Blank lines in The Observatory of Economic Complexity article
[edit]Hello JaredGB, and thanks for your work on the The Observatory of Economic Complexity article. I thought I'd just drop by and explain myself, after removing a lot of blank lines from the article.
Blank lines like these may make the page look better on your browser, device and wikipedia 'skin'. But people are accessing wikipedia from a wide variety of devices, including phones and other screen sizes; also, Wikipedia gives a choice of nine skins; people also use different browsers, and, depending on eyesight, readers may set the screen resolution to give text big enough for them to read or change their browser text size setting. People don't always maximise the browser window, and some use their screens in portrait format. Some people use specialised output devices to suit their needs.
With such diversity, it is generally considered best practice to allow the reader's device to flow the text naturally, following simple conventions with regard to headings, paragraph breaks, infoboxes, etc., without trying to coerce the elements of the page to align by inserting multiple blank lines.
I did a bit of reorganisation of your article which I think will address these concerns, but didn't want you to feel that I was spoiling it :) I hope that makes some sense. Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Best wishes — Hebrides (talk) 08:59, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, H!
[edit]Great suggestions. They make sense. I'll continue to use them as I update the page further. Cheers! JaredGB (talk) 12:31, 8 March 2012 (UTC)JaredGB
Adding references can be easy
[edit] Hello! Here's how to add references from reliable sources for the content you add to Wikipedia. This helps maintain the Wikipedia policy of verifiability.
Adding well formatted references is actually quite easy:
- While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "Cite". Click on it.
- Then click on "Templates".
- Choose the most appropriate template and fill in as many details as you can. This will add a well formatted reference that is helpful in case the website link (web URL) becomes inactive (dead/link rot) at some point.
- Click on Preview when you're done filling out the 'Cite (web/news/book/journal)' to make sure that the reference is correct.
- Click on Insert to insert the reference into your editing window content.
- Click on Show preview to Preview all your editing changes.
- Click on Save page. ...and you've just added a complete reference to a Wikipedia article.
You can read more about this on Help:Edit toolbar or see this video File:RefTools.ogv.
Hope this helps, --Shearonink (talk) 02:59, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, S!
[edit]That is super helpful.
