Hank - It is considered improper to edit an article about oneself or ones own work, as per our conflict of interest policy. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:21, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- So then how am I supposed to keep that info accurate and free from trolls and vandals? Henryhank (talk) 18:19, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- According to this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:COI#Non-controversial_edits the edits I'm making are acceptable. Henryhank (talk) 18:26, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- Discuss it on the article's talk page and get concensus from other editors. Likely they will make the edit themselves anyway. What you think is non-controversial is suspect since it is an article about your project. (This is not to say that you are suspect, just that the possibility of the edit being controversial goes up as the distance between the editor and the subject decreases.) The last sentence in the section you point at is what I'm doing now... pointing out that your edits are potentially controversial. Please don't edit the article without getting support from the talk page. I don't think you'll have trouble finding such support (including from me). - UtherSRG (talk) 18:48, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but the COI guidelines clearly state: "Editors who may have a conflict of interest are allowed to make certain kinds of non-controversial edits, such as:". Changing my name from "Henry A." to "Hank" and removing totally irrelevant (and personal) information unrelated to WG is clearly non-controversial. I've also reverted vandalism and other typos. The guidelines don't say that I have to discuss every single minor change with the other editors before making a change. If the guidelines said that editors with a COI can't make ANY changes to the articles, then you have a case. I'm not going to waste my valuable time discussing every little change on the discussion page first, unless it is controversial, then I would be happy to. The top of the discussion page already states "An individual covered by or significantly related to this article, Where's George?, has edited Wikipedia as Henryhank". If people find my edits controversial, then I'd be happy to discuss it on the discussion page, but I can assure you, I won't making controversial edits.
