Welcome to Wikipedia
[edit]Hi Jonathan, welcome to Wikipedia! I'm gonna point you to a few references to read, but I have tip that will make your introduction a little smoother? Try making small corrections to articles that don't get a lot of readers, first. Fix what you think are a few errors, rather than adding new material.
Wikipedia is really not a place to add uncited opinion, but the real issue with edits such as this one in Doughnut,[1] that another editor reverted, is that it's based, somewhere, somehow, on your personal experience. That it's not provable. That is, do you have a published hardcopy book with a survey that shows doughnuts are preferred hot? No. Of course, not. Right? But that's the point. There's no reference that other editors can look at, and check. (And as someone who does NOT like hot donuts, I have a certain question that "typically" people do.) You see?
Verifiability is a big, big thing with Wikipedia. See WP:V. It's one of three core values.
Also, some other resources (they're long, but you can get the idea) are:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- Tutorial
- How to edit a page
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
