User talk:IvanTyrrell
Hey
[edit]Ivan,
first, please don't redirect your talk page to a normal article talk page. that's incredibly confusing for people trying to leave you messages. if you want to have a user name like 'seeker after truth' you can probably request a name change. see Wikipedia:Username_policy#Changing_your_username. or you could just make a link to (or transclude part of) the Idres Shah page, if you like.
second, I'm a little concerned about edits like this on Human_givens. my concern is two-fold:
- you have the same name as one of the major proponents of the subject, which might imply a conflict of interest, and certainly implies that you have a point of view. neither is a problem, really: you can edit an article with a COI as long as you're not advocating a position, and points of view are unavoidable for every editor, and simply need to be balanced appropriately. I just want to clarify whether you're the originator of this idea or just a major fan of it.
- this particular edit you made maybe shifted from original research to improper synthesis, but it didn't really resolve the issue. the problem here is that you seem to be explaining the principles of this theory without reference to scholarly sources or third-party publications. to a certain extent that's non-problematic, but when (as with this article, and the one on dreaming) it starts to sound like you're promoting the subject rather than merely describing it, it starts to sound unencyclopedic
really, what you need to do with these articles is provide references from credible uninvolved sources to show both that these topics are sufficiently notable for inclusion in the encyclopedia, and that the claims you make about the topic are objective claims. otherwise, the articles are likely to get deleted.
does that make sense? --Ludwigs2 15:51, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
P.s. - where you trying to change your user name to 'Seeker after truth'? you'd do that through the Special:UserLogin/signup page, which will create the account in User space, not in article space.
Thanks
[edit]Thank you Ludwicks2. That's very helpful. I am new to this. About the user name, I wasn't wanting a user name of Seeker after truth. I'm just trying to add the book of that name as an article but did something wrong, which I'm going to try and work out what so it can be uploaded properly as an article of that name.
I will work some more on the Human Givens article and the dreaming article. They are important topics in psychology and psychotherapy and I have written about them so I can see why people would say I might not be balanced. In my defence I am widely recognised in the UK as an expert on psychotherapy and the topic of why we evolved to dream and am asked to speak at universities and conferences about these topics. I took the trouble to put this stuff up on Wikipedia at the suggestion of others because I am knowledgable. I can see what you mean about making them more encyclopedic in tone though, and will add more references from notable sources. Hopefully other people will help in this. I'll get back on to it at the weekend.
Thanks again for your advice.

- Hi Ivan, maybe create a page such as User:IvanTyrrell/Sandbox123 for article development? Cheers, Esowteric (talk) 10:53, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
Welcome

Article creation
[edit]Hi Ivan, I took the liberty of creating the article on The Hundred Tales of Wisdom which I believe you had been trying to create, unsuccessfully, on your own user page. To create an article on one of Shah's books, you can wikilink the title, as you did here. If no such article exists, the title will appear in red. Then just click on the red link, and you will be able to create a correctly named article in the Wikipedia mainspace. So the way to create an article is not to create an article on your own user page, and then move your user page to mainspace using the Move function!
Please let me know if this makes sense and if I've understood your intent correctly. Also note that I (or others) would not usually edit your user page or copy material from it; if my doing so is unwelcome (I blanked your user page after having transferred the material for your new article), I will of course cease. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here or on my talk page.
Another thing, please try to bring in more independent sources for these articles on Shah's books. I believe Shah's books meet Wikipedia's notability criteria (WP:N), but ideally we should have a little more than an endorsement by Doris Lessing, who as Shah's pupil is unlikely ever to have written anything critical of his works. So a wider range of responses and sources would be useful for a rounded article. Best, Jayen466 19:53, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
Octagon Press Ltd
[edit]Hi, I've created the article Octagon Press Ltd, so wikilinks should work now. It still has a "may not be notable" tag on it, but with a lot of help from User:Jayen466, an experienced editor, we should be over that hurdle now. Cheers, Esowteric (talk) 14:35, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- Correction, Ivan. It looks like the article is lacking sources that have anything substantial to say directly about Octagon Press. Esowteric (talk) 18:40, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
