Revert of your edit of Iran
[edit]Hello. I reverted your edit of Iran, as it appeared to be inappropriate WP:EDITORIALIZING. Your edit summary of "minor correction" does not seem like an adequate description of your edit. I suggest to discuss the issue at Talk:Iran if you think that should be added to the article. Are there reliable sources that you can reference that say that referring to Iran as Persia is only done "erroneously" and that only "westerners" do that? Personally, I think you are wrong about that. —BarrelProof (talk) 20:02, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Hello, I added it again before I read your message, now am trying to undo it but failing . Could you undo it for me again please? Elizabeth x My information came from talking to an Iranian - from the province within Iran known as Persia. He also said Iranians have always called it Iran. Could I add "in the west" or "by westerners"? I then found a page explaining online what my Iranian friend explained to me - at http://www.heritageinstitute.com/zoroastrianism/iranpersia/index.htm. Could I add that as a reference? Elizabeth x
- Thank you for responding. I have seen your additional edits. At this point I would be OK with waiting to see how others react, but since you suggest undoing it, I might do that. If you want to undo an edit yourself, you can find an "undo" link next to each entry in the article history. As long as edits are undone in reverse chronological order, they should succeed. You can also undo multiple edits at the same time by first using the history page to compare the "before" and "after" versions of what you want to undo, and then looking for an undo link on upper right area of the comparison page. Personally, I think that the notion that referring to Iran as Persia is incorrect is a matter of opinion. While some people may think it is incorrect, others do not, so I think Wikipedia should not label that as an incorrect term. I have known some Iranians who sometimes refer to their own country as Persia, and the government of Iran referred to itself as Persia until the late 1930s. —BarrelProof (talk) 21:03, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, BarrelProof. I thought my informant knew when he said Iranians have always called it Iran, but perhaps like all of us he only knew what he'd been told. I looked at History tab, then clicked on the Undo button / link but it gave me a page witrh side-by-side and I could not find any Confirm type of button so I don't think it worked. I'll wait a little and look here before trying it again. Jer16 (talk) 22:13, 25 September 2013 GMT
- After it shows you a side-by-side comparison (with the desired version on the right-hand side of the comparison), you need to scroll down the page (below the "editing window"), and click on "Save page" to confirm. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:34, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks again. I did look at Talk:Iran first, but it said the page was This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject.. So I didn't use it. But I see on looking again that there's a discussion persia_is_not_iran which is talking about the subject and not about making edits. :-S Presumably I should contribute to this (in the morning or after my weekend away), give it my citation and invite a reference for the argument against. - Yes, I see that discussion now. That's interesting – maybe I will participate in that discussion too. I hadn't noticed it before, and there are some things I might want to say there (after a little bit of background research, which I may not have time for very soon). But let me explain the remark on the Talk page saying "This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject". That does not mean that a discussion like this one shouldn't take place there. It just means that the discussions should be about the content of the article – i.e., about what the article should say, rather than just being random discussions that are somewhat related to the topic of the article. The article's Talk page is the perfect place to have this discussion. Please let me give a couple of examples:
- If you want to chat with people about how good-looking you think Justin Bieber is and what fun it is to dance to his songs and how you wish you could go for a walk on the beach with him, that's not appropriate to discuss at Talk:Justin Beiber, because it's not about the content of the article. That's a "forum style" discussion or mere gossip, which is discouraged.
- But if you notice that the New York Times has published an article about how there are a lot of people who think Justin Bieber is very good looking and the article says that many people are having fun dancing to his songs, and the article says that there are many people who wish they could go for walks on the beach with him, it's perfectly OK to have a discussion at Talk:Justin Beiber about whether the Justin Bieber Wikipedia article should discuss what the Times article says.

How I should sign myself (almost)
[edit]On my third attempt the first bit, User:, is a link but the second bit, User talk:, isn't. Hmm ... Aha! Perhaps because I need to set up a User talk page for it to go to first ! Then I saw my usertalk page has an underline so I've added an underline for my fourth attempt (fails) Jer16 (talk) 22:19, 25 September 2013 (GMT)
- I think I know what you're struggling with, and it's something you shouldn't worry too much about. Let's see if I can explain it. When you add a link on a Wikipedia page, if the link is to the same page (so that clicking it would just put you right back on the same page you're already on), Wikipedia won't insert the link. Instead, it will render it in boldface. So whether the link is created or not depends on what page it's on. So when we're writing something here, User:Jer16 would be a link, but User talk:Jer16 will not. But if you put the same string of text on the User:Jer16 page, the result will be switched. Does that make sense? —BarrelProof (talk) 21:32, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Brilliant, thank you for that clear explanation, and volunteering when I didn't ask :-). Jer16 (talk) 00:25, 26 September 2013 (GMT) testing the four tildes I've just read about Janet Elizabeth (talk) 00:41, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
