List of acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom
I'd appreciate your input regarding whether the above list should be at List of acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom or List of Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom. See Talk:List of acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom#Move. Hiding T 12:00, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, good to see you've signed up, but there is a bit of a discussion that started after you left about the date, as the 12th falls on Easter Sunday. The question is, whether the London wikimeetup is a Moveable feast. Perhaps you can check the discussion on the talk page! ThanksHarrypotter (talk) 22:00, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey James. Discussions have opened up for the fifth Manchester meet to take advantage of various people who were not available last time now being free. If you'd like to stick your oar in, as it were? Ironholds (talk) 15:23, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Westminster School logo
elements cross-posted
The Westminster School logo, is currently tagged as a fair use image. However, in the under school magazine from last year, it shows that the school was using a form of the logo from 1943 at the latest, with an image similar ,but not the same as this image [1]. The only main difference from the older logo to the current one are the reeds at the side, but the school also uses a logo without one and variants which are similar to the logo used by the abbey (just the coat of arms in this image) concurrently with the logo on the Westminster School artlicle. The question I wanted to ask is the current logo too unoriginal to be a copyrightable original work after 2013(at the latest) or not? If not, would the usage of one of the older, public domain logos be appropriate on the page? Sorry for bothering you. Tmwerty (talk) 16:03, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, good question. If the image was as we currently have it depicted in 1943, then it would, yes, be PD in 2013 at the latest - but only if it was a work for hire; if it was created and copyright not assigned to the School, but merely licensed, it could be later. I have no idea how we might find out further information, beyond asking the School (and it's a particularly detailed and specific query, of course).
- Certainly, there are a large number of ways of rendering the School's coat of arms. Having said that, there is a difference (beyond the shield shape and decoration) between the 'official' and playing-card versions - the Tudor Roses are on fields of Or in one and Argent in the other. I have no idea which is correct, however. :-) Does our duty to show accuracy trump our need here to be maximally redistributable? Absent further information, it comes down to a judgement to see what added value we give by using a Fair Use image over a PD one. To assume that the School is correct doesn't seem too foolish, but I'm not sure I have a decision.
- Sorry that this response gives rise to more questions than it answers. :-)
- James F. (talk) 17:18, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for answering, I'll try to confirm whether it is licensed or not, (curiously, I have noticed that the school only seems to use a low resolution image for any electronic use ). And as the school's coat of arms is based in the standard of Westminster Abbey, the tudor rose should be in fields of Or, not Argent, shown here and used by the schoolhere (the flag on the boat). Due to this, I think using the playing-card version is not appropriate and for now the fair use image should be kept. However, the 1943 variant is a possibility that can be explored when the time comes in 2013(possibly earlier if the image can be dated - personally I have a hunch that is already in the public domain (as the school would not take the expense of designing a new logo in the cash-strapped times that was WWII - I will check)). Sorry for the slightly rambling answer, thanks again and have a nice easter.Tmwerty (talk) 17:11, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey James, just dropping you a note to let you know that we're debating whether or not to move the date to the following weekend (shock horror, progress) as it would allow me and User:Werdna (sorry, User:Werdna and I) to attend. Request for help
I thought it might be a good idea to run a contest or two through the Countries WikiProject to attract editors to improve country coverage on Wikipedia, especially the country outlines.
I noticed you are a member of the WikiProject, and was wondering if you could help.
I've posted a message at Countries WikiProject talk page to get discussion started on what the awards programs should be and how they should be run.
Your ideas and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Indefblockeduser templates
Is it possible for non administrators to tag {{indefblockeduser}} on user and user talk pages of indefinitely blocked users?
- Possible, but generally better to leave it to sysops as they're able to "do something about it", if you follow me. Really, sysops should be doing it themselves when they block users as part of their job.

A review to see if Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom meets Wikipedia:Good article criteria has started, and has been put on hold. Suggestions for improvement are at Talk:Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom/GA2, and are mainly to do with coverage and neutrality, and building the lead section. Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is one of our most high profile and popular articles, attracting an average of over 11,000 readers every day. Orphaned non-free image File:Two Euro coins.png
Thanks for uploading File:Two Euro coins.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. - The page did have more details - specifically, it had EXIF info (in a non-structured form), as back in 2003/4 we didn't automatically pull this out. However, now EXIF data is shown in an automatic template underneath the file on Commons, so there's no need for it. :-)

- Jeff, those users have been known to cause problems on Wikiedia and both are banned; in that discussion Novelreader pointed out "no proof is offered". More to the point, there is no active issue with these editors, whose accounts have been dormant for years. The contributions you removed stood over all that time with hundreds of edits since. Your reason for removing many of them was that years ago you suspect there was a COI, which by itself is not even prohibited as the guideline makes clear. In addition to the policy violations, it was just a needless exercise. --David Shankbone 02:01, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

British Library follow-up
Thank you for participating in the English and Drama Editathon at the British Library on June 4. I hope you enjoyed the day and got something useful out of it.
If you are new to Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, I hope you had any questions or problems answered and maybe found being a contributor as addictive as many of the regulars do. If you've got any questions or need help, please feel free to ask any of us on our talk page or by e-mail (Fæ, Tom Morris, Sadads, James F., RHaworth, The Land, AdamBMorgan), ask on the British Library collaboration page or through the Wikipedia Help Desk.
If you are interested in working on Wikipedia, you might want to consider joining one of the WikiProjects. These are places where team work between editors interested in a particular topic can be coordinated. Some suggestions for WikiProjects that may be of interest to you as a participant in the event on Saturday include Literature, Poetry or Science Fiction. A full list of literature and language related WikiProjects can be found here, and a list of all WikiProjects is here. The WikiProjects often have things that need doing, and if you need help you can often ask in their talk page.
But there are other places you can get involved. If you are interested on working on images, such as improving image descriptions, categorisation or uploading new media, consider getting involved in Wikimedia Commons. Wikisource also needs people willing to help make available original source material, and Wikiquote is trying to compile a directory of quotes which you may be able to contribute to.
If you want to continue some of the work we got started on Saturday, here are a few potential things to help with:
- Following on from work on Ella D'Arcy on Saturday, work has started to make all of The Yellow Book available on Wikisource. If you go to the page on Wikisource and pick a volume then click on 'scan index' you can start helping to proofread pages from the journal - simply click on the page you want to work on, and go through to check that the text on the left reflects the text on the right. If you need any help with getting started, please ask User:Tom Morris.
- If you created any new articles at the event, you might want to submit them to Did you know?.
- If you are able to translate into other languages, why not pick one of the articles we worked on, translate it and post it on another language version of Wikipedia: there are now versions in hundreds of languages. On Wikimedia Commons, it is also possible to provide multilingual descriptions of images and categories: this enables editors on the other language versions to better find images and media files they can use in their project.
- If you need images from the British Library to illustrate articles, please add them to the image requests page. If you would like a British LIbrary curator to help collaborate on an article, please add it to the collaborations page.
- You might also be interested in attending GLAMcamp London.

Woods Coffee brouhaha
Hello James F.,
You protected Woods Coffee from comment recently. Thank you.
As can be seen at user talk:dubyus and talk:Woods_Coffee, the anonymous editor persists. The first comment on my talk page demonstrates that this anonymous user has something other than facts in mind.
I request that the comment on talk:Woods_Coffee regarding a boycott and referring to an external website be removed. It doesn't seem right that this website information should be allowed, even if it's just in talk.
I am a satisfied customer of Woods Coffee with no other affiliation. The complaints that the anonymous Wikipedia user has about one of the owners have little or nothing to do with the everyday operation of Woods Coffee, especially the few locations that I visit. I have never met the individual associated with Woods. I do enjoy the heck out of their products and the people who work there.
Thank You. Dubyus (talk) 07:40, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Your opinion would be appreciated
As a member of WikiProject Countries, I'm seeking your opinion on a possible issue identified at List of sovereign states. If you have some spare moments, please contribute a comment at the Discussion of criteria. Best regards, Nightw 05:55, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Manchester wikimeets
Hi James, shame you couldn't make it to the last Manchester wikimeet. The next one's going to be on 17 September if you're interested in coming - more info at meta:Wikimeets/Manchester. Otherwise, hope to see you at a London wikimeet sometime soon. :-) Mike Peel (talk)
- Tempting!

GeoNotices
Don't forget to put commas between the GeoNotices, otherwise everyone gets Javascript error messages (and no notices). Cheers. Kaldari (talk) 20:17, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
- Argh. Thanks, Ryan!
- James F. (talk) 20:18, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
I've been trying to keep this page neat for *years* any help that templates can give would be *very* appreciated.Naraht (talk) 19:55, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- No problem. :-)
- James F. (talk) 19:57, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- What tools are you using to transform each line to a template, perl? And if it takes recreating all of the links to schools and fraternity pages to get this to work, let me know how I can help! (for that matter let me know anyway!)Naraht (talk) 20:08, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- I'm just used Excel for the extraction and regular expressions for the re-formatting, in the end.
- James F. (talk) 21:57, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm. Can you give me more information on how to do that, I've worked in VBA, but I generally use perl. The problem with bringing it to UNIX is that I lose all of the long dashes.Naraht (talk) 11:23, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
- Error in changeover. The Alpha Sigma Phi group had an extra field at the beginning so everything got shifted down 1 in the list of arguments, so you ended up with (among others) Type = [[Central Mindanao University]] The one that fell off the end is R(AA) which is that an Alumni Association is Registered.Naraht (talk) 20:42, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- Argh, will fix now.
- James F. (talk) 21:57, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
- (Still not fixed, I'll take care of it) Are the Law and medical sections also doable with your technique?Naraht (talk) 11:23, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
A cookie for you!
Thanks for working on the Philippine Fraternity and Sorority page. I'll see how much I can clean it up tomorrow.. Naraht (talk) 21:45, 13 July 2011 (UTC) |
- Thanks. :-)
- James F. (talk) 21:57, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
Can you transform the other sections like the Law and Medicine Fraternities to the new template? You seem to have software that at least help automate it.Naraht (talk) 13:04, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
DYK for Tipu's Tiger
On 28 July 2011, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Tipu's Tiger, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the 18th-century Indian automaton Tipu's Tiger (pictured) shows a near life-size European being mauled by a tiger, and emits wails and grunts as well as containing a pipe organ? You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |
Another contribution to the DYK project, thanks Victuallers (talk) 22:42, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
Block of User:Mni9791
I just noticed that a few days ago you indef-blocked User:Mni9791 for "Concerns best raised off-wiki." Now I have heard the theory that trolls should be blocked as quietly as possible to deny recognition - but Mni9791 seemed a good-faith editor to me. Outside of the realm of conspiracy theories I cannot think of why someone with Mni's track record and contributions would be blocked, especially without prior warning and without giving the reason. (I have doubts in principle about blocks for reasons so secret that they cannot be named on-wiki.) Could you please explain that block? If you consider the reason so un-discussable that you do not want to reply on-wiki, please send me a mail me via the "e-mail user" feature. Yours, Huon (talk) 23:51, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
Wikimania!
Great meeting you Wikimania! | |
Wish we had a photo of us together, perhaps soon enough. It was great meeting you at Wikimania and thank you for being an awesome support system as a Wiki-friend and colleague. I look forward to getting together soon! In #wikilove, SarahStierch (talk) 11:19, 13 August 2011 (UTC) |

Some falafel for you!
Well, here's some WikiLove to you (you can't say now that I only WikiLoved myself :D).
And say hello to that friend of yours (that we talked about) :D Filip (§) 10:32, 22 August 2011 (UTC) |
- Indeed. And yes. :-)

Wikimeet in Manchester on Saturday
Hi James, this is just a quick reminder about the Manchester wikimeet this Saturday (17th September). Hope you can make it. Mike Peel (talk) 23:03, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
- Wish I could have been there, but was at a WLM event in The Netherlands.

sockpuppet editing
There is an open WP:SPI case looking at sockpuppet editing primarily on the Johann Hari/ Talk page. As you edited the Johann Hari/Talk page between 2004 and 2011, your input is welcomed.

- Thank you, though it all looks to be sorted now.

Greetings
Hi, hope all is well with you and yours. I've finally been shamed into creating User:WereSpielChequers/Recall (Pedro named me in his, so I realised I really ought to have one myself). Would you be willing to be on the list? If so just edit it and move your name out of the hidden bit. ϢereSpielChequers 20:44, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for asking. However, I have concerns about the concept of recall short-cutting the community's ability to moderate the work of sysops - it's not that I think I'm a bad choice, but that letting me have a say and not others troubles me.
- James F. (talk) 19:02, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, well I'm not too keen on recall myself, but this seemed a harmless addition. See you in a fortnight. ϢereSpielChequers 20:32, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Ohio politicians
are you planning on reinstating all of the deleted Ohio politicians. Obviously, all are credible. At least they deserve a stub. Please do so for all of the individuals who are red linked on the Ohio house and senate pages.
— Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.252.199.28 (talk • contribs) 19:22, 7 October 2011
- I was merely undoing a procedural anomally, not specifically going into bat for Ohio politicians (or any other particular kind of content). If they used to exist but were deleted for appropriate reasons, you can use the article creation wizard to request them.
- James F. (talk) 19:46, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
- I think that may be another sockpuppet. That was very quick of him to realize those articles were missing. Marcus Qwertyus 23:57, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- Technically, as a mere IP it's not a "sockpuppet account", but yes, it does seem plausible.
