[edit]Hello, I'm Taking Out The Trash. I noticed that you recently removed content from Patrol Forces Southwest Asia without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. - It would help the Patrol Forces Southwest Asia article considerably if the correct format for footnotes were used. Please see Help:Footnotes for information. I have also noted that the method you are using for linking other articles is incorrect. I have corrected some of your links and you can see how I did it by examining the first few paragraphs and comparing my changes with your original copy. Cuprum17 (talk) 22:30, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
- In your recent edit you removed italics from ship names. According to Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Text formatting#Names and titles in the section named "Named, specific vessels: proper names given to:" Wikipedia uses italics for ship names. Please make any corrections that have been changed by you with regard to ship names. Cuprum17 (talk) 17:17, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- So, I am very new to this. I am trying to be consistent in naming standards in regards to USCG and not fully aware of the organizational schemes or formatting of Wikipedia. I am doing this as part of my time at the unit. Over my time working on this I will use the tools and will add more references as I figure it out. Myself and another user are trying to correct the major issues and the historical organization. We are both working on it to be the best of our abilities. If things are omitted it is due to being unaware or will be getting back to it as we learn more. Jpsantee (talk) 02:45, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
- I am not being critical of your efforts. I want for all Coast Guard articles on Wikipedia to be the very best they can be. If you will look at my user page you will see that I have a Coast Guard history myself and I am one of the few that regularly follow Coast Guard related pages on Wikipedia. If I make suggestions, it is probably because I want to see the Patrol Forces Southwest Asia article the best it can be and not as a criticism of your efforts. I am not working against you, but instead are making suggestions of how the article could be better presented using the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Not to brag about my accomplishments here but the very best Coast Guard related article on Wikipedia is Coast Guard Squadron One, which I wrote. I served in the Army in Vietnam and wasn't even aware of a Coast Guard presence in Vietnam until many years later. Believe me, I didn't write the Squadron One article on my own; I had other editors during the peer review process help me "get it right". The Patrol Forces Southwest Asia article could become a similar achievement with the right effort and could help tell the Coast Guard story on Wikipedia. If I make changes on the article, it will be because they are changes that I feel need to be done to bring the article up to Wikipedia standards. If I don't make those changes, I guarantee that some other editor will. Do not get discouraged; if you have questions, you only have to ask for help. I will give you some time to absorb some of the Wikipedia markup language before I make anymore changes or suggestions. Just make me one promise: Don't give up before the article tells the story of Patrol Forces Southwest Asia as accurately is it can be. Good luck and Semper Paratus! Your user page
[edit]A suggestion. Refer to yourself as a Coast Guardsman rather than a "USCG member". A Marine would never refer to themselves as a Marine Corps member. A Soldier would never refer to themselves as an Army member. A sailor would never refer to themselves as a Navy member.
The Coast Guard is more than just a social club and your service there is something to take pride in. Thank you for your service, Coast Guardsman! ... and a Merry Christmas! Cuprum17 (talk) 19:01, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the feedback, to be honest the changes in the CG have been interesting and the rebranding and restructuring since about 2013 are still on going. I have been in since 2008 and have a lot of CG history growing up (father and grand father). Since 2013 many of the changes have been good but some of them as some are always going to be 'why?' This extends to what we call ourselves and it may have been where I was stationed during the change on how much they wanted to emphasize it. I don't want to get too far into it but lets say neutral is name of the game, it does have some benefits, but costs as well. Hope your holidays were great! Thank you for the changes to the page! Wikipedia and copyright
[edit]Hello Jpsantee! Your additions to Patrol Forces Southwest Asia have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. —Compassionate727 (T·C) 03:33, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Good day, apologies I will fix my method, and use better due diligence on creating articles. It was not my intent break copyright and misunderstanding when using government articles. Thank you. Jpsantee (talk) 12:01, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
Robert S Hoyle moved to draftspace
[edit]Thanks for your contributions to Robert S Hoyle. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.
Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. CycloneYoris talk! 04:17, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
Conflict of Interest Editing
[edit]Good day! Please review Wikipedia's guidelines on conflicts of interest before editing further, especially on articles regarding the US Coast Guard and its units. Conflict of interest editing is strongly discouraged for a number of reasons. You are encouraged to clearly state your COI on your user page using the disclosure templates on the linked page above, and recommend edits through the talk page instead of directly editing articles on subjects with which you are connected. Please also take some time to review Wikipedia:Manual of Style, Wikipedia:Core content policies, Wikipedia:Notability, and Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. nf utvol (talk) 02:51, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your input. I was trying to be helpful it seems as if I walked into Wikipedia without enough information. I will suspend all my actions until I have the ability to properly contribute. Thank you again. -Jim Jpsantee (talk) 12:26, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
- No worries! I encourage you to keep editing and learning, we all started somewhere and even those of us who have been editing for many years still make mistakes! nf utvol (talk) 17:06, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
