Happy New Year!
[edit]Let's make one resolution for 2007. Could you please give some comments for our project, here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Indonesia#Re-activating_the_project?Thanks. — Indon (reply) — 13:04, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your suggestions. I've been playing around with the main project shape. Please take a look here: User:Indon/sandbox2 and tell me what do you think. I've put shortcuts for easy votes, nominatings or reviewing the project's article. — Indon (reply) — 18:40, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
Jav lang
[edit]So what you are saying is, I should check the Javanese language article in 30mins? ;). I was in bed an hour ago but couldn't sleep. I'm now doing my twice yearly purge of Bahasa Indonesia => Indonesian. I can't believe it's back in so many articles! I need a bot. And now I am a stickler for references. [edit]- Just noticed your edit to caronade island - I hope it wasnt me - _if_ there is already a subsidiary WA cat - we leave the main off - yes? Is there ever a point where the double barrell woulkd be required? SatuSuro 15:35, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
- No, it wasn't you; it was HouseOfScandal. Generally if an article is in a category we don't also put it in a parent category of that category. As with all "rules" on Wikipedia this rule can be [[WP:IAR|ignored]. e.g. see this ancient conversation: [1] and [2]. Hesperian 23:05, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

- Hehe. Grutness deleted several stubs of mine before. Its debatable whether or not those stub types were needed, but some guard the creation of stubs like their own children. How silly of you for not asking the stub guardian prior ;) -- Longhair\talk 02:41, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Do you make use of IRC or similar to get the messages across regarding WikiProject work? I note AU has an IRC channel but it's almost always empty. -- Longhair\talk 02:45, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Email works for me. I just get far too much of it ;) -- Longhair\talk 02:49, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- I feel the same. In times gone past, it wasn't uncommon for myself to get in excess of 3,000 emails per week. While I've trimmed back my business interests of late, they still flow fast. -- Longhair\talk 02:52, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Feel free to trawl my contributions and tag my unreferenced articles accordingly. We're all guilty of it ;) -- Longhair\talk 03:21, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
Hubertus Johannes van Mook
[edit]Intimidating? Yes and no. I myself created {{Sunraysia}} only several days ago, complete with an army of redlinks within the template. I guess if the article on Hubertus Johannes van Mook was expanded somewhat, the box at the footer would become less overbearing. I can see the need it's trying to fulfill, but I think the problem is with the length of the article rather than the addition of the box as such. -- Longhair\talk 09:22, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- The box also has a hide function, so one can choose to rid themselves of it if they wish. -- Longhair\talk 09:23, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Charles Whitham - Western Tasmania
[edit]No worries, and Happy New Year! It's neat to meet someone who knew Charles' family! This book is cited heavily through the English Language Wikipedia with an invalid ISBN as published by the publisher. Such incorrect ISBNs trigger automatic processes such as SmackBot to tag articles that have "invalid ISBNs." People doing research worldwide, not just in Australia, will have a much easier time, I suggest, finding a book that has a valid OCLC than one that has an invalid ISBN. Later today, I will suggest a compromise format for citing this particular work that should not trigger SmackBot. I'm sure we can come up with something that will work for everyone. Also, we can always retain the ivalid ISBN on the article's talk page; article talk pages do not, as far as I understand, cause error tagging by SmackBot. Kind Regards, Keesiewonder 16:32, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
SatuSuro, please let me know what you think of my first idea for a suggested compromise. You may see it in all its glory at User:Keesiewonder/Whitham_Citation. Please feel free to edit there (assuming the Wiki Gods allow it) if convenient for you. (And, no need to apologize; these pages are near and dear to you, as is the content, I expect. I'm the "intruder!" But a curious, kind one. Maybe I'll be so lucky as to see the Western Coast of Australia some day ... or any part of Australia, for that matter). Kind Regards, Keesiewonder 17:42, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- Cool! Glad to be of help, and to contribute a bit to your inspiration! Keesiewonder 02:03, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
AMH cat
[edit]We have a Category:WikiProject Australian maritime history for WikiProject organisation, but we don't yet have a Category:Maritime history of Australia for encyclopaedic content. We should, seeing as there are categories Category:Military history of Australia and Category:Political history of Australia. Are you going to create it? Hesperian 10:46, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- You have to create the category page first. Click on the red link and edit in the usual way. All you have to do is put the category in its supercategories i.e. Category:History of Australia and Category:Maritime history. Optionally, you can add a heading, something like "This category is for articles related to the maritime history of Australia." Don't mention the WikiProject though; we keep that out of encyclopaedia space.
- Re: Sock: no idea.
- Hesperian 10:56, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Don't know.... One was blatant vandalism, the other more subtle flaming. Considering how many morons there are in this world, and specifically how many racist morons, I don't see any reason to think they're the same. (The temptation to nuke these morons after their first moronic edit is ever-present, but must be resisted for the greater good ;-) )

Jumping newbies
[edit]re your edit... its more than once Ive been trying to relate a newbie and you jump em! Good ed and bad ed? SatuSuro 10:45, 3 January 2007 (UTC) I am not sure what you mean. :) Which newbie? Merbabu 11:01, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Ha ha, SatuSuro's being cryptic again. He gets easier to read with time. I read that as an obscure reference to Good cop/Bad cop. Yes? Hesperian 11:11, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- ah yes, cryptic is one word for it - trying to be javanese (ie, beat around the bush til we get there) is possibly another explanation! ;) :oh yeah - i'd like to develop that Nias article one day. that will allow me to learn about what seems like a fascinateing place - but my project at the moment is the revolution. And then I should finish my half-baked architecture articles, and then rescue a few important U2 articles. As for the revolution, many edits over the last few months, i am guessing, seem to be purely based on what people have been taught at school, and apparent offence seems to be taken at anything that is different to that. So, for every quote i add from, say van Mook, i will have to balance it with something like a Bung Tomo pic to keep eds on side. :) Merbabu 11:15, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Metro
[edit]The word "metropolitan" came to my mind and would be a useful distinction, but not sure how one would word it without sounding awkward or tangled :) Orderinchaos78 02:47, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
That's the spirit! As I've said many times, we should spend more time informing ourselves, and less time talking. Even when the discussion is friendly, it doesn't much help if we haven't fully informed ourselves. What do you propose?
Re: sockpuppets, they are not banned outright. It is certain mis-uses of sockpuppets that are banned. It is permitted (although discouraged) for a person to create sockpuppet account, so long as they don't misuse them. If I requested a checkuser, the checker would refuse the request on the ground that their hasn't been a policy violation. See WP:SOCK for more info.
Hesperian 02:50, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- The only list I can find is here, which lists all WA LGAs, making no distinction between metro and regional. I would lump them all into Category:Local Government Areas of Western Australia. I simply can't see any reason to make a distinction. Hesperian 03:04, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- When I have the time, I'll have a look at the legal structure of LGAs in WA. I had forgotten that we have "regions of councils" (e.g. "Eastern Metropolitan Region of Councils" ("EMROC"), "North East Wheat Belt Region of Councils" ("NEWROC"), etc) that cooperate for economies of scale in things like garbage disposal. This could have a bearing. Hesperian 03:13, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Pop culture in species articles
[edit]Well here's the thing - wiki is supposed to be a comprehensive encyclopedia. When I look up information on a Tiger, i personally expect to at least see a mention of Tigers in pop culture, like Tony the tiger. If any subject has notable crossover into someother field than its obvious one (Biological articles crossing into movies about the subject) we owe it to the reader to mention it so that they can gain a broader appreciation for its prevalence. In the case of Rat, the section is so small that it does not detract from the main article. However, in say Dog, the number of pop culture references is so large that it should be dealt with on it's own page. It all comes down to size. I personally detest creating stub articles just because someone doesn't think the topic belongs in the main article, if it's so short there's no reason to exclude it. -ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 22:50, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
- oh, i'm sorry, no... those crummy lists on ANY page are bunk and should have any unreffed material removed and then rest organized categorically. -ΖαππερΝαππερ BabelAlexandria 00:21, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Orangutan
[edit]I seek your esteemed wisdom kind sir on the fate of the on-going edit war at orangutan - I am not sure whether to -
- (1) suggest a separate article for the belligerent culture person
- (2) seek other remedies - like a vote on the talk page?
- with as much of christmas/solstice goodwill as possible.
- Problem is I consider the belligerent is being provocative - while the reverters can be seen in the same manner. What do you think? I would appreciate any comment SatuSuro 07:41, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry about being so late, as I have been away for two weeks - is Orangutans in popular culture the article in question? It seems to have quietened down somewhat since the separate article was created and if everybody is happy, then that appears to be good. Is it? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:55, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Round Earth Theatre Company, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. invisible
[edit]Armstrong invisible? I would have thought the opposite. I reckon they should change its name to What Armstrong Thinks. Hesperian 23:23, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, I see what you mean now. Funny how most people have never heard the name "Paul Armstrong", yet they have daylight savings because Armstrong wants it. I can handle the blatant editorial, because it is blatant. But when a load of utter crap is presented as news, that upsets me. For example, every media outlet in Australia is reporting that Western Australian wheat farmers want to abolish the single desk... except The West, which is claiming that WA farmers want it kept. Why? - Because Armstrong's campaign against the abolition of the single desk is far more important than presenting an accurate and truthful narrative. Hesperian 01:00, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
- I think what you're trying to say is, The West has jumped the shark. Hesperian 01:24, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I'm well aware, this would more be a collab page that gets speedied when the AID process is complete. The timeline is Battye's and I've confirmed with them that that extent of information is public domain and we need only cite them as the source of the information, although we may not need to as the 1879 article and the first article under each name clearly state what is in short form in the timeline. The 1879 one is a hilarious read too - let's say having an MLC for an editor and an MLC for an owner wasn't a good recipe for a paper that had formerly strongly advocated responsible government - that was oddly enough the reason for the name change to the present. [edit]Hope you don't mind but I saw your post on somebodys talk page and decided to vote on the debate about renaming Perth categories... what a bloody silly question. I wouldn't do it because that would be WP:POINT, but imagine a series of categories about Mukinbudin or Corrigin and you can see how silly this all is... None of these other ones will ever have categories. There's a Melbourne in Florida and a Sydney in Canada too and Melbourne is twice the size of Scotland Perth according to their two articles.
