How to make a tag.
[edit]How do I make a double brace tag such as inuse and is there a list of already existing ones?
- That's called a template. If you wanted to make blah, then you would go to template:blah and put the content there. →Raul654 21:38, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)
- Oh, and yes, there is a BIIIIIG list somewhere but I can't remember where it is off the top of my head. →Raul654 21:39, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)
- You're probably thinking either of Wikipedia:All pages in the MediaWiki and Template namespace or Wikipedia:Template messages/All. --David Iberri | Talk 22:04, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)

JPG Help
[edit]I can't seem to make thumbnail sized. I've uploaded it as a 2KB file but it still comes out BIG. Feel free to edit or explain so that I can edit. Also how can I reference that image without displaying it. I used "nowiki" for that image reference in this message but that requires some helpful soul to type it out rather than clicking on it. Thanks, User talk:Hydnjo
- (From Hydnjo): Experimenting around it seems that my original upload needs a "syop" to delete. Sorry about that, I'll be more careful in the future. Would a "syop" please help. Delete everything if you wish and I'll start over. Thanks Hydnjo 02:55, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC) User talk:Hydnjo
- Firstly, you can display a reference to an image by including a colon at the beginning of the wiki-brackets, like this: :Image:Hydnjo.JPG , which displays this: Image:Hydnjo.JPG. Secondly, it's okay to upload big (within reason), because you can use the Wikipedia:Extended image syntax to display a smaller version, but still have the large version available for users who want to see more detail. Thirdly, you can modify an uploaded image by uploading a modified copy with exactly the same file name -- you will be given the option to overwrite the original image. See also Wikipedia:Picture tutorial for more info and links. Best of luck to you! Catherine\talk 06:54, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for JPG help
[edit]Hello Catherine and thank you for your fast response to my plea for help.
- The colon after "[[" is exactly what I was looking for.
- My confusion about reloading an image may be the result of the way my browser (Safari) works. I had reloaded Image:Hydnjo.JPG several times (take a peek at that page's history) but the initial BIG image kept showing up no matter which revision I called up. I tried logging out and into WP and emptying Safari's cache but to no avail. But,when I went back there after reading your response this morning the image was thumbnail size (how did you do that)! So today (as an experiment) I replaced that image with it's horizontal reverse (Heidi-left, Joe-right). Same thing happened (twice); the old image kept showing up. In desperation I restarted my computer and then all was fine. Question - does WP have a time delay when images are replaced or is my iMac browser ignoring my request to empty it's cache?
- Thanks for the "Picture tutorial" link - more stuff to learn.
- Your User and Talk pages will keep me up way past my bedtime tonight.
- Is your self-reference (I had to look it up in WP) an MBTI category?
- Without asking your permission, I ripped off your signature format. Thanks again, Hydnjo\talk 23:25, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- No problem, Joe, we're glad to help. We all had to find our way through the thicket of help and policy pages at some point -- knowing you'll do the same for somebody else down the road is all the thanks we need.
- The caching problem is probably on our end. Because the vast majority of our users are readers rather than editors, and every reader can be served the same page every time until the page changes, we lighten the load on our servers by using a layer of "Squid servers". The page request goes first to the Squid, which, if nothing has changed since the last cache, sends a cached copy of page to readers -- that is, non-logged in users -- without touching the main databases. When you're logged in, it's not supposed to send you a cached page, but sometimes it does, especially if there's a lot of traffic at the moment, or a lot of changes have been made to a page within a short time.
- In addition, if the Squids pass on the request to the main servers, there's a "round robin DNS" system which finds the machine with the lightest load at that millisecond, and sends your request there. MOST of the time, this is totally transparent, and MOST of the time, all of the physical servers are exactly in synch. When you run into a caching issue, though, it may be that traffic is high and either the Squids or the database servers are slightly behind in updating, or are serving a cached page instead of the latest update. It never takes long to catch up, and usually a user would never notice, but it is frustrating when you are trying to check that an improvement you made looks the way you want it to. (It's all very complicated, and I applaud our volunteer developers for making it work as well as it does!)
- Yes, the INFP is one of the MBTI categories -- only 1.5% of the population out there, or something. :) (Hope you enjoyed your stroll through my user pages...) And no worries on the signature, I borrowed it from Solitude, and posted the code for it on my page to make it easy to borrow. Please feel free to ask if there's anything else I can do to help. Hello again Catherine
- Thanks for the server tutorial. I suspected as much after a few more experiments; I seemed to have no control over the timing of the new upload actually showing up. I was confused at first because of a few coincidental occurrences. Your explanation fits my experiences.
- I noted your acknowledgement to Solitude after sending my comments. Thanks anyway.
- Also, there are about three times more of you INFPs out there than you think according to an excellent reference resource. Hydnjo\talk 00:16, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Heroic Admins (or whomever)
[edit]Hi Jimbo,
- I'm fairly new around here and my wife is already complaining about your project. As I poke around and try to feel the edges, I am utterly impressed with the way I have been welcomed and helped (a beautiful personal touch) and, in particular, the devotion of the Admins (or Syops) that are so amazingly vigilant at identifying, reverting, and blocking those individuals who feel a need to soil anything that is unsoiled or helpful.
- I hope to become more of a contributing member of this community (wife permitting) as I feel more comfortable with all of the "customaries".
- My congratulations for such an wonderful project and contribution to our world.

You're welcome
[edit]Hydnjo - I saw your message on Jimbo's talk page, and (I'm going to be a bit impertinent here) speaking for the rest of the admins, I'd like to say you're welcome. Also, if you have any questions, feel free to ask in private on my talk page, or on the help desk. →Raul654 02:23, Dec 12, 2004 (UTC)

Tip about thumbnails
[edit]Hi, I noticed you were experimenting with different sized versions of your photo. It appears that the last version of your photo was manually resized to be thumbnail sized.
If you haven't tried it out yet, there is a thumbnail feature for JPEGs that allows you to keep a large picture linked to a smaller preview version that shows up on the page when you first view it.
For example, the example thumbnail to the right links to a larger version of a photo of my wife and I on vacation.
If you're really curious, there is a picture tutorial with a mind-boggling number of options on this page, and another with fewer choices on this page.
Cheers,
— DV 03:58, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I'm new and old (how's that for an oximoron) and I appreciate all the help that I'm getting from you folks. The he links that you provided were especially helpful. I hope that at some future time I'll be able to do the same for another newbie. Hydnjo\talk 04:56, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
loading image and cache problem
[edit]I saw above your problem with reloading image and seeing the old version, you can work around this by forcing a reload in your browser (shift reload for safari I think) phe 05:07, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
No - Not That
[edit]phe : I reloaded an upside-down copy (see Image:Hydnjo.JPG) but it still shows the earlier (right-side-up) image even after doing your reload suggestion. I even restarted my computer which closes all apps and restarts them. Something strange here - I'll let you know if I ever figure it out.
- Well look at that, in the time that it took to type this message to you, the image flipped upside-down. Strange - some kind of time delay to work through the system (I think).
- I'm going to make it right-side-up now. Hydnjo\talk 05:51, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Ignore the above. The image is either right-side-up or upside-down at some whim that I don't about yet. I'll let you know when I find out. Hydnjo\talk 06:02, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Help desk
[edit]No problem. I just saw your question on Special:Recent changes; if I hadn't, somebody else would have answered. Keep up the good work. Meelar (talk) 02:37, Dec 18, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks again
You're fast with Wikipedia:Help desk. I appreciate it but I don't know how you do it. So, are you watching us or what? I've tried watching "Recent changes" so I know that's not how we get flagged, it's just too damn cluttered. An interested newcomer:hydnjo talk 03:50, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)
