Regarding Editing other editor's comments
[edit]On talkpages, it's best to not edit other editors' comments in order to make them gender neutral. On rare occasions, you may fix some typos, but it's best to leave word choice as is :) The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 14:57, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- ..........Well I had a choice to confront him, or to change his comments so maybe he could see his mistakes instead actually being mean to him......!-_-100110100 19:28, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- Still.....the validity of political correctness is subjective. Some people feel gender neutral language is correct, others feel it is unnatural. I don't think most people make a concious decision about the gender of their language. Personally, I prefer a gender neutral language, but you have to respect the fact that other people don't. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 20:45, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- It's not subjective, because feminist theory states that patriacharial language keeps females subordinate.100110100 00:44, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- It's not about whether or not you are right...it's the fact it's their choice of what to write, and that the only thing which can really be removed from conversations are personal attacks. Gender neutral language cannot be removed or added to someone else's comments, even slurs and swears are almost never removed!
- With your own comments, it's best to strike out your comments with <s> and </s> instead of removing them.
- Anyway, cheers, The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 01:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]Wow! Thanks for cleaning up IPA! That helps! The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 15:44, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

List of ethnic slurs/ mike33 nomination
[edit]Mike, I am disappointed by the fact that you didn't even try to settle your qualms about the article on its talkpage. Filing a deletion request only detracts time and attention that could have been spent working on the article itself. Would it be possible for you to outline your ideas on the article's talkpage? I would be willing to close the AfD afterward. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 23:03, 13 August 2006 (UTC) Brother, yes I did not use AFD correctly. I wanted a quick clean, sometimes it happens in AFD. nothing has happened in this AFD. nothoing will happen with the list (already 220kb). it gets quoted and and only 30per cent is sourced. It re-creates ethnitity to include ethnic who no sociologist or anthropologist has consided before. I wanted it cleaning. i will clean but now there will be revert war. why? I didn't want this to happen. Mike33 08:39, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Deja vu all over again
[edit]It's baaaaack! Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of famous members of Mensa (2nd nomination) ... your 2¢ would be appreciated. --Dennette 16:02, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Dennette. I just wanted to drop by and thank you for the heads-up on the AFD, but let you know that on wikipedia it is frowned upon somewhat to alert other users about AFDs, RFAs, etc. It makes it seem like you are trying to stuff the ballot (even if that obviously isn't the case, like now). I'm alerting you because I'm worried that you'll get a rather nasty slap on the wrist by someone if you tell the wrong person about a consensus (which has happened a couple of times here :-S ). Anyway, salaam and cheers, The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 00:44, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, but your warning came a Little Too Late ... Ptkfgs already slapped me, even though I was only contacting people who had already contibuted to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of geniuses and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Mensa International members. OTOH, I don't think that No Canvassing prohibits me from mentioning things like just having made a contibution to the Discussion page for Portal:Islam/Did_you_know on my own User Talk page, right? --Dennette 01:56, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
- Acutally, most people put their contribs on their userpage, so you can proudly display your portal and article contribs there.
- OK....now onto spamming. The thing about XfDs (AfDs, CfDs, MfDs, etc.) is that they are a consideration to obliterate a person's work. It's a huge thing that XfD "voters" often overlook. If you are a main contributor to that particular article, you may lose a decent amount of edits and contribs which show evidence of involvement.
- Then, since it is such a big deal, often the deleter or the editor of the page in question will rush to experts, friends, or afficianados of the topic, and people who believe the topic is cruft. Then, the AfD is corrupted by people who don't really care about the topic, they just want to exercise some sort of guideline or philosophy they run by. A lot of them are "sheep votes" which are often single-word "delete" or "keep" statements, or "per Mrs. so-and-so" ones (which is basically the same thing). So a perfectly fine XfD is corrupted by a few messages. This is why when someone sees some sort of spam about AfDs, they ring the firebell, because there is almost always some sort of angle the spammer is coming at. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 01:58, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- P.S. I don't doubt that you had good intentions, I'm just trying to explain why others may think otherwise :) The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 02:00, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Your note
[edit]Hi Slim. I've seen you around here, and I know you've dealt with your share of disputes, so perhaps you can help with mine. I'm in a bit of a dispute over language (FWIW it's here). Would it be in bad taste to request a third opinion on the Language reference desk? I know spamming, etc., is discouraged, but putting up a request on WP:3O always takes a long time and usually doesn't work to well. In your experience, what is the best way to do this? The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 01:36, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hi ikiroid, it would be fine for you to request a third opinion on the language reference desk, and wouldn't be regarded at all as spamming. :-) SlimVirgin (talk) 01:51, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Although I can't help regularly, I made a few suggestions for the section "Did you know?" at Portal:Language/Did you know/Nominate. If you agree, I can update that part of the portal. Ι have created and I am looking after the Portal:Language of the greek wikipedia (under the username "Valentin"). It is a good idea to try to find someone to help regularly with this portal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Linguistics. --Michkalas 16:35, 30 August 2006 (UTC) [Better to answer to the talkpage of the portal and let me know by leaving a message to my talkpage]

Infobox Writing system reply (eom)
[edit]Hello again, CB! Remember {{Infobox Writing system}}? I was wondering if it would be possible to make only the first word under the "Type" variable count. For example, if I write
|type=[[Logographic]] with syllabic elements
can the color for "Logographic" only show up, instead of it being white? I've been doing some work with templates but I can't handle this advanced stuff like you can. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 19:45, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Ikiroid. In this case what you are trying to do actually isn't possible directly. Wikipedia doesn't have any functionality for isolating portions of a string with the exception of a few tricks for wikilinks only (e.g. [[Shire (Middle-earth)|]] knows to ignore the parenthetical and just shows Shire). You could simulate something like this by having a 'type' parameter and a 'type description' which is displayed right after it. So, in this case, type=Logographic and typedesc=with syllabic elements. Alternatively, if there are only going to be a few variations like this it could be added to the #switch so 'Logographic with syllabic elements' would be a recognized text for producing the red color. I'll implement that for now, but if there are going to be alot of variations then the 'type and typedesc' method might be better. --CBD 08:17, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- CB, I like your idea for an optional "type description" parameter. I was thinking of calling it "typedesc." I tried to add it in, but I didn't do it because A) It was your idea, so you should get credit, and B) I didn't know where to add {{{typedesc}}} in the code so it would be transcluded next to {{{type}}} without disrupting the color code. Do you think you could add in a "typedesc" parameter, just like how you described it above? The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 02:21, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Ikiroid. I made an update for the 'typedesc' parameter. Since we only want to use it for display we can bypass the color code entirely and only include it on the line where the type is actually displayed. --CBD 09:46, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- I just used it in Cuniform, it works great! Thank you! I'll try adding it to other Writing systems with exceptions. By the way, I put my two cents in into the ipa-0 DRV. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 14:22, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
Barnstar
[edit]thanks for the Barnstar :-). Happy to have my first here. Thank you for inviting me to WP writing systems. I don't know whether I should join the project and what the use of this would be. And how "join" at the end is defined. But WP is likely to get more edits from me with respect to writing systems. Maybe I put my name on the project page, yes. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 03:20, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- In fairness, Tobias has caused some trouble and controversy with his contributions on ISO 15924 particularly in relation to "mini-stubs" of low quality. See his talk page and the talk page of ISO 15924. Evertype 07:33, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
- I know, but he has really helped out the Writing Systems articles. He's helped a lot at repairing and expanding things. I'm staying out of the other conflicts there, those are between him and some other wikipedians. I won't protest or endorse any blocks or anything unless I become involved, because I don't know enough about the whole thing. Apparently, this conflict goes back a few months. Yes my bot can do this.I'll tag the talk pages but I need you to give me every categoy you want tagged including every subcat. please post them to User:Betacommand/WikiProject Writing systems. I will then create a list from those Categories of pages to tag. When i complete the list, you will need to look it over and remove any pages that should not get tagged. Betacommand (talk • contribs • Bot) 00:09, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
- I've added a lot of info to the page, but I'm not finished. Many of these articles overlap in the categories, and they exist in multiple ones. Will this be a problem? I'm hesitant to add more cats until I know. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 01:25, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

The International Jew
[edit]I proposed deletion of this article, as the information within it already exists within The Dearborn Independent. If you agree with the deletion, we can quickly delete it as a speedy deletion. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 23:54, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Dear Mysterious Wikipedian,
- The Dearborn Independent is defunct.
- But The International Jew is alive and well, and in circulation--as it is currently distributed by active anti-Semites.
- As you seem to be fluent in Russian--can you tell me what library, or where in Russia--one could get to see the original 1903 Znamya (newspaper)?
- Yours truly, Ludvikus 00:34, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- As you seem to be fluent in Russian--can you tell me what library, or where in Russia--one could get to see the original 1903 Znamya (newspaper)?
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I now see your point. I read this article, as well as the other one, and I now see they are different.
As a second note, I know very little Russian, though I am fascinated with its grammar, as well as its alphabet. I wish I could be of more help there.
We should remove the period in the name, though. First we'll need to delete the redirect The International Jew and then recreate the article there. Or, we could just move all of the text there, if you don't mind the history being deleted. What do you want to do? The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 00:39, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
- hangon!!! I'm here, in the "United States" where this "bood" was written.
- We have an extremely tolerant Freedom of the Press Constitutional right to publishing even this kind of "garbage."
- By your argument, we should not have an article on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion because we already have an article on Znamya and The Morning Post.
- Do you understand me? These so-called Protocols had ben actually published in the two above-mentioned articles.
- Thanks for the opportunity of engaging in a discussion. ---Ludvikus 00:51, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit]I am not a writing system. -- Evertype·✆ 22:46, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
But you've spent a large amount of your life dedicated to Writing systems. Don't you think that people such as Ben Franklin, Sam Pollard, and yourself deserve to be included in the scope of the project? The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 22:50, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Ben Franklin didn't invent a writing system. He dabbled with orthography reform for English. Is it necessary to invite more attention to the article about me at this time? I'd advise tagging Sequoyah and similar articles and deciding on "importance" criteria first. And then getting those shipshape. Just a thought. Leave the tag if you wish. -- Evertype·✆ 22:54, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, you notability lies in your knowledge of the written word in all shapes and forms, which I guess conforms to the project. It only takes about a minute and a half to rate an article and add a tag. Plus, the tag would probably attract positive attention, since those who are interested in the topic are cleaning up the article. I'll go ahead and tag other articles like Sequoyah, though. The reason I tagged yours was because I was visting your userpage and I ended up at your biography. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 23:25, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hey there, thanks so much for my welcome :) I've used Wikipedia a lot for research on my kiddies school projects and just couldn't imagine being without it now. I only recently registered and am still trying to find my feet. I thought welcoming new people would be one of the more simple things to do without doing any harm till I'm a bit more clued up, after all there is nothing nicer than being welcomed. I welcomed quite a few new users yesterday but with a standard Wikipedia welcome that I just copied and pasted. I must say yours was much nicer as it had a personal element to it. I noticed that new users register at a high speed, I couldn't keep up! :) Have a great day.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Louisemil (talk • contribs) .

How is the cleanup on the article Paramount Canada's Wonderland going? Looks pretty good to me. Does it look done to you? RJFJR 13:42, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hey RJFJR, you left a message on my talkpage regarding CT things, specifically the state of the article Paramount Canada's Wonderland. Well, I haven't done much to the article (these are my changes), specifically because I couldn't find much wrong with it (where is the writing too "formal"?) and because I don't know much about the park. Should I leave a message on the article's talkpage requesting comments about general cleanup? I'm still willing to work on it, I just don't want to fix the parts that aren't broken. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 19:11, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
- Actually it looks OK to me. I'd be willing to close the project unless someone (i.e. you) see more that needs doing. RJFJR 20:10, 2 October 2006 (UTC)
- There's really no harm in keeping the thing going. I put up a request for further comment on the article's CT page, I'll watch for reaction, etc. BTW, I'm happy to take up another article, especially one about linguistics.
