"Number" in opera
[edit]Hi Jenny: While I live in the US, I'm British and don't particularly like the use of the US-centric "number" when it comes to opera, although there's a perfectly logical reason for doing so in certain cases and with certain types of operas as we see from the Wiki article linked.
I specialise in writing about bel canto era operas, but always use "Aria" or, more specifically where there is a clear two-part (cavatina + cabaletta) or three-part format (cavatina + temp di mezzo + cabaletta).
One of the group's long-term aims is to integrate any section which simply lists "numbers" or "principal numbers" (or some such name) into the synopsis, thus indicating where they occur in the dramatic context. Thanks for that update. It's so nice to see people editing in constructive, long-term way rather than hodge podge. Just before I saw your message, I noticed a plot synopsis for a famous story which, due to its brevity and lack of insight, would lead the average reader into assuming the story means A when it in fact means B, if one is to read it fully.
It's such a challenge to explain 'worlds' to people who haven't experienced them, without changing the 'world' with our words. How do you write passionately without losing balance? It's the same tension that we love between score and libretto, I guess.
