Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Hirocho28, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Ramen Jiro

[edit]

Hi there!

I noticed that in your article Ramen Jiro, you used a lot of formatting that's similar to what's used in the Japanese Wikipedia, like putting punctuation after rather than before citations. I've fixed it for you this time, but if you plan on continuing to edit Wikipedia after your class is finished (and I hope you do!), please take a few minutes to review the English Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Please also make sure that your citations match the content you're trying to cite. I had to remove the last sentence of the "Locations" section because you mentioned having to drink up the broth, which wasn't supported by the citation. I know it's part of ramen etiquette, but if it's not in the citation then it can't stay. (it also might fit better in the general article on ramen instead!)

Finally, if you're interested in joining Wikiproject Japan, we could use the help! :) -Mcampany (talk) 08:34, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ramen Jiro

[edit]

Hi Hirocho28, I noticed you reverted my edit, which was designed to take out Native Advertising. The store information is promotional and against WP:NOTADVERTISING. It is non encyclopedic. WP is not a random webhost. Please do not add it back in. scope_creep (talk) 19:20, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Scope creep, I do not think the "location" sections, which merely describes stores' characteristics and the food they serve. As a matter of fact, the Ramen Jiro article in Japanese Wikipedia(original one) has more extensive list of their toppings and stores, and although the Japanese version of Ramen Jiro page went through much more edits than the English version, "stores" section has never been deleted. Also, the page has already been reviewed by an official Wikipedia editors, since it is a part of WikiEdu project, and they did not delete the section. Therefore, I will put the content back, and will make some other edits. Hirocho28 (talk) 21:04, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Hirocho28 Promotion and advertising here is a big thing on the English Wikipedia in the last few years, particularly around native advertising. Other encyclopedias don't face the same pressures that the English encyclopedia does, because they don't sit next to the American advertising industry, conceptually. Here on the English encyclopedia, a tremendous amount of advertising was coming in over the last five years, it was overwhelming really. About 2-3 years ago, WP:NPP and WP:AFC were introduced to remedy that situation, providing a review mechanism for articles and people. Now your article may have been reviewed, but some reviewers more attuned to the problem of native advertising. The folk who are running the WikiEdu project, perhaps don't understand those pressures, and don't understand that your content is business advertising. It classed as advertising. Your extension has all the aspects of advertising, and is written in a manner that is designed to advertise. It is advertising a business plain and simple. Dont revert again please. If you revert it will be considered disruptive. Please remember that this is an encyclopedia, not a webhost, or menu. Toppings is not encyclopedia, and is of little interest to the average reader, nor is locations. There is multiple ways outside Wikipedia where locations can be found. Please dont add it back in. If you add it back in, it will be found disruptive. scope_creep (talk) 23:37, 25 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Scope creep I am still not convinced that WP:NPP and WP:AFC apply to this article's sections regarding menus and locations. Even in other articles with much more edits, including See Foods, we can them. As a result, I do think the section is not an advertisement and should be reverted. I am looking forward to your reply. Hirocho28 (talk) 03:22, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Hirocho28: What I am trying to illustrate that NPP and AFC were a product of the backlash, in part against advertising, they don't explicitly apply to this content, but the idea or concept applies to it, the concept of review. Review catches most stuff, but dodgy content is still written with those who have an agenda to horse WP (Not you). Certain policies in the last couple of years have been updated to deal with advertising, in its native format. WP:NCORP comes to mind to stop the endless flow of start-ups positing the same funding information, it has been almost become a trope. But it is WP:NOTADVERTISING that is explicitly applied in the context, and the most important policy of all is WP Terms of use, and that was updated to reflect the fact that advertising is explicitly banned in Wikipedia. Indeed at one point, folk were taking about WP loosing its licence to operate as charity. The problem is that advertising is such a big part of most businesses now, regarding the social domain, and it leaks into every part of Wikipedia. Its really only there to sell, and entirely non encyclopedic. Looking at the Legal Sea Foods, it is stonkingly bad, look at this one, Recaro, possibly worse. Terrible articles, but there is a finite resource at this end to fix it, but an almost limitless resource at the other end. The review system, Afc, NPP have reduced a whole bundle of it, but at the end of the days, some of still gets through. I hope I can turn you into an anti-vandal, anti-spam, anti-advertising warrior. If not at the end of the day, you'll leave and I will remove it, or you will stay, and have an epiphany 5k, 10k edits up the road, and remove it yourself. Either way, it wont survive. I can't spend any more on this. scope_creep (talk) 18:55, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Scope creep I looked at other articles with even more views/edits, including Taco Bell, and I could still find a lot of descriptions about its food or stores. Depictions of the food the restaurant serves are an essential part of its article in an encyclopedia in general (take a look at Encyclopedia Britannica), and WP:NOTADVERTISING does not apply to this case at all. I think your extremely strong belief about WP:NOTADVERTISING does not align with what other Wikipedians think. Also, I would really appreciate it if you could stop talking in such a condescending manner.Hirocho28 (talk) 23:38, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Hirocho28:, Sorry if I sounded condescending, I never meant to. I don't concentrate only on advertising, it is one aspect amongst many others, like tone, layout, structure, links, referencing, npov and so on to make the article the best it can be. I don't think I can convince you. scope_creep (talk) 12:22, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Ramen Jiro

[edit]

Thanks for creating Ramen Jiro.

A New Page Patroller Rosguill just tagged the page as having some issues to fix, and wrote this note for you:

Good work, it just needs some minor copyediting.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can reply over here and ping me. Or, for broader editing help, you can talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.
