Singapore's New Cabinet

Hi Jack, I'm wondering if there should have been any changes to the pages giventhe announcement of the new cabinet. Yes, the positions have changed, but the cabinet has not been sworn in yet. Infact, many websites of the Singapore government (eg MINDEF) still title the Ministers (eg. Teo Chee Hean) as their old titles. Thanks.Other dictionaries are better (talk) 09:17, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Editors were making a lot of changes following the announcement of the Cabinet reshuffle, so I thought I should tidy it up and add reliable references. The article states that the appointments take effect from 21 May, and in any case they will be sworn in tomorrow. Rewrite of Xiaxue

Hello, Jacklee! Have you finished your PhD? Looks like no Singapore-related articles attained GA status during my year-long wikibreak. Fret not, though, for I am back and have just rewritten Xiaxue, an article which could break our GA jinx! Before the article goes to GAN, it needs to be copyedited, updated and checked for BLP compliance. Perhaps you could help copyedit and BLP check it? Do you still have access to Factiva? For "Tampines Rovers", I think you will still need to seriously try and narrow down your search. It is probably better if you identify certain issues relating to Tampines Rovers that require references than try and read everything relating to them between 2007 and the present. Jewel of Muscat

Hi

I realise you are on a break, sort of, but wondered if there was any outside chance that you could persuade someone to go and take a picture of the Jewel and the stitching? I have had a series of emails back and forth between the Jewel Project and myself, but there is a current issue over licensing which means I have not been able to use the pictures they sent me as yet.

Do you mean the actual ship? I'm not aware that it is currently displayed in public. As for the model, the problem is that it is a copyrighted artwork presently not on permanent display. We can photograph and upload it if it is eventually put on permanent display as the freedom of panorama exception to copyright will apply. Rollback

Hi, I often preview when trying to hit save, as my mouse hits my keyboard :¬) I also end up with a lot of typos as my bluetooth keyboard has some sort of lag dyslexia, the most common is double caps (THe, CHaosdruid etc.) when the caps lock takes longer to release than me pressing the second letter.

I did try editing on my smart-phone but found that it has some weird truncation problem that cuts up a page leaving only the first 30kb - thats why I call them not-so-smartphones nowadays. Chaosdruid (talk) 07:38, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

At the moment there is a four day hiatus while the GA reviewer is busy at work.

The images had become an issue - I originally just hid them with a drop down before realising that no matter which way I tried, the alt= and alt text were not working (in fact alt= was visible). The GA reviewer thinks they would be better spread out over the page, but I am not so sure. I was trying to keep it more balanced between shipwreck and treasure, as they are equally important, but without the Jewel pics (as they have not emailed me back yet) perhaps it might be better to spread them around. With the GA review due I thought I had better try and sort them out; I tried so many different ways, sizes and types of display, drop downs, wikitables and boxing that I just gave up after three hours, I couldn't even see my monitor properly and had to go to bed. Surprise surprise, the very next day the review started lol - I thought "oh crap, the images!" but when I went to look you had already sorted them out :¬)

Wikitext does take a bit of getting used to. Have a look at "Help:Table". Essentially, it is useful to know that if you want to use a table structure to align objects but not have the table appear formatted as a table with shaded cells, then don't add "class="wikitable"". — Cheers, JackLee ^–talk– 08:41, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Belitung

Hi, and good morning!

I thought I would be safe from edit conflicts this early, how silly of me lol.

They are just for testing at the moment. I am searching for a free satellite image of the coast for a magnified view of the red cross and entrance to the harbour at Tanjung Pandan. If I make the red cross any bigger it will drown it out on the full size pic, which is how people are supposed to view it, click them to see the full size pic.

The svg is also a test, I already know I have to cut out Russia, just needed to see the proportions of text and green box etc. and if the dotted line was visible that small, which it isn't.

The route map is great but it raises a question which you might not feel inclined to deal with at this stage. We are already discussing that in the GAR. The real issue is the amount of detail to go into at this stage. If it fails the GAR, or passes it, then I will carry on now that the Sackler material is stable. They did change some things but they do not seem to have made any recent changes. I am aiming to expand the article by probably another 50-100%. There is so much detail not in there yet.

So basically I am just doing what needs to be done to address the issues raised by the reviewer at this stage: if you haven't seen it, the GA1 page is here - Talk:Belitung shipwreck/GA1. He has almost finished going through it, hopefully I can start the edits this afternoon and get everything completed by this evening. I do not want to start just yet as I need to ensure everything is ready to go and I am reading through all the articles from the Sackler exhibition programme again [1] to see what changes need to be made. For example, someone has got the coordinates wrong. The Sackler coordinates are in the middle of the South China Sea, about 500km south-east of Belitung. Yes, that's what I meant when I said you may not want to do deal with that issue now. It is probably better to work to getting it GA first (unless the reviewer insists that this topic be dealt with now), and then add the information later. I was going to put a short section in about "Route and cargo", expanding slightly on that which is already included in the lead, including the info on routes known of through various period sources and the different items found that show the varied crew and possible locations of repairs. Updates on Goh Keng Swee, Pathlight School and Factiva

I was going to file a peer review and copyediting request for Goh Keng Swee, to prepare the article for a GA nomination. However, I read the article again and saw several "citation needed" tags in the Political career section. Could you please add citations to the identified paragraphs? You have put a lot of effort into this excellent article and adding several citations would not take much more effort. Why let several unreferenced paragraphs prevent the article from attaining GA status, which it certainly deserves?

Thanks for helping me obtain newspaper articles about Pathlight School from the Factiva database! My rewrite of the Pathlight School article is currently in progress and should be complete by the end of the month. Would you like to take a look at the article?

There is a saying that the reward for a job well done is more work, which seems particularly true on Wikipedia! So sorry to trouble you again, but could you help me do more Factiva searches, for the following terms?

• Newspaper articles containing "Kelvin Tan", "Chen Weilian" or "陈伟联" (for a rewrite of the article about visually impaired Singaporean Mandopop singer Kelvin Tan)
• Newspaper articles containing "Fandi Ahmad", from November 2007 onwards (in November 2007, another editor did a search and emailed me over 3000 articles, so I only need articles from November 2007 onwards; going to rewrite Fandi Ahmad)
• Newspaper articles containing "National Kidney Foundation", from July 2005 onwards, Singapore sources only (if there are too many articles, ask me to narrow down the dates; going to rewrite NKF scandal)
• Newspaper articles containing "mrbrown", from 2002 onwards (if there are too many results, try searching for articles which contain "mrbrown" and at least one of the following terms: "blog", "blogger" and "Lee Kin Mun"; going to rewrite mrbrown)
• Newspaper articles containing both "Tampines Rovers" and "Tampines Stadium" (for the Stadium section of Tampines Rovers FC; if there are too many articles, limit results to January 2007 onwards)
• Newspaper articles containing both "Tampines Rovers" and "Geylang United" (for the Supporters section of the abovementioned article; if there are too many articles, limit results to January 2007 onwards)

Factiva searches

Thanks so much for the articles about Fandi Ahmad, mrbrown and Tampines Rovers! Looks like I can finish rewriting Fandi Ahmad within a couple of weeks. I understand that there were too many results for "Kelvin Tan" and "National Kidney Foundation" for you to send them to me. Since the singing career of Kelvin Tan began with his Project Superstar win in September 2005, perhaps you could redo the search for "Kelvin Tan" but restrict the search to articles from 2005 onwards (or July 2005 onwards)? If Factiva supports searching in Mandarin, a search for "陈伟联" would also be appreciated.

My search request for "National Kidney Foundation" (Singapore sources only) is about to get more complicated. Further investigation reveals that in March 2008, another Wikipedian had sent me articles for my rewrite of NKF scandal. However, almost a quarter of the pages he sent me seem to have gone missing from my Gmail inbox. Could you send me articles from the date ranges covered by the missing pages?

• between 13 July 2005 and 4 September 2005 exclusive
• between 22 December 2005 and 25 December 2005 exclusive
• between 25 April 2006 and 7 May 2006 exclusive
• between 16 January 2007 and 1 March 2007 exclusive

I did the Kelvin Tan search from September 2005 onwards. There were 1,770 entries, which is really too much for me to retrieve. I can only retrieve 100 entries at a time, which means having to download 18 pages worth of articles. Also, the database is quite slow. I do not think Factiva includes articles in Mandarin. Please use NewspaperSG for articles before 2006, and suggest a more targeted search for the post-2006 articles. As for the NKF articles, once again please use NewspaperSG for the pre-2006 articles, and I will look into retrieving the remainder if there aren't too many. I tried using NewspaperSG, but it requires me to retrieve articles one at a time, which would take months! How long does it take you to retrieve one batch of a hundred articles? Each date range (listed above) for the "National Kidney Foundation" search would get about one to three hundred articles. Feel free to take two or even three sittings to send me all the articles about Kelvin Tan (and feel free to take a couple of weeks). In the long run, I will look for other people who could perform Factiva searches for me, but for now, please help me with the searches. Yes, in the long run please find others who can help you with the searches as well, or if Factiva is available at the National Library or elsewhere. How soon I can do the searches for you will depend on how busy I am with other stuff. I don't mind doing a search once in a while for a limited number of articles, but am not keen on having to do this regularly for numerous articles that you may be interested to work on. Sorry, I know that downloading thousands of articles is not your idea of fun. Please bear with me for the above searches and another two groups of about six searches each. The above searches can be completed in three sittings (one for the NKF articles, two for the Kelvin Tan articles) and would keep me busy for the rest of 2011. For the next two groups, I would select search topics and terms with fewer results, and they would last me the whole of 2012 and part of 2013. After that, if I get a confirmed place in NUS, I would be able to access Factiva on campus. I have contacted the two Wikipedians who helped me conduct Factiva searches back in 2007, but neither has replied. Since Pathlight School has attained GA status, once I complete Fandi Ahmad, I would take a break from Wikipedia until I receive the articles (at least the NKF ones) from you. --J.L.W.S. Charles James Lyall

Please do not insert the image of the monument at Faisalabad into the above article. If you check the history for the last 24 hours then you will see that the monument is not in fact for CJL but for James Broadwood Lyall. The entire article was screwed up by poor contributors who did not check their sources. Furthermore, the image itself is the subject of a rename request at Commons precisely because of this huge mess, and Faisalabad is also going to need some major work doing o it. Well, it is not for CJL. Aside from anything else, and as his article says, CJL died & was buried in London. It is clear from his career that he had no connection to Faisalabad, whereas the claim is that he founded the place. I am 99& sure that monument (it says "tomb") is of James Broadwood Lyall (I have a draft article nearly ready to go live in relation to him) ... but I am 100% sure that it cannot be for CJL. The description, as opposed to the article title, does I think say "Sir James Lyall" - it is a complete and utter mess of ill-thought, although well-intentioned, contributions. In fact, it one of the biggest such messes I have come across, completely misrepresenting a statement of fact in several different articles & then each of those articles has built on the initial misrepresentation because of adding further unsourced content. Well, I hope you are able to sort it out. I am wondering if the image needs to be renamed for clarity. I suppose I should wait for confirmation about whose monument (or tomb?) it is. The original description of the photograph was this: "Here lies the tomb of Sir Charles James Lyall, the founder of the city of Faisalabad." I guess I should change this to read "Sir James Broadwood Lyall". But (1) is it a tomb? (2) did Charles James Lyall or James Broadwood Lyall found the city of Faisalabad?
