hello all .. I am a first-time article contributor of the "Gay Teachers Fight to Teach - The Case of Joe Acanfora", and clearly admit I am not up to speed on protocols and styles of Wiki articles. I noticed my article was tagged today, but without providing any details of problematic issues. I'd love the article to be 'cleaned up" and am anxious to improve it myself with guidance. Is it proper to flag without identifying problems? Why does the article not appear based upon a search?

the recent edit to change of title article from "Gay Teachers Battle to Teach - The Case of Joe Acanfora" to "Joe Acanfora"
[edit]hello ... thanks for taking the time to consider the subject article. As the original author, I considered whether the proper name of this article should be "Joe Acanfora" or "Gay Teachers Battle to Teach - The Case of Joe Acanfora", and decided on the latter. Since the article cover only a 3 year period and narrow scope of the life of Joe Acanfora, it seemed more appropriate and descriptive to entitle it with the "case" reference and the "gay teachers" reference. If it were on Joe Acanfora alone, it would cover 50 more years of his life and many other topics. What do you think? I am a first-time contributor so not sure if or how to change the title back???? --Ja3ja3 13:03, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, there. Please, take a look at some of the links up there in the welcome message. As for the "cleanup", that was put there because your article didn't really follow some of our conventions for writing -- making internal links in particular is one that comes to mind, along with how to reference outside pages. I moved the page in consideration of some of the ideas of our naming conventions page: having it at Joe Acanfora seems more "encylopedic" than your title, which sounds more like a newspaper or magazine article. (see you've moved it back; ok, and you'll note that Joe Acanfora is now a redirect to the other title, which helps other editors if Joe gets references in other articles or if someone searches for him. Here's an idea: why don't you post a message on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies, announcing your article and asking, as a 1st-timer, for some help with it? Another thing: I'm assuming you are Joe. Generally, we discourage writing autobiographical articles (see WP:AUTO), but in this case, I think any concerns arising from that could be addressed by having the article seen by another set of eyes or two. Drop me a note if you have other questions, ok? Bolivian Unicyclist 16:12, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- thanks so much again .. I just posted a "cry for help" at the LGBT site as you suggested. Yes, I debated over the auto-bio limitation, but hoped the objective sources of all the data would overcome that ... do you know why the article does not get "hit" based on searches on "gay teachers" or "Joe Acanfora"????? ... thank you again Ja3ja3 16:30, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
- Not sure why the searches don't work; perhaps there's a delay in updating the database. (typing "joe acanfora" in the search box there on the left and pressing "go" does work, thanks to the redirect that was created in the page move.) Any case, the internal search function here is not great; what I do is run an external Google search using the parameter "site:en.wikipedia.org" in the search box, gets you much better results. Of course, it also takes a day or two for Google to index new pages. Good luck with the WP:LGBT crowd! Bolivian Unicyclist 17:01, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
