Hello, Jpr127, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. PS: It looks like your addition of links to the Autry Museum website is useful. However be aware that making many edits like that in a row can be seen as spamming. Because the links are non-commercial and go to content which is useful but which could not be added to the articles directly, I would regard the links as worthwhile. (If it were ever possible to release the photos under a free use license that would be even better). I hope you'll find information that you can add directly to the articles as well.   Will Beback  talk  22:52, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

October 2011

[edit]

Hello Jpr127.

I want to apologize for the two messages I left you regarding your edits to Trigger (firearms) and Firearm. While I believe that the additions of the links to the Autry National Center for those two articles weren't relevant, I should not have reverted them with the anti-vandalism tool I use. They were not vandalism, and I shouldn't have treated them as if they were. I'm sorry for any confusion I might have caused, and I hope I haven't discouraged you from continuing to edit Wikipedia. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to leave a message on my talk page. Sorry again. --some jerk on the Internet (talk) 02:24, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Colts, firearms, and ANC

[edit]

The Colt article is interesting and worthwhile. However making it the first link from Wikipedia's Firearm article isn't appropriate because that WP article covers all kinds of firearms all over the world, while that Colt article covers just one, and in a limited time and place.

External links, like you've added, are best for giving readers access to resources which, for one reason or another, we can't use as sources for Wikipedia articles. If they can be used as sources, then it's better to simply add the information to the WP article and use the link as a citation. Since the ANC articles are signed and published (online) with a listed editor and by reputable organization, they would qualify as Wikipedia sources. If you have the time, it'd be great if your could use the ANC articles as sources for adding new information to Wikipedia articles.   Will Beback  talk  18:23, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation. You are correct it should not be first. But it is certainly relevant to firearms. And just to clarify, the title of the link is The Colt Revolver in the American West, but it is inaccurate to say it only covers "a limited time and place." Again, I feel that you have only browsed the link and not actually looked at the content. The link covers every type of revolver made from 1831 to the present. And it covers revolvers used around the world. In other words, the entire history of revolvers. The link has information and images that cannot be simply added to the Wikipedia article. I would like to add the link at the end of the external link section for the firearm article. Do you have a problem with this? Jpr127 (talk) 19:09, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have no objection, but I'm not one of the editors who removed the links. It might help if you add a very brief description of how the link relates to the topic of the article. For example, at Trigger (firearms), perhaps it'd be better to link directly to a page on single-action versus double-action, and then label the link appropriately, something like "description of triggers in Colt revolvers".   Will Beback  talk  20:25, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The link was removed again. I am confused and disappointed. More importantly, this is a serious loss for the Wikipedia community. I strongly encourage yourself and other "editors" to compare the link I added with the current links available. Again, a serious loss for the Wikipedia community. 02:15, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

You didn't take my advice to add an explanatory note tying it in with the topic of the article. Anyway, I'd let it go for now. Wikipedia is already fortunate enough to have 48 links to the Colt pages at ANC.[1] I think that's enough for interested readers to find their way to the ANC Colt pages.   Will Beback  talk  02:32, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Had I not seen Will's comments vouching for the legitimacy of the museum, I may have removed them all as they look spammed in. What is your relationship with the museum? I explained my removal in that no particular type of firearm needed to be profiled in the external links section...if we did that, we'd have scores of links there. Surely, you must understand that.

Stevens

[edit]

Thanks for the addition to the Stevens article. You may want to join the firearms project on here if you are not already a member.--Mike - Μολὼν λαβέ 17:51, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mike, I do not know about the firearms project. Can you give me some info? Thanks.
