Roche estimates that 50 million people have been treated with oseltamivir.[1] The majority of these have been in Japan, where an estimated 35 million have been treated.[2]

In 2009, with increasing fears about the potential for a new influenza pandemic, swine flu, oseltamivir has received substantial media attention. --The real boffin man`. (talk) 08:34, 5 May 2009 (UTC) Treatment and prevention consists of-

To quote User:Pigkeeper-

"Doctor says bird flu drug is ‘useless’ Dr Nguyen Tuong Van runs the intensive care unit at the Centre for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi and has treated 41 victims of H5N1. Van followed World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines and gave her patients Tamiflu, but concluded it had no effect.

“We place no importance on using this drug on our patients,” she said. “Tamiflu is really only meant for treating ordinary type A flu. It was not designed to combat H5N1 . . . (Tamiflu) is useless.”

Van... said avian flu had a frightening effect on its victims and the only way to keep patients alive was to “support” all their vital organs, including the liver and kidneys, with modern technology such as ventilators and dialysis machines.

“Laboratory studies show that Tamiflu is effective against all strains of flu,” said Bill Hall, director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory, who defended Ireland’s stockpiling of Tamiflu and other flu treatments. “The only limitation is when it is not administered within the first 24 hours of onset of symptoms.”

The WHO admitted Tamiflu had not been widely successful in humans. “However, we believe in many Asian countries it hasn’t been used until late in the illness,” a spokesman said.

Take what you will from this. In person experience like this is definitely worth a lot. But the WHO may have a point: when is this stuff given? The original studies on 'regular' flu administered the drug within ~40 hours after onset of symptoms. This also isn't calling into question the prophylactic efficacy of tamiflu. The efficacy there is actually pretty high for regular flu. Pigkeeper 22:01, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Pigkeeper"

Here is a report from Canada about a test showing that tamiflu is 98% infective due to virus immunity to the medicine [http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/03/02/tamiflu-resistance.html}!--86.29.254.128 (talk) 13:57, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

H5N1!

H5N1 is an Influenza A virus subtype. Experts believe it might mutate into a form that transmits easily from person to person. If such a mutation occurs, it might remain an H5N1 subtype or could shift subtypes as did H2N2 when it evolved into the Hong Kong Flu strain of H3N2. --86.25.55.164 (talk) 09:53, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Horse flu may have caused the Aussie bloke to fall ill with 'swine flue'.

The continent/country of Australia had remained free of equine influenza until an outbreak in August 2007. While the virus was successfully contained and Australia has returned to its equine influenza-free status, the outbreak had significant effects to the country's racing industry.

Location of initial outbreak, 24 August 2007

An outbreak of equine influenza (EI) in Australia was confirmed by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries on 24 August 2007 in Sydney. Also known as "horse flu" and "A1 influenza", the rapid outbreak was of the Influenza A virus strain of subtype H3N8. While the virus is highly contagious, it rarely kills adult horses but the performance of thoroughbred racing horses can be affected for several weeks. It can be fatal to young foals and debilitated horses.[5]--86.29.250.122 (talk) 11:41, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

What does 'human created' means?

I have listen several rumours about A-H1N1-2009 is a human created virus.

Amazing! synthetic biology is believed to be very mature to design and create a new malevolent virus.

Human created does not necessarily means a human designed virus

A-H1N1-2009 is in fact a human created virus, it is the result of evolution by the interaction of birds, pigs and humans in farms.

Even if its genetically designed, its not necessarily a malevolent created virus

Some research is done in studying virus sequences in order to predict future mutations. Given the predicted mutations it is possible to synthesize the new sequence to produce vaccines with `dead' attenuated viruses before the virus evolves to the predicted mutation. As far as I know this method is not mature yet.

My suggestion is you can add information about
such theory in the article, just be careful
checking citations, being serious not alarmist.
It means, be clear about the context in which
it may be true, and the possibility of
 the hypothesis.

Good idea!--Its snowing in East Asia (talk) 08:31, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Cat flu

"In Bangkok, Thailand, all the cats in one household are known to have died of H5N1 in 2004. Tigers and leopards in Thai zoos also died, while in 2007 two cats near an outbreak in poultry and people in Iraq were confirmed to have died of H5N1, as were three German cats that ate wild birds. In Austria cats were infected but remained healthy". Cats in Indonesia were also found to have been infected with H5N1.[10]

The spread to more and more types and populations of birds and the ability of felidae (cats) to catch H5N1 from eating this natural prey means the creation of a reservoir for H5N1 in cats where the virus can adapt to mammals is one of the many possible pathways to a pandemic.

Germany, February 28, 2006!

A dead cat infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus was found in Germany.[11] --86.29.248.143 (talk) 12:45, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Human flu!

Human flu is a term used to refer to influenza cases caused by Orthomyxoviridae that are endemic to human populations (as opposed to infection relying upon zoonosis). It is an arbitrary categorization scheme, and is not associated with phylogenetics-based taxonomy. Human flu-causing viruses can belong to any of three major influenza-causing Orthomyxoviruses — Influenza A virus, Influenza B virus and Influenza C virus.--86.29.246.3 (talk) 19:33, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Pandemic flu

An influenza pandemic is an epidemic of an influenza virus that spreads on a worldwide scale and infects a large proportion of the human population. In contrast to the regular seasonal epidemics of influenza, these pandemics occur irregularly, with the 1918 Spanish flu the most serious pandemic in recent history. Pandemics can cause high levels of mortality, with the Spanish influenza estimated as being responsible for the deaths of over 50 million people. There have been about three influenza pandemics in each century for the last 300 years. The most recent ones were the Asian Flu in 1957 and the Hong Kong Flu in 1968.[12]--86.25.55.164 (talk) 09:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

WHO total deaths 46

WHO totals 2500[2] N/A 44[2]

The ref says

Mexico has reported 1204 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 44 deaths. The United States has reported 896 laboratory confirmed human cases, including two deaths.

And the WHO map of deaths and cases says 2,500 and 46 deaths.

The last two pandemics killed around 1 million people each, so why does the table only mention U.S. deaths? The key word here is "pandemic". cyclosarin (talk) 23:12, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
