Finally found one. Question-does the JTWC go under NOAA or is it non-public domain? Because they have a track map for typhoons and a track map for tropical storms/tropical depressions.Mitchazenia V5.0 22:15, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"track map for typhoons and a track map for tropical storms/tropical depressions"- I don't mean induvidual track maps. I meant: [1].Mitchazenia V5.0 01:35, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #6

[edit]

Number 6, November 5, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. The WikiProject has its own IRC channel.

"THIS IS THE LAST PUBLIC ADVISORY ISSUED ON THIS USER UNLESS REGENERATION OCCURS"

Storm of the month

Xangsane to the east of the Philippines
Xangsane to the east of the Philippines

Typhoon Xangsane, known as Typhoon Milenyo in the Philippines was a destructive typhoon that affected the Philippines and Indochina. The storm caused severe flooding and landslides in the regions it affected and was responsible for at least 279 deaths and $747 million (USD) in damage, mostly in the Philippines and Vietnam. Xangsane formed to the east of the Philippines and rapidly intensified, striking Samar Island as a Category 4 typhoon. It weakened over the Philippines, but again reached Category 4 strength in the South China Sea. After its landfall in Vietnam, the typhoon dissipated, with its remnant crossing Indochina and entering the Bay of Bengal.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • Hurricane Isaac, which formed in September, hit Newfoundland with minimal effects on October 2. It was the only Atlantic storm in October.
  • One hurricane, Hurricane Paul, formed in the eastern Pacific and hit Mexico. There were also two tropical storms, Norman and Olivia, and two tropical depressions in the basin.
  • In addition to Typhoon Xangsane, two further typhoons and two tropical storms developed in the west Pacific. Typhoon Soulik and Tropical Storms Bebinca and Rumbia both stayed clear of land, whilst Typhoon Cimaron hit the Philippines killing at least 19 people there, before it dissipated in the South China Sea.
  • The North Indian Ocean saw one storm, Cyclonic Storm Ogni form in the Bay of Bengal.
  • The 2006-2007 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season got underway, with Tropical Cyclone Xavier forming to the west of Fiji. There were two further tropical depressions in the South Pacific and a tropical disturbance in the South Indian Ocean.

The October Member of the Month is Coredesat. Coredesat joined the WikiProject in March and has contributed to many diverse areas within the project. He has written two featured articles on Atlantic storms and a number of good articles on current typhoons. However, the article he is most proud of is a disambiguation page, a sorely neglected portion of the project.

Tropical cyclone scales

The various agencies which report on tropical cyclones use a variety of different scales to measure the storms strength. The most familiar of these is the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and this is the de facto standard in the project and should be used everywhere. However, as it is only official in the Atlantic and East Pacific, other local scales should be used when discussing storms in other regions and given primacy over the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The Saffir-Simpson scale is based on 1-minute averages, but other scales are generally based upon 10-minute averages, which are approximately 15% lower.

This table provides a useful-at-a-glance comparison of the various scales currently in use. Further complications arise due to the fact different agencies obtain different estimates for the same storm at the same time, so be careful to use the most appropriate source agency.

Hey, those NCDC data are good but they are really confusing to search for specific data. How are you able to receive those event reports? Eg. how did you get to this report? Did you use the map or the search field or something else? RaNdOm26 10:18, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding hypothetical hurricanes

[edit]

Okay i understand, but ya'll need to know a few things: I make hypothetical hurricanes for fun and at no serious matter concerning about real TCs, second i (please excuse my language) suck like hell on making real sandbox articles for real tropical cyclones and lack on vocabluary, sources, etc and contian way too much typos. Also, i don't understand why "wikipedia is not...", it seems to take way personal freedom and discourage users. — Alastor Moody (T + C + U) 06:53, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NOT. There is no "personal freedom" on Wikipedia, we're not here for you. Our aim is to build an encyclopedia. There are free wiki hosting sites for you. See [4]. – Chacor 08:31, 12 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WOW!

[edit]

Look at the low off the eastern U.S. coastline! and theres a two areas of convection in the atlantic and caribbean. I think the east U.S. low may get in invest sometime soon. Storm05 16:24, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Egad!, the storm has an eye!, maybe this will become joyce sooner or later, if the NRL and NHC makes its decision to put out an invest on it. Storm05 16:58, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It appears to strengthen and get better organized. Dunno, maybe we could have Tropical Storm (or Subtropical Storm Joyce) in a day or so. Storm05 19:18, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh by the way, theres another area of convection several hundred miles east of the E. U.S. low. Dont know if the NHC will place an invest on that as well. Storm05 19:19, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
However, Subtropical Storm Nichole, Ana, Otto and Karen formed out of extratropical storms and Vince and Hurricane Epislion formed in water below 80°F.Storm05 19:31, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I looked at the Typhoon Wanda article and it looked okay altough the intro needed to be in two paragrah and more info is needed for the Hainan Island impact. However, the guidelines you gave to User:Mitchazenia are in question. Like for example you said.

tropical waves don't occur in the WPAC, and if they do it probably wouldn't form there

Which is incorrect, tropical waves do form in the WPAC. The next comment you gave him was very confusing...

I know it happened back in 1962, but do you have any meteorlogical conditions? Why did it strengthen quickly?

There may be any metorlogical conditions, but as for how the storm strengthen to quickly thats impossible to explain because it happened back in 1962 and the JTWC reports do not go into detail and any specifc reason of why wanda strengthen to quickly is next to impossible unless its mentioned in a source about rapid strengthening. The same applies to your addtional comments and the records section should be kept separate from the impact because it had nothing to do with impact. And finally, a good article is NOT determined by the number of sources but the amount of info and how well written it is. Storm05 13:39, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hink-do you have the link to the newer 1962 report-it would really help.Mitchazenia(7300+edits) 22:10, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You said there was an updated report, and i was gonna use it for 1962 in general.Mitchazenia(7300+edits) 00:10, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Check newer JTWC reports that give parts of the storm history, and let me know how many form from tropical waves."-That saying on Storm05's page, cause now i have to go change most of the tropical waves to something else.Mitchazenia(7300+edits) 00:14, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You gotta link for Gary Padgett's 1962 data?Mitchazenia(7300+edits) 00:26, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well I just found something intresting- 1962's T.D.66W may be Tropical Storm 66W, I just watched an animation of its lifetime. JMA and Digital Typhoon have it under no-name storm, but it follows the same track as TD66W, with a little addition.I think we may have a secret storm. here. Mitchazenia(7400+edits) 22:57, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to read the best tracks very well, so here-6219 is the code. The JMA Best Track data doesn't track depressions for one thing, 66W matches the data start date listed of September 11, 1962. If you look at the track map on the first link i left you- don't you see the light blue dots?Mitchazenia(7400+edits) 23:08, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually the JMA has it too-i was just about to bring that but Babe=Babs, Carla=Charlotte-I'm wondering what to put.Mitchazenia(7400+edits) 00:50, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Future articles

[edit]

Thanks for the links! The only good info I could only find for Beryl (other than the NHC) was from cnn.com and all of that was just on preparations. I barely could find anything on impact, and I couldn't find a website that mentions about deaths from Beryl other than the one in the TCR report. :-( I would be surprised if I found out there were five webpages solely on Beryl's impact. However, I did find a few good reports from cnn.com for Florence, which is why I thought I had better luck with Florence. I hope it won't take TOO much of your time, but I am asking if you could help me out finding webpages for impact on Beryl, please! That's your choice though. Oh yeah, I saw the newspaper archive too, and I'm NOT gonna just register in it just because I wanna use it for Wikipedia research!!! No way! RaNdOm26 05:51, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1962 again...

[edit]

I'm so tired of bugging you about this, but can i ask a question and a favor?

  • Question: Why are the tropical depressions included as subtropical storms in the best track? Because if they are, they belong in the ACE right? To add to that, why is Mary not included?
  • Favor: If you can solve something for me for the season. I know you avoid the WPac, but if you could help with some of my planned articles:
  1. Opal
  2. Kate
  3. Ruth

I already have Amy, Wanda and Harriet in user pages, still need more info though for Amy and Harriet. Please and thanks.Mitchazenia(7600+edits) 23:42, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eh forget it. Look at how Harriet's coming along, even found me a damage amount :>. Can you tell me besides more impact and aftermath, what else to add?Mitchazenia(7600+edits) 20:18, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No duh, i said that other than impact. I wasn't gonna publish it yet. Gotta add a lot still.Mitchazenia(7600+edits) 20:23, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I had a weird idea in my own dream. Since 1962 PTS is getting too long, if i make a other storms section, it wouldn't change. My dream showed making a page called Tropical depressions of the 1962 Pacific typhoon season. Strange but its true, and to me its not a bad idea as the JTWC did the same thing.Mitchazenia(8300+edits) 00:47, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
While i waited, i found something very interesting. Look at the fourth page in this: [6]. It seems Tiros found one of those suspect cyclones after all (#61)-now it seems to actually exists. Does it merits mentioning? Mitchazenia(8300+edits) 00:57, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I passed TS Bertha ('02) for you. Dean i put on hold for a slight error. And 2, do you have a working link to the full 1962 Monthly Weather Review?Mitchazenia(7900+edits) 23:28, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another question, why is ACE in the west pacific not used if there's already a chart for it on the talk page?Mitchazenia(7900+edits) 00:16, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The good news is i got ahold of it without your link, but i was awfully dissipointed with the results. Now i ask of a favor, this may be hard but, using the 1962 page and the assessment scale, on my userpage, rate the level of the cyclone history of each cyclone there. The classes on my page are: Stub, C-Class, Start, B-Class, Good-Class, A-Class and of course FA-Class. My userpage has my own opinions, but to me, if you can help by leaving your opinion about each one, it makes my life a lot easier on what to add. Thanks hink.Mitchazenia(7900+edits) 19:12, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, but new question, which do you think i did the best, other then the grammar trouble.Mitchazenia(7900+edits) 23:41, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Im going to create the Typhoon Freda (1962) article but other users are against that, saying that the storm wasnt conntected to the 1962 Columbus Day Storm although most of the online sources clearly states that Freda struck the Western United States as an extratropical storm. Storm05 15:36, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't put words in my mouth, please. I never said that the Columbus Day Storm of 1962 wasn't connected. For Hink's reference, User talk:Chacor#Freda and User talk:Storm05#Don't bother. – Chacor 15:38, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What about Tropical Storm Nicholas (2003)? Storm05 19:43, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Or the two cyclones (tropical and subtropical) that composed Hurricane Gordon (1994). TPC handled Nicolas and Lenny (1999) similarly, even though it seemed clear on satellite imagery that Lenny's low survived an additional week or two as an extratropical cyclone and that Nicolas was absorbed by another low to its west. Be that as it may, the references I've seen concerning our Columbus Day storm talk about it evolving from Freda's extratropical low. In my mind, that would mean the two should be talked about in the same article. I wouldn't be against moving the Columbus Day Storm to an article named Typhoon Freda and talking about its extratropical impact in the last half of the article, as long as cyclone was thrown onto its talk page in addition to hurricane. [edit]

Hi again. I've gotten to another one of your noms, and put it on hold so that a few minor issues can be fixed. I look forward to hearing from you. Green451 01:46, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Erika GA passed

[edit]

Ta dum! Congrats, I have passed the article. Do forgive me for being so picky about the references, as I was not aware that the Cyclones WikiProject had a different standard, and on a second look, I realized that all of the facts were referenced in the citations at the end of the major sentences. At least I'll know for the next time I review a hurricane/tropical storm GA nom. I look forward to reviewing another one of your noms. Cheers, Green451 17:16, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New article project

[edit]

Except there's little to no impact. I've tried different google search terms. Should I mention that Kristy missed making landfall and leave it at that, There's no preps or impact. But i did find an interesting thing, John, Kristy and Ernesto were 3 active storms on August 30. Does that merit mention?Mitchazenia(8300+edits) 20:36, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops missed something, whats the record for reaching tropical storm status 3 times in a row, like Kristy. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mitchazenia (talkcontribs) 21:53, 14 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]
I've taken back to my new 1987 project-the unnamed tropical storm-Question, since i doubt i'll be done by New Year's, can i add the 2007 estimate, because I have it.Mitchazenia(8300+edits) 03:01, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

81, 82, and first half of 83

[edit]

Their up on GIBBS! Unfortunatley, 1981 and 1982 only have GMS shots of the west Pacific. But still, its progress! (edit: Oh, by the way, Goes 5 is up on 1983 incase we need beter pictures of the four cyclones.) →Cyclone1 00:13, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Haha! Thanks! →Cyclone1 03:19, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know, that sucks. It was cool to Typhoon Freda though. I had no idea how huge it was. →Cyclone1 03:27, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I didn't even think about Tip. That would be awesome to see. →Cyclone1 00:09, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1970 Bhola Cyclone

[edit]

I was just wondering if you can work on this article, 1970 Bhola Cyclone as it killed over 500,000 people and make it into a featured article. Thank you. Mercenary2k 20:41, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, on the image you uploaded for that storm, the description and link are for TD9 in 2001. →Cyclone1 22:27, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

HURDAT

[edit]

Dude! Are you serious? I didn't know about this. So it's official? We now have at least a dot on a map for tropical cyclones back to 1700? If so that's really freaking cool. With that info, it took me about three minutes to knock up a track for the Great Hurricane of 1780, that, using what I already knew, can't be too far off. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 23:33, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I can dig up your e-mail address again, I'll e-mail you this track I made of the Great Hurricane of 1780. I based it on the report from the British surveyer and that report, which actually gives a latitude and longitude of a possible point of extratropical transition (44N,50W). -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 02:53, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You've got mail. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 19:46, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I had a look, and I left copious comments on the talk page. Feel free to poke me with any questions. Titoxd(?!?) 06:20, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dream come true (hopefully)

[edit]

If GIBBS expands its image archive back through 1979 like it's suggesting, I will finally be able to see something I've dreamed about for years: The chance to have a God's-eye view of the greatest tropical cyclone ever to roam the seas at its record intensity and unmatched scale. Oh what I wouldn't give to get my hands on such an image. JTWC has one in its report, but it's of terrible quality (distant, grainy and like a color image printed on a black-and-white printer). -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 21:17, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1990 Pacific hurricane season

[edit]

As you have notices I've been working on this article for two days: adding depressions, missing storms, expanding the summary and checking spelling and grammar. I've noted you have bumped it up to a B. Now what can I do to bump it up to GA-class at least? I will thank you if you answer me. juan andrés 03:15, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DYK!

[edit]
Updated DYK query On December 21, 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Effects of Hurricane Isabel in North Carolina, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Thanks for your contributions! ++Lar: t/c 14:54, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #7

[edit]

Number 7, December 22, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. This shortened late issue covers just global tropical cyclone activity in November, to prevent the next newsletter from being too large.

Tropical cyclone activity

  • One hurricane, Hurricane Sergio, formed in the eastern Pacific. Sergio was the longest lasting November Pacific hurricane recorded. Two other tropical cyclones, Tropical Storm Rosa and a tropical depression formed in the basin. None of the systems affected land.
  • An unusual extratropical cyclone developed in the northern central Pacific, resembling a subtropical cyclone at its peak.
  • A total of three typhoons formed in the western Pacific, and all the storms followed a similar track across the Philippines. Typhoon Cimaron formed at the end of October and lasted into November, killing 19 people. Typhoon Chebi existed during the middle of the month and was the weakest of the three causing minor damages. The most devastating storm of the month, Typhoon Durian hit the Philippines on November 30, killing at least 720 people in the island nation.
  • Two named cyclones developed in the Southern Hemisphere, Tropical Cyclone Yani in the South Pacific and Moderate Tropical Storm Anita in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Two unnamed depression also formed in the South Pacific. None of these storms affected land.

Editorial

The lateness of this edition is due to me being on an wikibreak and no-one taking up the slack. My wikibreak was the result of a lightning strike damaging my internet connection and frying my router, and the time taken for the replacement to arrive. As this issue is almost 3 weeks later than planned, only the monthly cyclone activity for November has been included. The next letter will be produced for January 7, 2006 and will be larger than normal to cover both month's Wikipedia news and December's tropical activity. There will be no Member or Storm of the month in January, to reduce the length; and the newsletter will return to normal in February.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:59, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Other FA's

[edit]

How are the other 2003 articles coming along? Any others ready for FAC? I know you are doing a lot to upgrade all of them (all except the under construction Isabel is GA or better)...I'd upgrade Juan to A-class but that would create a bias. CrazyC83 02:55, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Alice GA nom on hold

[edit]

Hey there again. I've put the nom on hold to fix a few issues. Knowing you, this will be a GA by the end of today. Cheers, Green451 18:20, 23 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Alice GA nom passed

[edit]

Thanks for making all the changes. Congrats, Green451 03:03, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inflation

[edit]

Ok. Tell me if this one works, but it only goes to 2006. Dollar Times Inflation Calculator. For an example:

  • Hurricane Katrina:
  • 2005: 81,200,000,000 = 2006: $84,436,077,608 in USD.

Is this reliable?Mitchazenia(8600+edits) 18:17, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have started this again, yet it looks better than it was. Tell me if I over did it with the referencing, because I have 33 ref'd to the TCR. Mitchazenia(8600+edits) 17:14, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me.. Every time I try fixing an article, I end up getting that stupid this:

Banner on the page, I fixed Alicia caused it looked horrible beforehand.Mitchazenia(8700+edits) 18:01, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, tell me What I should fix in Alicia? I fixed it around a little. (should've been a stub to start with).Mitchazenia(8700+edits) 18:10, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: SPAC track

[edit]

No I don't think I had that one. Looks interesting, but is utterly unusable without some more info. I recognise HURDAT (like)-formatting and from that can extract stuff. However, a link to the source page as well as the BT file would be helpful. That page will have a link to the format description, which should answer any queries (its not obvious whether the sustained winds are 1 min or 10 min or something else for example. One thing I know for sure is that is SHEM not SPAC (Reunion is mentioned). Oh and I know this is a silly place for this, but re Isabel and NEXRAD - do you want a reflectivity image at or near landfall; or something like this?--Nilfanion (talk) 22:29, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Damn, its borderline useless then. I can extract name/date/locations from the data. However its not that usable for much beyond basic IDs, as its not clear where the data comes from. Without knowing what exactly the data means (the equivalent of this page for HURDAT, I, or anyone else for that matter, cannot really use it with confidence (the knots is obvious but is it always 1 min, always 10 min or a mixture depending on the source agency?) I'll have a proper look around and see if I get lucky, but a lot of that data is wasted without that explanation. The alternative is to write to the institution and get an explanation. As for Isabel, that will be done soon.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:54, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

GA nom failed in 1991

[edit]

As you've said, Carlos infobox was incorrect and has been checked and corrected. Now, why do you say the season summary is lacking of sources? How much do I have to do with the season summary, until this is clear and comprehensible? Please explain me. Thank you. juan andrés 21:47, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As you say, I took the season summary from this source. What's the problem with the source, so? juan andrés 22:05, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: 2000 AHS

[edit]

Actually, I WAS gonna think of doing a whole project on 2000. However, I'm now becoming more interested working on the 2000 PHS, since I see some Pacific articles need some improving. If you know some good links related to that article, you are free to tell me! Thanks for helping. RaNdOm26 05:39, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for those links! But what I actually meant was working on 2000 Pacific hurricane season, not on storm articles! LOL RaNdOm26 06:56, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
