[edit]Ecotourism Australia (EA) is a not-for-profit industry based association for ecotourism, environmentally sustainable and culturally responsible tourism. [1] The organisation is a peak national body dedicated to inspiring the ecotourism industry with certification programs, consumer education and marketing, industry development, advocacy and lobbying, and the Global Eco Conference.
Since its foundation in 1991, EA has gained a diverse member base representative of key industry sectors - ecotourism accommodation; tour and attraction operators; tourism planners; protected area managers and other government agencies; academics and students; tourism, environmental, interpretation and training consultants; local and regional tourism associations; and travelers. [2] With this global network, the organisation aims to promote ecologically sustainable tourism with a primary focus on experiencing natural areas that fosters environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation.
EA’s flagship activity is to plan and develop certification programs as follows: [3]
- Ecotourism Certification: A globally recognised brand for environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable nature based tourism products
- Respecting Our Culture (ROC) Certification: A tourism industry development tool for protecting cultural authenticity and integrity
- Climate Action Certification: A program for the whole tourism industry which recognises efforts of businesses proactively responding to climate change
- EcoGuide Certification: An industry driven certification program for nature and ecotourism guides
These world class certifications help to identify genuine ecotourism and nature tourism operators in Australia. EA also offers EcoLodges of Australia membership - a marketing consortium of Advanced Ecotourism certified accommodation providers in Australia.
