Jon Bon Jovi, the philanthropist!
Hi, I see that you reverted my edit and removed the word "philanthropist" from the leading paragraph of Jon Bon Jovi. While Bon Jovi is famous for his entertainment career, he has been doing pretty important philanthropic work (serving food/shelter/rehabilitation to homeless people) since 2005/06 through his Soul Foundation. I think he qualifies to be called a philanthropist by now. Thoughts? Sabih omar 17:15, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for getting in touch. I didn't realise you had added this. I just removed it because I didn't like it.
- Not to take anything away from his charitable work, I don't think reliable sources refer to him as a philanthropist. His foundation is already mentioned in the lead and in the article, and this could be expanded if good sources are found. What do you think? // Hippo43 (talk) 19:18, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Here are some major coverage referring to him as a philanthropist: [1][2],[3],[4] In fact, at this point he is much more of a philanthropist than an actor-- he hasn't acted in anything for like 20 years. He was also sitting at the top of Forbe's most charitable celebrity list back in 2012.[5] But you can argue that the other celebrities on the list don't have the philanthropist label in their leading sentences and I would agree. So I think it's fine to leave that out.
- And yes, the Soul foundation article needs some attention. It's a mere stub right now. Cheers! Sabih omar 21:14, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe you are right. It's a strange one, because he wouldn't be notable as an actor or a philanthropist if he wasn't Jon Bon Jovi first. I'm also not convinced he's notable as a guitarist.
- I just dislike the term philanthropist in this context. When used about a rich famous person who has set up a foundation, it seems peacock-y to me. I also don't like opening sentences which read like "Hippo43 is a singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, actor, producer, comedian, model, spokesperson, activist, entrepreneur and philanthropist."
- So if you want to put it back in, I won't object. I would prefer something like "Jon Bon Jovi is an American singer." followed by the other stuff he's done outlined in the lead, but that version wouldn't last very long. // Hippo43 (talk) 22:46, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
