Banned editors

Hi Heather, I'm an economics major senior doing Wikipedia editing as part of a independent study lab on contemporary media arts. I've edited about ten articles so far, and I'm going to write up my experience with those and continue editing informally. But I've also become interested in banning from Wikipedia, so my adviser suggested I contact you because of your research proposal on missing wikipedians.

On the third day after I started here, the banned editor User:Grundle2600 contacted me on my talk page about a blog post he wrote about the article Presidency of Barack Obama (probably because I had proposed a critical edit on that article's talk page) which described basically every critical thing which had ever been removed from that article. Someone else quickly deleted his message. Most of the items in his blog post were trivial, but some of the items seemed very substantial to me, so I started looking at Grundle2600's history and asking questions. I got some good answers, but also some push-back and what seemed like euphemisms under the circumstances.

In my lab report, I would like to explore the hypothesis that the prohibition against edit wars on articles means that "disruptive editing" has become a euphemism for annoying, unpopular, or both. I have these questions:

(1) Are there any existing studies of banned users or the reasons and circumstances for banning?

(2) Is there a way to get a list or a random sample of banned editors?

(3) Do you have any suggestions for this sort of a study in general?

Sounds really interesting, Ellen! I haven't seen any studies of banned users in particular but there is a bit on Wikipedia conflict (just do a Google search on "Wikipedia conflict" on Google scholar and you'll find them). You can get a list of banned users from this page but that won't give you blocked users. Not sure how you'd find that out but let me know if you do :)

In adding some of the footnotes the aim was also to satirise some of the academic commentaries on "ancient texts" that exist. Although it might not be your field directly, presumably you've encountered certain conventions of academic writing in older works.

Do you remember how you found the article? Yes, I found out about the event on BBC News and went to Wikipedia for more information but as you saw the article had just been created and was simple. I did mainly maintenance-type edits to Wikify the article and make it look acceptable to a mainstream audience. It was only a few hours after it had been first created, but you may have encountered it from AFC? No, I never look at the general AFC, and only occasionally on WikiProjects.
