1st Preliminary meeting of Wikimedia Hong Kong

[edit]

Regarding your change made to the CUHK wiki page, would you mind to cite evidence and explain why is the Engineering school "different" from other traditional engineering program? It is my understanding that each engineering program of each university in the world has its own unique elements in each of their programs; how is CUHK's difference makes its program a standout? Also, there are a couple grammtical and spelling mistakes in your writing. For now, I've decided to pull the engineering section out of the CUHK page, please don't be offended, I would love to discuss with you on the matter further. -justicelilo

"As one of the largest University in Hong Kong, the CUHK also have an engineering school. But different from traditional enginerring schools, CUHK only have 5 departments related to computer/information science, which undergrauates numbers over 500."

[edit]

"hello, i am the one who added engineering schools in CUHK page, hope you notify that. at first, i am trying to enrich the content of CUHK, by adding introductions of each schools. about the Question why engineering school in CUHK in different from other University, is because the school in skewed completely to computer area. in my point of view, traditional engineering schools have mech. eng., civil, elec. but CUHK do not. Joetsuihk 03:32, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

more, after i checked your changes in CUHK page, i dont think Medical school is a good name for the heading. CUHK use the name Faculty of Medicine, in its own website. And the link Medical school in the paragraph link to a page titled Faculty of Medicine. so the Dean of medicine also use the name Faculty of Medicine, isnt it? And "The CUHK hosts one of only two medical schools in Hong Kong," do you think "chinese medicine" is also medicine? i am not going to edit the page until finally get some conclusion. Joetsuihk 04:07, 18 September 2006 (UTC)"

There is a degree and limit to what a reasonable person would add to "enrich" a wiki topic. If we add whatever information we think should be added, then a wiki page would be so long that no one will bother to read; if you add mech. school, others will come and add the Chinese dept., the English dept., etc. That would be absurd. Furthermore, why the law school and medical school? Well, first, an university's social standing is typically depended on three professions:law, business, and medincine; thus these 3 programs usually recieve a large sum of resource respectively-- this supposition I think most people will agree. But more importantly, CUHK law school is new, and it is the new focus of the school, and many others in the law profession, including those from different countries in Asia. That is why it has to be mentioned.

Also, your point about "faculty of medicine" is kind of strange. Perhaps English is not your first language? I think you've misunderstood something. Different context allows different wordings to describe the same thing--this is common in communication. A faculty is used typically to describe a group of teachers. On the website they want to emphasize the people in the medical program--that is their choice. However, when something looks like a duck, talks like a duck, you can call it a duck. A medical school is a medical school, no matter what it is. UCLA medical school is a medical school, HKU medical school is a medical school, CUHK medical school is a medical school. Furthermore, the Dean of medicine also use the name Faculty of Medicine because he is the head of a group of medical professors; thus, of course, its usage is correct.

Also, Medicine is not Chinese medicine. By medicine, most people on earth refers to the western medical practice, NOT Chinese medicine. Is Chinese medicine a legitimate medicine? Sure it is, but it isn't what the doctors at CUHK medical school practice, I really don't see why you are "confused". I am sure you can tell there is a difference between American football and rugby, right?

My last suggestion: if you really want to contribute, then I suggest you do not waste any more effort on trivial things. Also, "copy and paste" English really isn't helpful either. You will have to learn to digest the information and tell other people of what you know in a nutshell. ---Justicelilo

I am suprised that you use the reason that "medical school is the same meaning as Faculty of Medicine, so use medical school." Yes, there is numbers of words and phases giving the same meaning. But "Faculty of medicine" is the name that CUHK use!

Never in my statement have I once mentioned or hinted that medical school and faculty of medicine both mean the same thing. I said, "context changes word-choice." Donald T. is the Chief-excecutive of HK, but is he not also "the leader" of HK people? Do you see now that word choice really depends on the context in which the words are used. Faculty, let me repeat, usually mean "a group of teachers"--the teaching staff. You can call the medical program of a school, Faculty of medicine--this usually focus the spotlight on the profesors; on the other hand, by using medical school, I include EVERYTHING of the medical program at CUHK: its people, buildings, facilities, etc. Also, medical school is the common term people use, because it JUST IS commonly used this way; this is something you would know if English is your first language, which by the way, is a fact, and I am not using it to attack you. Feel free to google "medical school" and you will find what? Medical schools.

I don't know why you think medicine, law and business is "special". i agree that law should have a place in the main page of CUHK, just because it is new. You may open a new page "Faculty of Medicine in CUHK" if you think Faculty of Medicine need one.

Again, read what I've said, the highlighted programs of a school deserve recognition; this is not to be-little other programs, but to make the whole university stand out. And no, I have no intention to create a medical school page for CUHK.

Do you think this is "trivial"? Sorry, "trivial" to you but not me.

I am almost done responding to your message right?

"copy and paste" English really isn't helpful either. You will have to learn to digest the information and tell other people of what you know in a nutshell. Where do I copy? I will tell you i am not. Please state where do I copy.

You copied the phrase, "faculties of medicine" and "pasted" it and believed that you couldn't be wrong--this, in essence, was copy and paste.

Last, yes, english is not my first language, so? someone only can contribute to their first language's wiki? Please stop personal attack

I have no intention to "attack" you, in fact, I am replying because you've messaged me, and it would be common courtesy to reply. If you do not like to recieve my message, then simply stop messaging me. Feel free to contribute to wiki, but you will find that additions with poor quality will only do two things: make wiki readers laugh and think less of CUHK or whatever other topics those poor additions belong, or the poor additions will be deleted by other wiki editors. That's all. And one more thing, people work hard to create and organize some wiki pages, and one should consider carefully before editing other people's work, this is also common ccourtesy, and I think, also called respect. [edit]

I delete messages after I've read them like e-mail, it's pretty common on wiki. Also, I am done talking to you, because you clearly don't know what I am talking about. Do what you want, my friend, good luck in everything, and in life, of course. Justicelilo 14:11, 20 September 2006 (UTC)justicelilo[reply]
