A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diligence
Thanks for creating this page, for taking the time to express so eloquently what many of us think (mistakenly!) that needs no explanation. It shouldn't need it. But it does. WikiUser70176 (talk) 12:14, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Possible WP:FORUMing

Respectfully, I think we are possibly heading into WP:FORUM here, which as a well respected and established admin sets a bad example and invites more such commentary. Further, I think it is always a mistake to think that opposing sides are in no way counterparts to each other. Opponents don't have to be devoid of any merit (even from their own perspective?) and be utterly asymmetrically opposed to be wrong. Taken to its extreme, "false equivalency" arguments verge on denying analogy altogether and often draw on beliefs one would typically fault "regressives" for, like objective morality, which I would class as sloppy or lazy thinking. Cheers. —DIYeditor (talk) 05:34, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

About an old discussion

Hi JzG! So I had once found suggestions that you had made back in 2019 at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard/Archive 281 § Indian fake media. Since then there have been two discussions (1 and 2), one AfD and an RfC related to this. Revisiting this, I don't think the RfC was ever properly implemented and the suggestions you had proposed before were likely a much better way. However I'm unsure how to go about it. Removing the AP2 sanction on top of the Watergate scandal page

Hi JzG, on the Watergate scandal page, I was wondering if you could consider removing the contentious topic notice that you put on that page. The sanctions were narrowed down to post-1992 US politics and the recent edits of the article have shown that the only nonconstructive edits seem to be simple vandalism and content removal, which can be covered by normal policy. Interstellarity (talk) 00:04, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

I am sure a passing admin will happily help if you can't do this yourself, as you say it's no longer relevant. Guy (help! - typo?) 22:47, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Hockey stick controversy

Hi Guy, it was a while ago now but as as the initiator of [[this AFD, I thought I'd let you know that I restored the article/talk edits for attribution purposes; see the talk page. I imagine you'd find the paper that inspired these actions, "Rule Ambiguity, Institutional Clashes, and Population Loss: How Wikipedia Became the Last Good Place on the Internet" fascinating ... it's more or less about how Wikipedia gradually adopted a scientific point of view. We haven't crossed paths in that area much but I'd say your one of the main "non-fringe" editors who helped with this process, and Wikipedia (and the Internet) is very much the better for that. Awesome, thanks! Great article. Wikipedia-as-Usenet, basically: new Shiny Things appeared, and the dwindling band of those of us who care, hang around and try to keep the old place clean :-) Guy (help! - typo?) 20:09, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

G11ed article

Hi, I'm writing an article on Leon Redler (draft here). The article was previously speedily deleted under G11 in 2018 (by you) and A7 in 2010, and I was wondering if there was anything in the deleted versions that may be salvageable. :3 F4U (they/it) 14:57, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Suggestion

To avoid calls of "malformed RFC", or whatnot:

At the very top, just below the bot syntax, add a single neutral statement of what this is about, and add your signature.

I hope this helps. - jc37 00:31, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
