Cape Town Youth – from Victim to Victor
In 2014 Salesian Life Choices realized that South Africans perceived youth in a negative light. Stereotypes included that young people are lazy, that they had no vision, that they’re involved with all the wrong things and troublemakers. South Africans were talking about youth or talking to youth but there was little opportunity for young people to have a voice and talk about their lives, their struggles and how they overcome them. It is due to this that the CAPE TOWN YOUTH BOOK was born.
The book is a compilation of three years is a creative celebration of remarkable young people, inspired by Salesian Life Choices’ 30 Stories in 30 Days Youth Month Campaign. The book is a compilation of the first three years’ most inspirational stories, with portraits by local photographer Peter Harper and illustrations by 21 South African artists. Each artist was given a story and requested to interpret it before meeting the story’s her or heroine. In this book, you will meet young people who have overcome abuse, loss, violence and neglect but have stayed on course to fulfill their potential. Many of them are making a difference in their communities and helping others to also achieve success. These stories showcase the reason Why Salesian Life Choices believes in the potential of youth and works with them every day.
