Welcome!
[edit]I hope you like this place — I sure do — and want to stay. Before getting too in-depth, please read about the simplified ruleset. If you need help on how to title new articles check out the naming conventions, and for help on formatting the pages visit the manual of style. If you need help look at Wikipedia:Help and the FAQ , plus if you can't find your answer there, check the Village Pump (for Wikipedia related questions) or the Reference Desk (for general questions)! There's still more help at the Tutorial and Policy Library. Plus, don't forget to visit the Community Portal. And if you have any more questions after that, feel free to post them on my user talk page.
Additional tips
[edit]Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!
- If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
- You can sign your name using three tildes (~). If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
- If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the articles for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
- If you believe something you added or created has been unfairly treated, talk to the user or follow the steps in resolving disputes
- If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
- If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.
Happy Wiki-ing.

How can you say that about Homer Football. We are the Section 3 champions in New York state so we are definatley one of the ten best football teams for a class b sized school. —the preceding unsigned comment is by 72.226.145.68 (talk • contribs)
- Dear User:72.226.145.68 (a.k.a. User:Jeremie03). You are vandalising. An article for Homer Football is seen as non-notable, and removing the AfD tags is seen as even worse vandalism (especially 4 times)[1][2][3][4]. Vandalising the AfD page itself, is also vandalism.[5] Please refer to Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not especially the section on Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. Your article on Shady containing "===Person living in Homer, New York.===" is also spam.[6] The addition of oversized links to your articles, is also seen as spam. [7][8] If you still feel my actions are incorrect, then please let an Admin know, so they can investigate (and I will then add even more lnks, I've just got tired). Dear Ian,
I appreciate that you are a keen community Wikipedia community member and wish to remove enteries which you think damage the site however be careful to not over police.
I see you have added a an AfD tag to the site televisionfreedom.com
May I please ask why this was done? as this site is currently advertised on the London Underground and does fall under the category 'not notable'.
If you beleive the entry needs expanding this is a different matter.
Regards and keep up the good work. —the preceding unsigned comment is by 81.153.43.139 (talk • contribs)
- Thank you for your comments. I tagged this article for a community vote of deletion as I feel it is website spam. Also all other parties who have participated in the vote so far have opted delete, which shows the community also feel it should be removed. I respect that you may feel it is worthwhile, but Google dosen't seem to think so, and I am unable to find a link to the website on the first few pages, dispite talk on other sites. I feel it is not notable, and does not have the status to be included within an encyclopedia. The key quote you mentioned was currently advertised on the London Underground; anyone can do that with the relevent resources, but please refer to What WP is not - WP is not a propaganda Machine. And please remember WP is an encyclopedia dispite that all can contribute. Please do not hesitate to contact me. (And also note I ask all comments are signed with ~~~~) Ian 13 18:32, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
Dear Ian,
Thanks for your response. I realise that an encyclopedia does not usually include business names and that this site is not not meant to be a propoganda machine, but then again there seems to be massive inconsistency with regards to this issue.
For example, why is a company like Ryan Air on the site along with hundreds of others? Purely because it is well-known owing to its massive resources and advertising campaigns ( including on the London Underground);-)
The fact that something is not listed on Google is also a matter of financial resources, clever meta-tags, back-linking to other sites etc and does not in and of itself justify an entry.
I am certainly not blaming you for this and I realise your concerns are shared by others, but if you dlete sites like this you would presumambly need to delete virtually every business entry. --81.153.43.139 18:56, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- I fully understand your viewpoint. In the end it is just what the community feels is relevent, and a site with a good google place and many links is generally considered that. Personally I would view that a expancive website (I am not discrediting yours, however I expect a good 30 pages for a site with full article). POV also needs to be taken into account, and although the article is well writen, it would possibily be more suitated to a section in an article about telecommunication servies. I have been in your position myself, and it is not an easy one. I would consider in a year or six months time returning creating a full article (bit more contentful and insightful), or finding a place in another suitable article (if the current is deleted). I myself only act to highlight possible articles to the community, so they can judge. I also see how it is unfair that some articles are kept and others dropped, but I would say there is a level of content expected (esp. for websites) that your article does not quite meet. A more suited title like 'Television Freedom' may seem less like an advertising plot. Please do not take any of the points I have highlighted personally. Ian 13 19:16, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- Also please consider the huge levels of spam and vandalism WP recieves. It is very hard to consider every case fully before deciding what to do. (Put forth block request, revert any edits, put for speedy delete, AfD ect.) so I try as much as possible to judge correctly, the problem is that everyone sees the world differently too. Ian 13 19:20, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
Dear Ian,
I take your comments on board and I thank you for taking the time to reply in a well-balanced manner. The site is not actually mine, but this is besides the point.
Carry on the polcing but don't get addicted. :-)

- Thank you for your comments, and sorry that I presumed you were connected with the site. I am already addicted to MOO incase you were wondering. ;) Ian 13 19:53, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
- I also wish to add, a little late, that WP:CORP is good source of what companies are acceptable. It is not an official policy yet, but it outlines the current aspects. Ian 13 18:58, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

Multiple AFDs
[edit]Ian, I am concerned with the number of afd's you brought in the past few minutes. For one, it doesn't seem that you completed the afd process...which involves placing {{subst:afd2|text=}} on the article's afd page and adding it to that day's afd page. I found that because I checked the AFD page for Angry Sun, which had been afd'd before and was redirected to a mario article. An anon changed the redirect to the current crappy article, so I believe that the best course would have been to revert the changes back to the redirect.
I would go ahead and do this for you (at least on Angry Sun, I didnt look at the others...but suspect they could also be redirected to the same article), but I don't want to interfere and remove afd tags if you *really* want to bring another afd.
Please respond here or on my talk page and let me know. --Syrthiss 18:11, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I am dealing with rather a lot, all done by the same user. I am rather new, so wasn't sure how to go about this process, so you are most welcome to change some if you feel nessarry. Ian 13 18:14, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, let me take a look. Heh my connection to wikipedia is a little slow, so it may take me a few mins :) --Syrthiss 18:15, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
- The idea was to create one AfD vote page for all of the nominated articles, however I am not sure how effectively this has worked. And yes, it is rather slow at the moment. Ian 13 18:18, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I see the afd page now. I'm still investigating (and unblanking the anon's talk page) so I'll either just comment on the big afd page (and add it to the afd log for today) or re-set the redirects if enough of them were pointing the same place. Either case I'll let you know here. :) --Syrthiss 18:29, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks, and btw I added to todays log when I finished making all the AfDs. Ian 13 18:30, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Japanese redirects
[edit]I have been looking through the information at Wikipedia:Redirect and can find no explicit reason to take action with regard to the list of redirects recently created by 219.110.42.74. If you wish to have them removed, you may list the redirects at Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion and see how the community views them. As these redirects may be viewed a equivalent to redirecting European city names from the locally used name to the English equivalent (i.e. Firenze → Florence or Wien → Vienna), I am unsure of how such nominations would be received. --Allen3 talk 13:03, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

Re: Category:Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi
[edit]Why did you list this article on Speedy Deletions? It does not fulfill WP:CSD. The category serves its purpose in grouping 4 related articles together. What's the problem? --Aleron235 22:19, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
Oh dear, the name gave me a good laugh as well first, but at the end of the day, it's pretty much a valid category. Enochlau 00:25, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- Wowa, okay sorry, I was getting a little tired, and when I looked there was only one article. Personally I would prefer a catagory a little higher up (like it to go in Amine), but okay, you probably know best, and sorry! Ian13 09:57, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Greetings from Paris
[edit]Ian13,
Thanks for the welcome but - LOL! - I had just changed my name. I only had a short history of editing so found it easier to re-register. Still, I am relatively new to Wiki, so the reminder was useful - besides, I totally share your "be bold" stance and have been "sorting through" how best to apply it. It takes a bit of experience, obviously. Pleased to meet you : )
Thanks again, and take care,
ThePromenader 00:43, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- No problem, I hope you enjoy editing here at WP, and enjoy your new account :) Fell free to contact me should you need assistance in anything. Ian13 09:57, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm touched that you thought to check up on me - thanks. I had a bit of a rough spot there, but all is better now and things are moving forward at a more regular pace : ) I'd love to have a hand in my doings if you have the time, but if the things I'm working on aren't your specialty your NPOV on the "work in progress" (readablility, etc) would be much appreciated for sure.
Thanks a mil, and take care!

American Smokeless removal
[edit]I copy this over from my User page where this was placed at the top and the user listed in current projects that I was "preventing people from knowing about the Ubie". They even slipped an advert at the bottom of their great statement. Ian13 10:17, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
In American Smokeless You say "Delete. This blatent advertizing" You are mistaking a PSA for an ad. Blatent Advertizing is what several wikipedians are doing to Volcano Vaporizer and it's manufacturer. They omit all other info that might get people to the Ubie (which costs $10) --So cheap we make nothing on google and yahoo ads!
The volcano on the other hand costs $500-700. I think it's great but it's not a cure for "smoking" --it's a top of the line item.
Are you aware that wiki is promoting the most expencive vaporizer on the market and selectivly omitting all others from mention?
Do you have any data to estemate how many peopl that will kill? It is amazingly irresponsible of you to say that Volcano Vaporizer Deserves a page but the Ubie Vaporizer Or AmeicanSmokeless.Com Does not. You will incurr bad karma on this.
Yes, at $10, we are the leading vaporizer company worldwide (in numbers served) and get all this crap from unimformed sysops..
Also. Some of your compatriates keep deleting this from smoking cigatetts and vaporizers! http://www.eclipsescience.com/results/default.html CHECK GRAPH AT BOTTOM HERE-> http://www.eclipsescience.com/results/dermal_tumor_promotion.html
There is no excuse for this bahavior. Smoking kills 3000 people per DAY in North American Alone. 95% chould be saved but not with a $500 entery cost.. You helped omit information about the most cost effective vaporizer and the healthiest cigarette on the market. I hope you can repare what you so cavalearly break.
Not everyone has the time to become a wiki hack. That is why the system does'nt work. It's a pain in the ass to constantly fight those people who make it their lives.
I hope wikipedians will do a little research next time instead of just giving themselves awards and making uninformed snap hypocritical judgements about products intended to save lives.
Why tell them about the first condomn for a cigarette?" What is th epurpose for wikipedia to exist? To inform. How can you do that when you exclude pertinant information?
Carefull about bad karma. God is.

iPod hacks - Thanks
[edit]20051207, DJ Vollkasko here, thanks for the help on fixing up iPod hacks. Re my question "How can I get iPod_Accessories to point to that category", there is a (sub-)category called iPod_Accessories that would be good to link to from the iPod hacks page. Know what I mean? (oh, and of course as it is smart to have iPod hacks as a page, the same goes for iPod accessories, would make a nice page, too, and allow for deletion of several independent pages that could all be summed up on one... Or at least referred from there...) —the preceding unsigned comment is by 212.149.48.43 (talk • contribs)
- Traditionally, it is instated as a catagory for that page, but I will take a look, and link to the catagory if it seems worthwhile. And yes, a merge of all accessories to one article would be good, but I would consider waiting for the outcome of the AfD Firebug started, and if it is kept, it is good evidence that the community would also approve of a all-in-one Accessories article. Thanks, and do not hesitate to contact me! Ian13 17:13, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

- Oh dear. Sorry! Is there any known solution for this bug? Ian13 19:30, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- Not that I know of. You could try contacting the author of it to check the latest status. There was some talk of extending rollback to some non-admins but that would require a software change in Mediawiki and developers are pretty slow to implement changes. -- Curps 19:52, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, I presume rollback is a feature normally available to admins only then. Okay, I will look into it. I better stop using the function though, if it means I go around destroying pages. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Ian13 19:54, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- It's available to admins in the standard Mediawiki software as a "rollback" link. I think it would be a good idea to extend that to registered users in good standing who would use it responsibly, but who knows if and when that will ever be implemented. -- Curps 20:06, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
- I managed to find a fix for it, so thanks for bringing it to my attention, so I could stop using it and find a cure. Color Usability
[edit]You might want to review Wikipedia:WikiProject Usability with respect to color combinations that are legible to older Internet users. The reality is that as we get older, it becomes more dificult to see text when it is light text color on a dark color background. Userboxes
[edit]Hi Ian-
I've decided (for no real reason) to start my own little userbox mini-project, and am currently in the process of creating a category and userbox for each college of University of Oxford. 4 down... just 28 to go! I split the userbox locations page into grouping by continent earlier - but there are LOADS of countries missing there so that could take a while. I also moved the sport boxes off the main page and into their own sub-page. Let me know if you need any specific help! File:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano 13:17, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- Hi again - I noticed you "fixed formatting" on the userbox location pages such as Wikipedia:Userboxes/Location/Europe. Do you not think related user boxes should be grouped together in some way - that was my thinking for producing the table in that format. For example, there are four boxes related to Spain, but at first glance they are completely independent of each other. Any solution? File:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano 10:24, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
- I understand what you mean. The problem is I'm not really sure. There arn't enough for another catagory, yet I don't know of an effective way to group on the page besides maybe a Spanish section, which would seem altogether odd. The way it was grouped before didn't do my browser any good, and messed it all up abit, but I'll take another look. Thanks. Ian13ID:540053 10:33, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
Wikiproject Userboxes
[edit]I was hoping somebody would make start that! I'm thinking of becoming a member.
Thanks, Lee S. Svoboda 22:20, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- Please do. There are no requirments or activness levels - every little helps. One box made or added to the page, or even just changing one users userpage to reflect the new prefixs added to (some) userboxes, is less wok for everyone else. Really, please do join in! :) Ian13ID:540053 22:23, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Userbox page edit?
[edit]Hi--I've just noticed your revision of my page. It appears to be only a structural change as the appearance is the same.....I am a newbie and was hoping you could explain this a bit more. I have been victimized by vandals recently and I just want to be clear as to what was done and why. Since it looks the same I am just a bit confused. Thank you for your time and consideration. - Right, I am the founder, and acting on behalf of Wikipedia:WikiProject Userboxes. It is only a structural change, and the appearance should be the same. We are currently working towards giving all userboxes the standard prefix of "User", making them easier to find and place. Your page as obviously been edited as part of transfering all userpages to the new prefix, so the old template can be removed and deleted. You are most welcome to revert what edits have taken place, however you will most likely shortly find that the userbox will vanish from your page as the template is deleted, and we therefore have updated the page for you to prevent you losing boxes when this happens. I hope this makes things clearer. Ian13ID:540053 18:01, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
Thank yo ufor the info. I have been reading up on this and it now all makes sense. I appreciate your explaination and wish you luck with your project. I would help---but---I don't think I have the skills yet. Best wishes for a prosperous new year. Braaad 18:07, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
No links to Userbox Wikipedia
[edit]As the person who re-linked most of those, I would like to point out that there are two that are still on the list. Both seem to use subpages for the userboxes. Should I just not sweat it, or would you please tell me how to re-link those?

- Thanks for all your work on that btw, I know form doing a batch myself how tedious and boring it can be, your efforts are great! I looked at this, however on the subpages they use for babel, they have been updated, I am not sure why the wiki still shows them up, but it seems they don't use them, so I would just do your best to ignore them ;) Ian13ID:540053
- I was having the same trouble, be sure to check for LINKS to the templates themselves, I found some in the headers of the computer ub page. --Grand Edgemaster Talk 23:24, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
