How to alert other editors
[edit]Hello! I noticed that you were trying to 'ping' another editor at the Teahouse. Unfortunately, that 'ping' did not work since it was not done the right way, but I'm sure the editor will see it and get back to you anyhow. Here is a little guide about "How to use the phone" on Wikipedia:
When someone is posting on your talk page you get an automatic notification. That notification is a small blue sign followed by a long yellow box at the top of your page (for most browsers and settings). In all other cases you have to alert the other editor in some way, either by "ping" or by mentioning them in a link. This will result in just the red sign notification on top of that users page. So even if you respond on your talk page you still have to alert the editor you are addressing. If you want to get hold of me you write {{ping|W.carter}} resulting in @W.carter: or [[User:W.carter|W.carter]] resulting in W.carter and sign with the four "squiggles" ~~~~ at the end and hit "Save". There are some more, but these are the basics. And when you ask something on someone's talk page, you also create a new section so your question don't get entangled in some other conversation. If you are having a conversation with another user on some page, it is also customary to add that page to your Watchlist in case someone in the discussion forgets to alert.
The policy is to leave an answer on the same page as the question, keep the conversation intact unless there is some reason for moving it elsewhere. Like complicated questions at the Teahouse can be continued on the appropriate talk page.
As for your question: Check out this page Wikipedia:Awards and this one Wikipedia:WikiLove. WikiLove is also accessed through the little red heart on other editors talk pages (you can not give it to yourself. ). w.carter-Talk 08:17, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
@W.carter: Hi and thanks for the tip. I must say I find the chat system a bit difficult, but I bet it gets easier once I get used to it. I hope this is the correct way of replying to your message.
- Yes, it can be a bit confusing. Well, the 'ping' did not reach me this time since you did not sign your post. The first part (@W.carter:) was correct, but it has to be used together with the four ~~~~ at the end. It's the combo that makes it work. When you have been here a while, you will understand why it is so complicated. I will not bore you with the reasons right now. :) I have your page on my watchlist right now since I'm helping you and saw your answer anyway. Best, w.carter-Talk 11:22, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
Baantjern
[edit]Hi, InovaThor! I'm curious to why you called your article Baantjern - the name of the article on Norwgian Wikipedia is Båntjern. Why the different spelling? I want to know the answer to this mystery Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 15:14, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
@Finnusertop: Hi, Finnusertop. I designed the page with English speaking tourists in mind, and chose not to use «å» as it is not in their alphabet. In Norwegian a double “a” is pronounced the same way as a “å”, so I opted for that without giving it much though. I see now though, that it would be less confusing if I just used a single “a”. Would you recommend I change it?
- (I formatted the post and I'm repeating the 'ping' so that it will reach @Finnusertop:. w.carter-Talk 11:24, 16 October 2015 (UTC) )
- Hello again, InovaThor! Wikipedia uses the common, most recognizable name in English for a topic. For foreign language names this can sometimes be tricky to determine - and it's great that you have given it some thought. Do other English-language sources (travel guides, maps, news stories etc.) spell Båntjern, Baantjern or Bantjern? This is what one should ask. Well, it looks like someone has already moved the page under the title "Båntjern", maybe they know best. But with English speaking tourist in mind, I'm happy to tell you that searching for (or clicking these links) Bantjern or Baantjern go to your article as well, making it easy to find. This is because they were made redirects to your article. This is very useful for alternative spellings, and isn't it great! Finnusertop (talk | guestbook | contribs) 13:01, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
