Information icon Hello, Jessica.holden. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. 2601:188:1:AEA0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 15:02, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am hoping you can provide some context behind your additions of links to multiple articles that link to UMASS Boston. My concerns are that single-purpose accounts tend to go hand in hand with editing with a conflict of interest, something we try to avoid on Wikipedia. If you can provide a little information on your mission that may alleviate some of the concerns editors have with this pattern. Thanks, Garchy (talk) 18:49, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Garchy, Thank you for your message. I am an archivist at UMass Boston, and I have been adding external links to articles that relate to our collecting areas - for example, on the Columbia Point (Boston) article, I added several links to our collections that document the people and history of Columbia Point. We are hoping to provide the public with broader access to primary sources that document the subjects of various Wikipedia articles, such as the Vietnam War, Dorchester (Boston), the Boston Harbor Islands, etc. Would there be a better way to do this than adding external links? Would creating a "primary sources" or "records" section in a Wikipedia article be more helpful? Thank you! Jessica.holden (talk) 19:00, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your positive contributions to the encyclopedia - but even more importantly, thank you for being a team player and showing an eagerness to learn the rules and make changes based on new information - not every editor is willing to change what they are doing when coached by others but you have shown a desire and willingness to ensure your edits are accepted by the community. Keep up the awesome work! Garchy (talk) 21:00, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Garchy: Thank you so much to you and the other moderators for your guidance! I am new to editing on Wikipedia and I really appreciate your help and your patience. And thank you for the cookie! :) Jessica.holden (talk) 21:05, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I second Garchy's sentiments. Enjoy the cookie and best wishes, 2601:188:1:AEA0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 03:37, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
