Supports All Blacks Inconclusive Supports NZ national rugby union team
Common usage: Google Note: It is very difficult to test how often 'New Zealand' is used in reports using google, as it is pretty much impossible for it to distinguish an article about the team which uses the term 'New Zealand' from an article about rugby which mentions New Zealand in some other context.
Common usage: International organisations Laureus[1] who nominate sportspeople and teams for the Laureus World Sports Awards name the team All Blacks [2] whereas all other national sports teams are [country] [sport] team. [3][4] International Rugby Board uses 'New Zealand' for all results boards and similar, but seems to frequently use 'All Blacks' in articles (for example see here). Here they use both within the same article.
Common usage: Major international media
  • The ABC (Australia) style guide uses 'New Zealand' for scorelines and 'All Blacks' in article text.
  • ESPN Scrum.com use 'New Zealand' in scorelines but 'New Zealand' and 'All Blacks' interchangably in headlines and articles.[5][6]
Common usage: Reference works The 1966 Encyclopedia of New Zealand has an entry under 'All Blacks'.
