Welcome
[edit]Hi JHMusic, and welcome to Wikipedia! I've written some advice on editing here for students in Prof. Jackson's similar classes at Longy School of Music which you might find helpful. You'll find it here. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page (User talk:Voceditenore), or place {{helpme}} here on your talk page, ask your question, and another editor will come along to help. When you leave a message here or on any other talk page, be sure to sign it by typing ~~~~ (4 tildes with no spaces between them) at the end. When you click save, the Wikipedia software will automatically convert that show your user name and your talk page (with links to them) as well as the date and time when you signed. WP:SIGN has more about all the ins and outs of that.
You might also be interested in WikiProject Classical music and WikiProject Composers. They have various guidelines for articles in this area and talk pages where you can ask advice from editors experienced in writing articles on classical music and related subjects. You'll find these guides particularly useful: WikiProject Composers: Guide to online research and WikiProject Composers: Copyright guidelines. Advice on Draft:Opera in the 21st Century
[edit]Hi JHMusic. I don't think this is an easily viable subject as a stand-alone article, especially for a novice Wikipedia editor. The reviewer was correct in observing that it is currently more like an essay consisting of rather loosely connected points. One possibility is to convert it to a list of 21st century operas. To compose your list take a look here starting with Category:2000 operas and continuing through to Category:2018 operas. You can write a preamble to the list incorporating and developing some of the material in the current draft. See List of Orphean operas and List of Christmas operas for some ideas on how to approach this. WP:LIST has links to pages with more general guidance on creating and formatting list articles. I will fix the referencing format on your current draft to show you the correct way to add citations. Note also that you need to check your preamble for accuracy. For example the current draft states "The Met began its commissioning program for new operas in 2006". Actually, the Met has had commissioning programs for new operas in the past, e.g. the one initiated by Giulio Gatti-Casazza during his career at the Met (1908–1935). Hope this helps. I'll keep an eye on your progress, but don't hesitate to ask me for more help or guidance. Best wishes, Voceditenore (talk) 09:13, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your help! I originally intended to make an addition to the Opera page, but I clearly got confused during the submission process. Also, I hadn't heard of Gatti-Casazza's commissioning programs before, so thank you for making me aware. At this point, our semester is over in three days and I don't have any intentions to continue working on Wikipedia beyond giving my best effort to the class assignment. Other than submitting a suitable addition to the opera page, I don't think I can reasonably hope to do the research and work necessary for creating a list of 21st century operas comparable or complimentary to what has already been presented in the links you sent. Do you think there is any chance I may be able to make such an addition, and if so, what do you recommend? Again, my sincerest gratitude for all your aid! Best regards,
