Maghreb (founder of the al-muwahhidun/Almohads). But I think in the case of Muad'dib, the Mahdi of the Sudan (1880s) is the image, which Frank Herbert had in mind. He is very popular as fanatic stereotype in western late 19th, 20th century western literature. He figures in Gordon pashas Diary, and several descriptions of the Sudan Mahdi-revolt. Famous is the movie "Khartoum" of the early sixties with Charlton Heston. This Mahdi in the movie has much in common with the Mahdi-Muad'dib.
Best wishes rom Shabib

Although the drive is officially closed, existing participants can continue tagging until January 31 if they wish, with the extra tags counting towards their tally for barnstar purposes. We'd like to see what lessons can be learned from this drive, so we've set up a feedback workshop. Comments and feedback from participants and non-participants alike are very welcome and appreciated.
