Unsourced birth dates
[edit]Hello. I wanted to explain why I reverted your edit to Oteil Burbridge. The problem was that you added unsourced biographical information to a biographies of a living person. Birth dates are often considered private, and there are many sites on the internet that purport to reveal them. Most of them are not what we would consider reliable sources, such as user-generated content (for example, the IMDb), self-published blogs and fan sites, and primary sources (for example, government databases). The best thing to do is stick to interviews in reputable magazines and newspapers. That means it's difficult to find this information, but it's better to not have it in the article than to have it unsourced or cited to unreliable websites. You corrected an article because I had put an unsourced birth date. I think I actually did it twice, I’ll go back and remove it. I did them before reading your note to me. I’m an idiot.
My question is, if I have a reliable source (interview, personal website, etc), how exactly do I give the source? That is to say, I obviously never see footnotes next to birthdays, so where/how do I properly provide said source?
I’m not asking without looking on my own. My stupid brain just can’t find definitively how to provide a good source.
Help? Sorry to be such a newb. Indiecred (talk) 05:51, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
