[edit]Hello, Please stop deleting useful additions to Wikipedia. Take a look at some of the pages that I updated. For example, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallulah_Falls,_Georgia has an external reference link that goes to a 404 page. How is this helpful to users of this encyclopedia? All of my edits were specific to the Wikipedia entries in question. No spam for viagra here. So please, be a little bit more careful in what you call spam. ThanksConnieb8745 (talk) 02:40, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- The issue I saw was that all the links you added were to the same website, [1]. This always raises alarm bells, and while the site is not obviously commercial, it doesn't appear to offer the reader more than an FA would, so is not recommended per Wikipedia:External links. I don't see any obvious wrongdoing, so I apologise for the generic spam message, but stand by my previous actions. Regards. Jamesx12345 15:24, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Kathryn McCormick
[edit]Hello, and thank you for your attention to the Kathryn McCormick page. I apologize for adding in the link; and you are entirely correct that such a link doesn't belong in an encyclopedia. What I was trying to do is just state that Kathryn is a designer for the clothing brand Sugar and Bruno. Here are my sources: [1] and [2] Is it acceptable to state the fact that she is a designer for the brand without placing a link?

[edit]Hi James, thanks for taking the time to edit my page on SA Metal http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Ilovescrap&oldid=565337814. Please can you give me some tips on how to get the page published? I sourced original newspaper clippings, scanned these and then uploaded them but the message says that these submissions are not reliable sources? Your assistance is much appreciated Ilovescrap (talk) 07:21, 23 July 2013 (UTC)
- If you could use in-line refs, where each ref is to support a specific fact, that would help. Once that it done I will put it through, as the rest is good. Regards. Jamesx12345 07:42, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi James, please let me know when you have had a chance to review once again. Much appreciated Ilovescrap (talk) 10:20, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry - the problem is that the refs are not in-line, but in a group at the end. By putting the actual text of the reference where you want it, that will sort it out. I changed the first one as an example. Many thanks. Jamesx12345 11:25, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Distance e-Learning (Philippines)
[edit]Hello James, the new article Distance e-Learning (Philippines) is a school project of students under the ICT for Development course at the University of the Philippines Open University. Most of us, if not everyone, are new to editing/creating an article in Wikipedia. There was no intention to especially mention the Philippines. We tried requesting for Distance e-learning (without Philippines at the end) but it was declined several times. We hope that we have demonstrated that distance e-learning is different from distance education and that the sources we cited in the article's AfD page demonstrate that the subject itself is notable. Kind regards, KValcorza (talk) 22:23, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
- OK. I appreciate that you may be new to Wikipedia, and that's fine - after 10,00 edits I'm still learning. If the article is trimmed down, it should be suitable for Distance e-Learning. I honestly do, however, appreciate your enthusiasm, and it always pains me to open an AFD discussion when somebody has put lots of work in. I don't want to see it wasted. Regards. Rejection of Creation of 2013 IQA World Cup article
[edit]Hello James - You recently declined the creation of an article I wrote on the 2013 IQA World Cup as you deemed it non-noteworthy. I would like to submit that there is already a published Wikipedia article on the International Quidditch Association. In that article, there is a section for the 2013 IQA World Cup, so I wanted to create this page to be the main article for the 2013 Cup that can be linked to from that IQA article. I feel that when linked with the IQA article, this article just adds depth to an already growing article. I would like to know if you would consider approving it in light of this. Thank you James TravisUT12 (talk) 21:38, 31 July 2013 (UTC)TravisUT12
- Resubmit it and see what another reviewer thinks. As a muggle, I can't conceivably judge whether coverage is serious or not. I think your article is in a very difficult place for Wikipedia, because it is not so stupid it can be dismissed, nor so serious it has to be included. Regards. Jamesx12345 21:44, 31 July 2013 (UTC)
If I were you I'd leave Maxwell at peer review for a week or so. With any luck other reviewers expert in prose or science or both will look in. I'd say that the article is pretty much ready for nomination as a Good Article. If you later have Featured Article in mind I think you'll need to flesh it out quite a bit more. There are some single sentences in the article that would, I think, need to be whole paras for a Featured Article. But as to that you'd be well advised to consult an editor with a track record in science/mathematics articles. Meanwhile, thank you so much for educating me about that very great man Maxwell. Comet
[edit]Thank you for asking about Comet. I left an answer on my own talk page but think that I would repeat that I like to bring the article to GA/FA, however, better citations are needed and at the moment I don't have the books for it...so maybe later. Soerfm (talk) 12:01, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
- I'm having a go at tidying it up and adding a few references to see if I can bring it up a bit. It might be that I simply don't know enough to add any content, but it's actually quite a comprehensive article as it stands, so it might meet the GA criteria with some more refs (or even just more citations from the same sources.) Automatic Systems' article review
[edit]Hello James,
I saw you rejected the article. I have deleted some lines in the "history" section which may have appeared as advertising. Can you kindly review it once again and let me know if this is enough? If you think other pieces of the article are not neutral enough, can you pls indicate to me which ones I should change and in which way? I'm not a professional writer and I really need some practical help. Thanks in advance.--Mmarraas (talk) 14:12, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I think this article might not be appropriate for Wikipedia. You might want to see the Plain and simple conflict of interest guide for more detailed information why, but essentially, this appears to be a "non-notable" company, which basically limits the content to product details. I wouldn't personally pass this in its current state, but I won't fail it either, so you can get a second opinion. Many thanks. Jamesx12345 15:56, 27 August 2013 (UTC)

I've promoted this, but I'd suggest getting all of the images locally uploaded before FAC; using
This image is in the public domain in the United States because it was first published outside the United States prior to January 1, 1929. Other jurisdictions have other rules. Also note that this image may not be in the public domain in the 9th Circuit if it was first published on or after July 1, 1909 in noncompliance with US formalities, unless the author is known to have died in 1953 or earlier (more than 70 years ago) or the work was created in 1903 or earlier (more than 120 years ago.)[2] |
you're safe no matter what. =) Review follows. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:21, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Lead
- Opening paragraph is a little clunky; in particular, it doesn't flow very well, and I suspect one can explain electromagnetism far more simply han that - I've understood it since I was 10 years old or so, mind you, my father's an electrical engineer. This isn't a blocker for GA, but is worth looking at before FA.
"his foundational work on the rigidity of rod-and-joint frameworks (trusses) like those in many bridges." - rigidity is, of course, a fundamental property. You mean something like "analysing the rigidity".More fundamentally, his work on rigidity is not mentioned outside the lead, making this uncited.
Early life, 1831–39
The section beginning "His father was a man of comfortable means..." to the end of that paragraph is ambiguously cited. In particular, here's a long section after the last cite.
Education, 1839–47
"...rediscovering the regular polyhedron before he received any formal instruction..." - I presume you mean "polyhedra", the plural?"but Maxwell was deemed too young for the work presented" as the next section makes clear, this should read "but Maxwell was deemed to young to present the work himself." - as it stands, the phrasing's natural reading is that people did not believe Maxwell wrote the work himself, due to being too young.
Edinburgh University, 1847–50
"Having had the opportunity to attend the University of Cambridge after his first term Maxwell instead decided to complete the full course of his undergraduate studies at Edinburgh." - This phrasing is a little awkward in context. And could use more commas.
University of Cambridge, 1850–56
"A considerable part of Maxwell's translation of his equations regarding electromagnetism was accomplished during his time at Trinity." - Uncited.
Aberdeen University, 1856–60
This section is very citation-poor. There's large sections at the end of most paragraphs with no obvious citations. The image is from 1869. Why not have a picture of Saturn here, and move the image down a little bit? I know it's meant to show the marriage, but a little more variety in images would be nice.
Later years
More problems with ambiguous and missing citations.
Personality
- I hate to harp on this, but... more uncited bits. "A collection of his poems was published by his friend Lewis Campbell in 1882. Many appreciations of Maxwell remark upon his remarkable intellectual qualities being matched by social awkwardness."
Electromagnetism
"Maxwell was proven correct, and his quantitative connection between light and electromagnetism is considered one of the great accomplishments of 19th century mathematical physics." - Uncited.
Colour analysis
"Maxwell's purpose was not to present a method of colour photography, but to illustrate the basis of human colour perception and to show that the correct additive primaries are not red, yellow and blue, as was then taught, but red, green and blue. The three photographic plates now reside in a small museum at 14 India Street, Edinburgh, the house where Maxwell was born." Uncited. Also, I need to go to India Street. An unfortunate deletion, though, as the location of the plates, and the museum, is interesting. The bit about the red being ultraviolet is poorly set up. It's only clear the red in the photograph is paradoxical at the point the paradox is resolved.
Control theory
Completely uncited.
Experiments in rigidity
Does not exist, but mentioned in lead.- Now briefly discussed, at least. Adam Cuerden (talk) 16:37, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Legacy
- This isn't really a GA-blocker, but Image:James_Clerk_Maxwell_statue_in_George_Street,_Edinburgh.jpg isn't particularly good. It's one of the more awkward angles to take the statue from, and seems awfully tightly-cropped at the top. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:40, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Images
- File:JamesClerkMaxwell-KatherineMaxwell-1869.jpg is a bit poorly documented. Whilst very likely PD in UK, it lacks the documentation that shows this.
- File:James Clerk Maxwell.png only establishes US PD; if that's all that can be established, it needs moved to en-wiki and off Commons.
- File:YoungJamesClerkMaxwell.jpg ditto, though almost certainly PD in UK.
File:Maxwell's demon.svg - Maxwell's demon not described in text; whilst it's perfectly legitimate (and often useful) to describe minor ideas in image captions, it'd need properly described, and cited. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:53, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- I don't know much about the image process, but they look fine to me. Can it be assumed that all photos taken at that time are now in the public domain? 120 years has lapsed since his death, which is what the guideline seems to say.
- There's not much, sadly, on commons for Maxwell. It's a great statue, so if you're about Edinburgh, it might make a Featured pic with the Autumn leaves, something like this. Jamesx12345 20:07, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
The actual text is pretty good, but there's a lot of citation issues, and some infelicities in the description. Adam Cuerden (talk) 15:38, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
Is there any reason you removed the sentence " Maxwell would also go on to disprove mathematically the nebular hypothesis (which stated that the solar system formed through the progressive condensation of a purely gaseous nebula), which forced the proponents of that theory to account for the additional portions of small solid particles."?
- The nebular hypothesis article, which is an FA, makes no mention of Maxwell, which likely means he didn't play a massive role in its development. (I left a reason in the edit summary, but in hindsight, that's not a good place to explain anything.) As a fairly conventional Christian, Maxwell attracts a lot of interest from the more modern Young Earth Creationist movement, which has a lot of rubbish masquerading as science. I didn't much like the idea that he "disproved" what is a fairly accepted theory. I couldn't find much either way, there's this and this, but neither is especially succinct. Neither was my answer :-) Jamesx12345 19:25, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
We're nearly there, then. One more citation, and the images need either documented or moved to en-wiki. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:43, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
On the images, I've found http://www.clerkmaxwellfoundation.org/html/gallery.html which documents them better than any other site I've yet found. No photographer named, but at least the collection is. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:38, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- I've added 2 more refs to thermodynamics, so I think it's all sourced now. Maxwell and his wife now has a PD-UK template, but for young maxwell, there's this, whatever it means. I think the engraving is properly tagged already. Jamesx12345 19:47, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- You're going to get slaughtered at the FA image check, I fear. For example, "As a work from sometime before 1890, in the public domain." - that's not how British copyright works. But, eh, easiest solution is just to reupload all the images locally, making the problem disappear, since you can just use {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} and forget about it.
- Still, eh, since they're all alright for use on en-wiki, I'll kick that can towards FAC. ✓ Pass Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:16, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Many thanks. Before I think about FACs, I need to do a more research and actually read a number of bios. Thanks for the review - definitely worth 4 points (4 points!?) for the Wikicup. Jamesx12345 20:20, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
- Eh, honestly, it's something I should do anyway. It's useful. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:23, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of James Clerk Maxwell
[edit]The article James Clerk Maxwell you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:James Clerk Maxwell for comments about the article. Well done! Message delivered by GA bot, on behalf of Adam Cuerden -- Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:27, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
