Good one!vcxlor 03:11, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't there somewhere in wikipedia some sort of hit count measure, or is it a broad 'subject ' based tally? vcxlor 04:44, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Josh, your work on the optional parameter taxobox was fantastic, and greatly appreciated. Unfortunately it was completely failing at Jarrah and Banksia. I fixed this problem, but my fix resulted in many taxoboxes showing ugly whitespace. Another user fixed the ugly whitespace problem, but their fix once more destroyed the taxoboxes at Jarrah and Banksia. I have reverted to the ugly whitespace version. What we really need is a taxobox genius like yourself to find a way of fixing both problems at once. Any interest? Hesperian 06:07, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've found the problem. Wikitables handle whitespace very poorly; basically there needs to be an extra line in each row template, and I've added those in the form of blank comments. It should work now. Thanks, Josh
I had just emailed the editor of the darlington review and given the locations of arts on darlington,wa, darlington review, darlington hall, etc - and thought (while outside of my a/c) I should clean up my page, just in case she wanted to 'probe'. anyway anyone with nouse could google the vc name and find my yahoo identity anyway, and then the white pages online - and da da! I didnt want to be seen advertising the arts I had created. diplomacy, guile or tact? etc. So thanks, I appreciate your effort, you're a good wiki mate, I still feel v bad about the way I started though.vcxlor 07:16, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting point, not one of the massive 79 publications had an index. Academically speaking, - 250% for guile for not employing an indexer! It makes the big tomes relatively difficult to navigate. Interesting gallops government did not have any apparent publishing project for the more recent celebraion (175th or something)
I have as a project the 1929 centenary as a book ( If I live long enough) as a relative was here in Perth in that year and I do have access to materials to do with that year.
When I was doing part of a project some 10 years ago, I came acoss Connerton's 'How Societies Remember' but never sufficiently digested it due to time pressures. Possibly a wiki project would be the whole thing of 50, 100, 125, 150 and 175 celebrations in particular environments (usually institutions who have enough money to do so) whether national, state or otherwise. But as always, too many ideas and not enough time or money! vcxlor 04:07, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK revert is ok at this point, but most did not have indexes in their first editions specially! You might have a copy of a second? I used to have the set, but I will check that, point takenvcxlor 03:08, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your interest. What you say is perfectly valid, however Miss Ambi acted unilaterally and precipitiously. I want her to repace the text. Apologize for breaking numerous wiki-etiquette rules and desist from stalking me. (If I had behaved as she did Id be rightly reprimanded and worse.) Then we can proceed as adults. Eric A. Warbuton 05:51, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
And why shouldnt I defend myself? I had no choice but to put that text up. It brought attention to Miss Ambi's theft of text ohterwise noone would of noticed. All of it factual. Can I unilaterally and without negotiation at any time remove any text of yours? I thought not. Eric A. Warbuton 06:15, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
God what a waste of wiki space they need a larger heading and then they can go for it. In Tassie (and there is an article about it) we on the west coast were more oriented to Melbourne than Hobart (even in the late 20th C) and Hobart and Lonnie were endlessly at it, and then the issue of 'The Mainlanders', god it could go forever! as for the regional rivalries even here in wa. my theories on big brother john forrest and how he played off the regions, is another story again. keep up the good work!vcxlor 03:45, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Good to see you have had a look at Adrian's book (he was a fellow ARHS enthusiast with Geoff H) re MCDavies. There need to be entries for the jetties, and augusta, flinders, and hamelin need to be cleaned up! (have you heard this from me before?) Have you heard of the Pericles wreck? A good stort in that one, probably in Henderson's wrecks book.vcxlor 14:51, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Been on too much, have many things to keep up with, takin a break keep up the good work, I have some ideas about the book plate thing, I'll let you know here - probably a week or two from now. Best Wishes vcxlor 08:35, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Couldnt resist, had to see whats going on. Georgette art looks good, you should check out Pericles! I dont know which would be the best source other than henderson. Also the multiple wrecks at Hamelin Bay/Jetty are good ones too. Good to see your confidence with the 6 hungry families - I would have thought it was more fluid butvcxlor 08:25, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
First, I must apologise for monopolising your talk page. Next, Swan View Tunnel - see there's a typical example, I feel very awkward about an article like that: you may feel that way about 6 hungry families - stannage may well have identified the six with their mansions on the south side of adelaide terrace sufficiently to be confident that these were the guys, but my sense of fluidity is the marriage politics. look for eg viz a vis our mate Forrest, he married in. my now ex neighbour who was a barrett lennard with connections by marriage to most of the hungry 6 is a good example. But hell leave it to the genealogists, it'd drive even a computer program to incinerate itself to untangle the web of what I allude to in fluidity - the gene pool for that lot must have really brought about 6 fingers or toes somewhere along!!vcxlor 15:05, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]Hi Drew, I am a journalist with The Sunday Times. I am keen to write an article on the Western Australian angle on Wikipedia. May I interview you? If so, please contact me via dcohen@amnet.net.au or 0414 780 441. Regards, David Cohen

Hey Drew. Thank you for keeping watch over my page; it's good to know somebody's about to defend me when I'm not around. It was a nasty - if laughable - little message to come to upon logging in. Also, I really appreciated your insight with the whole Tony1 thing a while back. I had meant to thank you, but admittedly, I was a little moody afterwards - I felt he was trying to manipulate me, but was unsure of his motivations. More significantly, however, "real life" caught up with me, and I've been overwhelmed since. Anyways, thanks again. Actually, although I know you've been keeping busy with the banksia (and other) articles (which are fantastic), do you feel up for RfA (even if Tony showed its downside)? I'd very much like to nominate you. Happy editing, :)--cj | talk 23:28, 22 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Drew, sorry for not answering your post re Intercolonial cricket from the other day. I missed it somehow. According to cricketarchive.com, an "RE Bush" umpired in the intercolonial played between WA and Victoria in April 1893 at the MCG [1]. (WA had actually played an earlier match against South Australia at Adelaide Oval in March 1893 [2]. That was the 1st Intercolonial played by Western Australia. The MCG match was the 2nd).
And also according to cricketarchive, "Robert Edwin Bush" (linked to from your article) played in a number of 1st class matches in England between 1874 and 1877, but none in Australia, and no umpiring records are shown. Cricketarchive doesn't acknowledge they're the same person, but I think it's a reasonable guess that they are.
To muddle things further, Wisden's www.cricinfo.com says that in that April 1893 match at the MCG, the umpires were "HJ Alessio and RE Bush", and "ED Heather deputised as RE Bush" [3].
So on balance, it certainly appears that it's wrong to say Bush "played in the first ever...". I think it's therefore best to delete the sentence entirely. I'll do that, but feel free to revert if you disagree.
And yes, I'm looking forward to a good Test for a change, if nothing more than to steel the Aussies for next year's Ashes series.
Good luck with your RfA BTW, not that you'll need it I'm sure. -- Ian ≡ talk 15:44, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- I've just been reading a bit about Robert and found out his brother James Arthur Bush is an interesting character also. He played international rugby for England and was W.G. Grace's friend and was best man at WG's wedding.[4]
Hi. As I was checking things before voting in your RFA, I noticed you had edited the now-deleted article Dryandra. I'm curious what went wrong, as I thought that was a genus of Australian plants that I would have expected you to have written a strong article on. (I have voted in favour and will not change my vote based on any answer to this question). --Scott Davis Talk 12:20, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks. I knew I'd never heard of Vernicia, but was surprised there isn't an article on Dryandra. I don't have the knowledge or resources to write it though, even beyond a sentence or two. Good luck with your RFA. --Scott Davis Talk 12:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, will adjust life accordingly. Very interested to see whether they focus too much on piggy, or who they might "use" on explaining the "great man". When the family house in Mount Street was being cleaned up at one stage, my father seemed to get huge cane chairs that might have been the great man's. We've since sold them... I'm looking forward to spending my summer holidays shut away in a darkened room, drinking G&Ts and playing with my new tools ;-) Please accept this Tim Tam as a token of my gratitude. Cnwb 22:33, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]Why did you delete the article on Rodolfo Ruffatti, the photographer, just because you do not know him does not mean he is of importance.
- I deleted the article in accordance with Wikipedia policy, which approves deletion of "an article about a real person that does not assert that person's importance or significance." The content of the article
- Rodolfo Ruffatti Batlle. Born: July, 7th 1983. Photographer. Political Scientist.
- clearly met that criteria. Note that the policy refers to qualities of the article not the subject, so the deletion should not be interpreted as a judgement that Rufatti-Batlle is unimportant. Cheers, Hesperian 02:54, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Categories
Hi Hamedog,
There is a Wikipedia guideline that says we only put articles in their most specific categories; that is, an article should not be in both a category and one of its sub-categories. In the case of Category:Public Schools Association, this was in Category:Private schools in Western Australia, Category:Schools in Western Australia, Category:Education in Western Australia and Category:Education, even though the first is a subcategory of the second, which is a subcategory of the third, which is a subcategory of the fourth. You also had Category:Public Schools Association listed as a subcategory of itself, which I'm sure I don't need to convince you is inappropriate.
Once you have created Category:Public Schools Association, article Public Schools Association doesn't need to be in any other category, because any other category that the article should be in the category should be in too.
As for templates, putting a template in a category will put every article to which the template is added into that category too. So one must be very careful. For example, you put Template:Public Schools Association in Category:Associations of Schools, which would seem to make sense, except that as soon as you put the template into Hale School, Hale School then ends up in Category:Associations of Schools, which is obviously incorrect.
Sorry to dump so much information on you; you looked like you needed a bit of help. Hesperian | Talk 00:45, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- What do you suggest I do then? Hamedog 00:47, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Drew, I can see you are busy, but I would be very curious as to your reaction to this. I had placed an embedded extra note in the rhino message above, but thought you might have missed it. vcxlor 02:07, 15 December 2005 (UTC) The points you raise are good ones - if you have those ones at the top of your head, maybe you should add em! The method of categorisation needs more careful outlining at the beginning of the art, and indeed if you see my see also at the bottom, you can see that as trying to provide a framework. will try to add more, it might help further. thanks for your comments.vcxlor 02:38, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Heh heh the whole list for the art was from Andrew's head! So you are forgiven it was 1932. No rush to add, but thought it might get some thinking... am hoping to link it in with crime in wa as well vcxlor 02:49, 15 December 2005 (UTC) Have made links with oz and wa crime anyway[reply]

Noongar
[edit]I don't really have a strong opinion on the name of the article. As you probably know Aboriginal words don't really have a standard english spelling. Although I do dislike wikipedia using google to sort out issues I've just done a check and Noongar returns over 53 thousand entries whereas Nyungar only returns about 20 thousand. If that is the qualifier then I'd leave it alone, sorry for not being more definitive but my instinct is to leave it as is. What was the driver to change it?
Despite 'systematic' methods as suggested to me yesterday, maybe you might as an admin be interested in 210.50.25.64 who has laboriously placed links to his/her/it's 'free service' and responded to nacho mate with 'block me if you like' for what looks like every suburb that has an entry. oh to be able to understand bots'!!vcxlor 15:22, 15 December 2005 (UTC) Sorry I coudnt resist put my two bobs worth on their talk page. porbably storm in teacup. shd get to sleep!vcxlor 15:39, 15 December 2005 (UTC) Cripes, I do hope doing all those reverts didnt take too much of your time!! I was taking issue of a listing that omitted Sir as part of the title within wikipedia. But if it was as you say a laborious process, I'll leave you be. My apologies, I'll stay out your way on ths one. Don't let the vandals and trolls get you down !!! vcxlor 12:59, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Then I realise I didnt even answer you question! Sorry Drew, havent been having a good day at all, and then I let it seep into talk pages again. vcxlor 13:08, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining the issue - best to leave it as is!, and the best in christmas wishes.vcxlor 13:32, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for correcting the info I put into the article 'Noongar' on G.F. Moore. My copy of Moore is in my office and I'm at home, so I was going by memory to get something in place and correct it later, but you beat me to it, thanks! Dougg 07:58, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- Same to you (with an emphasis on a happy New Year)! Wonder what 2006 will bring us...--cj | talk 13:55, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- With acute embarrassment of having cluttering up your talk page from start to end, trust you
have a good christmas. You're too kind! Best Wishes vcxlor 14:57, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
New years resolution will be: spend a little less time here and a bit more in the real world. Compliments of the season. -- Ian ≡ talk 16:01, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You previously offered if I needed administrative assistance, and now I do. Here's what's happened; I tried to create a Futurama Portal, but soon realised it was too hard, and can't go through with it. Can you please delete the Portal A.S.A.P. so there's not too much trouble, cause I don't want any problems to occur. Thankyou.--M Johnson 06:20, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm curious as to why you have a "__NOTOC__" in your talk page? -- Ian ≡ talk 15:23, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi mate, noticed you've contributed a bit of footy information to Wikipedia. Would you be interested in joining WikiProject AFL? Rogerthat 10:17, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
