Administrators' newsletter – August 2019
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2019).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Following a request for comment, the page Wikipedia:Office actions has been changed from a policy page to an information page.
- A request for comment (permalink) is in progress regarding the administrator inactivity policy.
- Editors may now use the template {{Ds/aware}} to indicate that they are aware that discretionary sanctions are in force for a topic area, so it is unnecessary to alert them.
- Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
- The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.
Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

You've marked this article as requiring revision deletion but you haven't, as far as I can tell, removed the offending material nor specified which revisions need deleting; both of which are pre-requisites to deletion. If you want to remove the offending material you've found and identify when it was added, I'll deal with the revdel. Nthep (talk) 21:50, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

Tennessee State Route 339
Can you please explain to me why my article has been nominated deletion. I really do think you mean well but can you at least give it a chance. It didn’t even last 3 minutes before you proposed it for deletion. I am from East Tennessee, born and raised, and this is a particular passion of mine to provide a complete list of articles on every state route in Tennessee, especially in this part of the state, as it is done in other states. Please don’t delete this. BDAN88 (talk) 14:17, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

New pages reviewer and AFC
This request for help from administrators has been answered. If you need more help or have additional questions, please reapply the {{admin help}} template, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their own user talk page. |
Hi admins, I hope you are doing OK and that life is treating you very well. I was given the new page reviewer right by Kudpung for 3 months. I have been reviewing new pages for a while. I also asked to be on Articles for Creation but the same administrator declined to put on the list. He thinks I won't need the NPR right at all, but I really want to review new pages for the foreseeable future. Do you think now would be a good time to ask for NPR right permanently? I also asked Oshwah on his talk page, but he seems to be offline. See here. Interstellarity (talk) 18:34, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- (Non-administrator comment) - just an FYI this would seem more appropriate for WP:PERM (unless you just wanted to ask a question rather than actually ask for the permanent userright, sorry if so), but for any Admin looking at it, it's worth seeing the AfC applicant thread - the Interstellarity wasn't just refused access for no reason. Nosebagbear (talk) 08:39, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Nosebagbear: What I am asking is whether now would be a good time to ask for the new page reviewer permanently or not? Should I request now or not? Interstellarity (talk) 12:23, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- (Non-administrator comment), that depends on a couple of things

- 1) I see you've done about 40 reviews, which is fine
- 2) Are you within the final 2 weeks of your probation period? If not, then there isn't much of a benefit. AfC didn't decline you because you were on NPP probation, but for the reasons above. The PERM admins would probably find it a bit odd if you went for the permanent right within the next month. Is there a particular reason you want it now?
- 3) Do you understand the 2 reasons why AfC declined your application? This isn't a trick or aggressive question - you clearly are helping the encyclopedia, but 1 was a bit odd and the other an easy early mistake, so I just want to make sure they're not repeated. Nosebagbear (talk) 12:32, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Nosebagbear: It seems like the best thing to do is to wait until my trial ends and then apply for NPR after it expires. Also, I don't quite understand why my AFC application was declined. Could you explain why? Interstellarity (talk) 13:32, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- So reason 1 was when you said "I hold the new page reviewer rights on Wikipedia. Since there isn't much pages to review," - NPP has a massive backlog, and there was concern on how a reviewer could not know this if they were sufficiently active.
- The next facet was the misuse of a G1 CSD which is for gibberish pages. It has an extremely low bar to pass to be invalid (i.e. if you can make anything out, it doesn't apply), and its misuse is viewed as particularly concerning, because speedy deletions skip most of the oversight for the deletion of articles. As you were using that as evidence for knowing the deletion policy, it pushed those who were unsure about your activity to oppose. Nosebagbear (talk) 13:38, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Nosebagbear: I do understand your reasoning. When I said Since there isn't much pages to review,, the reasoning was I had a setting that filtered only certain pages to review. I later found out that there were way more pages to review and I turned off the setting so that it shows more pages to review. Interstellarity (talk) 13:49, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
- That's good - whenever you do apply permanently, it's probably worth mentioning that, since the AfC discussion will probably come up and it's always worth getting out ahead of it and owning your mistakes. Nosebagbear (talk) 13:54, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

Since Nosebagbear has explained the situation as capably as any administrator could, there doesn't seem to be any admin action needed here, so I'm closing the help template. Yunshui 雲水 18:48, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Declining your nomination of me for Adminship
Hi there. As explained on my talk page, I have felt it necessary to decline your unexpected nomination of me for adminship. I think it would have been much less awkward for us both had you thought to discuss this with me first, as normally happens, or appreciated my reasons why I cannot stand right now - as explained in the other recent discussion there. Nevertheless, thank you for your support... and your keenness. Don't let it carry you away! Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:07, 18 August 2019 (UTC)

Issuing level 1 warning about removing AfD template from articles before the discussion is complete. (Peachy 2.0 (alpha 8))
Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with List of mayors of Taunton, Massachusetts. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. This is an automated message from a bot about this edit, where you removed the deletion template from an article before the deletion discussion was complete. If this message is in error, please report it.—cyberbot ITalk to my owner:Online 03:49, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think there was any need for a warning here. All the user seemed to be doing was trying to withdraw the nomination which was clearly heading for a WP:SNOW keep close. Interstellarity, to do that, you should just write a comment at the bottom of the discussion saying you want to withdraw and wait for an administrator to close it, which will usually happen as long as no one has called for delete in the meantime. We don't generally delete AFD pages once other editors have commented. Requesting deletion is only appropriate if you made a simple error, such as accidentally nominating the wrong article, and you make the request before any discussion takes place. SpinningSpark 14:25, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Spinningspark: Thanks, I have put a statement at the bottom of the page that I withdraw the nomination. Interstellarity (talk) 16:13, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
Rangunia moved to draft?
I understood what did you wanted to say! But I just created that article a few hours ago. You could have informed me before moving to draft. It worths time. I will add proper citations and sources. Then this article will be a main article. Answer me why did you redirected the page that was just created only a few hours ago. And a important thing is you have to visit an article named 'Bengal Potatoes. That article doesn't have even one citation aur source. If that article(Bengal Potatoes) can remain as a main article for such a long time after creation why shouldn't be my article be remained as a main article?. If you think that Rangunia doesn't have enough citations and for that reason you redirected that article to a draft then you must and have to move the Bengal potatoes article to a draft. Please answer quickly. Please remember I am a gentle wikipedian.Great Hero32 (talk) 13:25, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Great Hero32. The best thing to do is to work on the article and then submit the draft for review once you are done. They will determine whether it is ready to be moved to the mainspace. Interstellarity (talk) 14:20, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
Ok, Interstellarity (talk) let assume you are suberb! But did you visited the page named Bengal Potatoes. If you hadn't then as soon as you see this writing go through the page. And tell me that article is worthy to or not. And reply me hereGreat Hero32 (talk) 16:38, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
This help request has been answered. If you need more help, you can , contact the responding user(s) directly on their user talk page, or consider visiting the Teahouse. |
- @Great Hero32: I will let another editor review this. I have placed the help me template to get their attention. Interstellarity (talk) 19:02, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Interstellarity, please self revert. Per WP:GEOLAND,
Populated, legally recognized places are typically presumed to be notable, even if their population is very low. Even abandoned places can be notable, because notability encompasses their entire history.
. It clearly meets notability guidelines, and you have no reason to draftify it. You draftified it, so you should take responsibility. It's not something you need 3rd opinion for. Also you asked an unusual question on help channel, may I ask why? Masum Reza📞 19:36, 20 August 2019 (UTC)- @Masumrezarock100: I'm very interested in the stats of Wikipedia so that's why I asked. Interstellarity (talk) 20:11, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Great Hero32: Please feel free to continue to work on the article like you were doing. Interstellarity is a new editor, so he sometimes rushes things. You've made the correct choice and asked him the reason for draftifying it. Also I suggest adding more sources and more information (cited by reliable sources, of course) to the article. Thanks. Masum Reza📞 19:43, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- While notability is not an issue here, the page is an almost-empty shell with more space devoted to the headings of empty sections than to content. It's clearly a work in progress, not something ready to be a live article. There are also issues of verifiability that should be fixed - and fixing them would either mean significant work or removing parts of what little content there is. For example, the population is wrong (that's the municipality, not the town), the population year is wrong (Banglapedia is based on 2001 data), and the mayor is not given in the cited source. Under these circumstances, turning the page into a draft seems reasonable to me. For now I'll redirect Rangunia to the article on the upazila. Huon (talk) 20:18, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- I have listed the draft at WP:RMTR and should be moved shortly. Interstellarity (talk) 20:33, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Regarding your request to Oshwah, following a review of your patrolls,I do not believe there is sufficient experience to accord permanent access to the user right yet. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:03, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
