== Óglaigh na hÉireann ==

Hi Johnathan. I agree that it would be nicer to have something shorter than Óglaigh na hÉireann (Continuity IRA splinter group) as the article title. Care must be taken though not to opt for a short name at the expense of clarity; Óglaigh na hÉireann (paramilitary) would have the same problem of not explaining to the reader the specific group in question. How about Óglaigh na hÉireann (2006-), or something along those lines? --Kwekubo 01:20, 1 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its a tough one, technically there are still at least five OnahE in existance.--Vintagekits 01:44, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point. My reasoning is that this group not only uses ONH as their only name for themselves (whereas the others all simply use ONH as another, more ceremonial name), but the Independent Monitoring Commission refers to them as ONH. I think that Kwekubo and I have agreed that Óglaigh na hÉireann (2006) would be a good name, but I'm waiting for him to give me a real response. What do you think, Vintagekits? Citations

[edit]

It's easy enough to do refs properly. There are appropriate templates on Wikipedia:Citation templates. See also WP:CITE. You use those in the text. Actually in the text, if you just put:

<ref>Description of the reference here</ref>

it will then show up automatically under references lower down.

At the bottom of the page, above external links section you put:

==Notes and references==
<references/>

Tyrenius 04:09, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Next tip

[edit]

The first time you have a ref in an article, you name it:

<ref name=fred>Description of the reference here</ref>

Any other time you use the ref subsequently, you put:

<ref name=fred/>

If you forget the /, then it blanks the rest of the article!

Good refs are the only way to create a credible article.

WikiProject IRA

[edit]

Hi all, I'm rather new to the Wiki (just joined up a few days ago), but the whole WikiProject concept seems like an effective tool for gathering a group of people together to work on a specific subject. I'm primarily interested in contributing to areas related to Irish nationalism, and the Irish Republican Army, and I've noticed a few of you have quite a lot of involvement in the same area. So, I wonder if anyone would be interested in forming a WikiProject focusing on Irish Nationalism? Wikipeda:WikiProject Irish Republican Army seems like a good title to me! WP:WPIRA would be a great shortcut! I'm posting this up on many different pages, so I would especially appreciate it if, if you're interested, you would join me at User talk:Johnathan Swift#WikiProject IRA. Erin Go Bragh 06:40, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea to me. I'll contribute if it is set up. Jdorney 10:54, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be interested in this myself. I find the IRAs and their splinters a very interesting bit of history, and it would give us a central place to regulate and discuss opposing vies on the articles. -- Pauric (talk-contributions) 14:04, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alright. I've done it. Wikipedia:WikiProject Irish Republican Army Erin Go Bragh 09:07, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! I'd love to collaborate with some of you on writing articles pertaining to Irish nationalism. However, to avoid some potential conflict down the road, might I humbly suggest changing the name of the WikiProject to WikiProject Irish Nationalism, WikiProject Irish Republicanism, or a similar derivitave? The IRA, while an important and necessary part of Irish nationalism, does not encapsulate the entire ideal, and might appear contentious, especially given the recent steps towards peace. A less contentious name might attract more users to participate, as well! Just a thought. Sláinte! gaillimhConas tá tú? 22:01, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gaillimh! My desire is to much more directly work on articles which are related closely to the IRA, and having the IRA(s) being the central focus of the WikiProject. The lines I added to the page about including broader topics such as Irish Nationalism and Irish Republicanism were much more of an afterthought. I'd love to see people working on other aspects of Irish Nationalism, but I'd really like to use this WikiProject to focus on the IRA. If the project does widen a bit, I don't quite see why the name would have to change. I wouldn't say no outright, but I really feel like WP:IRA is an excellent title! It's short, catchy, easy to remember, and it's got such a nice shortcut! Erin Go Bragh 02:12, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah ok, thanks for clarifying a bit! I don't plan on joining the project as an active participant, but I'm sure our paths will cross on the 'pedia, as we share some similar interests. Good luck and have fun with your project! Sláinte gaillimhConas tá tú? 04:02, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm always a fan of impromptu collaboration, and unorganized, organic connection when it happens. Sláinte a fhein (I'm afraid what Gaelic I have is Scots, and that which is there is sorely lacking; I know it's not a coherent sentence, but I hope my message gets across). : ) Erin Go Braghtalk 08:33, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images in signatures

[edit]

Hello. Welcome to Wikipedia. You just got here a few days ago, and you're doing great so far. I noticed, however, that you use an image in your signature. The guideline WP:SIG#Images says that images should not be used in signatures and gives a few reasons why. Please change your signature to meet that guideline. Also, while not an absolute requirement, it is common practice for a signature to resemble to some degree the username it represents. Your username is "Johnathan Swift", but your signature reads something completely different, "Erin Go Bragh". If you would rather be known by that name, you might consider visiting Wikipedia:Changing username. Thanks in advance, and again, welcome! Wodup 10:13, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, Wodup! I've seen other users using images, and it just seemed like a good idea! I can get rid of it, though. As for the name: I decided I'd much prefer to be known as Erin Go Bragh, but I had already created this name, and I figured I should avoid making a second account! I'll check out that username change business; thanks again! Erin Go Bragh 18:28, 4 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IRA-stub

[edit]

Hi - it has come to our notice that you have recently created a new stub type. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories and in many other places on Wikipedia, new stub types should be proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies, and whether better use could be made of a WikiProject-specific talk page template.

In the case of IRA-stub, it's not that likely that there are the required number of stubs for such a stub category. It's also not standard stubbing practice to create stub types for one side of a current or recent civil conflict. None of the current stub types that could take these stubs (such as NI-stub and NI-bio-stub) have sufficient stubs that splitting them makes any real sense from a stub-sorting point of view. Your WikiProject would almost certainly be far better served by a WikiProject-specific talk page template. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any reason why this stub type should not be proposed for deletion at WP:SFD. And please, in future, propose new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 05:55, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New template

[edit]

I've made a new template, following my post above and thought you might like to be the first recipient. To post it to another user, just put:

{{subst:Refstart}}

Tyrenius 10:12, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's really neat, Tyrenius! It explains it all, and is pretty concise, considering what it has to cover. Erin Go Braghtalk 23:49, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did You Know nomination

I've been trying. Thanks for the contant reminders; they help. I'll go look for where I messed up this time. Erin Go Braghtalk 23:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sean Cronin

[edit]

This might seem like a slightly odd request/question, but do you know anything about Sean Cronin? I'm trying to get together enough information on him to formulate a tolerable Wiki Article [as he was chief of staff of the IRA twice] but am finding it somewhat challenging, thanks.169.231.11.66 09:32, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of fair use images

[edit]

Please see User:Durin/Removal of fair use images regarding fair use images and where they can be used in Wikipedia. You should stop using Image:Erin Go Bragh flag.jpg in your signature. Astrotrain 22:40, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you'll scroll up my talk page, you'll see that someone else already mentioned this to me. I have since stopped using any images in my signature. It seems that old signature do not change, however. Thank you for pointing it out to me, again, though. Erin Go Braghtalk 23:33, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An editor has nominated Óglaigh na hÉireann (CIRA splinter group), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Óglaigh na hÉireann (CIRA splinter group) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. Advice

[edit]

I have an overview of Republican activity in spanish civil war and 6 counties during 1930s & 40s, where should it appear? Details from Northern Campaign are expanded on in it (that article didnt just detail the campaign when I originally wrote it.) Fluffy999 18:04, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up on "State Terrorism by U.S."

[edit]

Hey, just wanted to let you know that a brief vote on the "State Terrorism by the United States" page would be welcome. Just a "Keep" is all that's needed -- the nationalists on the page are taking an up-or-down vote on whether to rename it.

Question

[edit]

What does "Erin Go Bragh" mean in English language? Astrotrain 14:01, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Roughly, Erin Go Bragh, or Ering Go Brach, or any variation therof, being of Gaelic (either Irish or Scots, no one's quite certain) origin and thus being of uncertain spelling, translates to Ireland (Erin) Forever (Go Bragh). One might also say Alba Go Bragh. Erin Go Braghtalk 07:44, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Template:IR topics

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:IR topics requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Review

[edit]

Hi.I've recently created an article regarding the Free State Army Intelligence Department that operated from Oriel House and summerly executed Republicans in Dublin during the Civil War. Please can you take some time to review this article. Also, if you have any tip on how to make this page better then I'd be interested in what you have to say. Herers the link.

Hi, at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge we're striving to bring about 10,000 article improvements and creations for the UK and Ireland and inspire others to create more content. In order to achieve this we need diversity of content, in all parts of the UK and Ireland on all topics. Eventually a regional contest will be held for all parts of the British Isles, like they were for Wales and the Wedt Country. We currently have just over 1900 articles and need contributors! If you think you'd be interested in collaborating on this and helping reach the target quicker, please sign up and begin listing your entries there as soon as possible!
