Ives String Quartet 2
[edit]Hello there. This might be a little late because I just noticed it. Thanks a lot for expanding the article on Ives String Quartet 2! I studied the work for a while, which prompted me to create the page, though I did not manage to find other commentaries on it. Thanks for your efforts on expanding the work! Blue (Marilyn Crispell and Stefano Maltese album) moved to draftspace
[edit]An article you recently created, Blue (Marilyn Crispell and Stefano Maltese album), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Autopatrolled
[edit]Hi Helen Puffer Thwait, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed' and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned prolific creators of articles where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.
Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.
Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! – Joe (talk) 16:14, 27 June 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you! Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 16:39, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

ARU-related albums
[edit]Greetings, Helen Puffer Thwait! Thanks for your recent work on album articles -- especially your creation of some new articles for albums by members of the Aquarium Rescue Unit. Those are nicely done, and valuable additions to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia of all human knowledge (especially American and British pop culture). — Mudwater (Talk) 22:41, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
@Mudwater:Greetings, Mudwater! Thanks very much for your nice note. But my meager contributions pale in comparison with your relentless, consistent efforts over so many centuries... Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 23:45, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

- Ooh, Yamantaka, and Music to Be Born By too. So, with Däfos, it's the Mickey Hart hat trick. Nice! — Mudwater (Talk) 20:34, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! Oh yes, the well-known, widely-discussed MHHT!
- I have a question, and you probably know the answer. The sources I used for the MtbBB article state that Taro's mother is Mary Holloway Hart. However, in the "Personal life" section of the main Mickey Hart page, there is this sentence: "Hart has been married since 1990 to lawyer, environmental activist and former Sonoma County (California) Regional Parks Director Caryl Hart, with whom he has had two children, Reya and Taro." Any thoughts?
- Thank you for your time. Best, Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 20:44, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- That's a good question, and I actually don't know the answer. Since the album liner notes say that Mary Holloway Hart is Taro Hart's mother, I would assume that's correct. The Mickey Hart WP article, which doesn't mention Mary, says that he married Caryl in 1990, which would be about seven years after the heartbeat recording. So perhaps the Mickey Hart article should be adjusted. Looking at the reference there to the Vermont Review, Hart says that he has a wife and two children, none of whom he names there. — Mudwater (Talk) 21:43, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'll do some digging. There are some interesting comments from someone claiming to be Hart's sister on the MH talk page. Who knows? Thanks again, and take care... Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 22:02, 2 December 2022 (UTC)
- Sounds good. And thanks again for the work on the ARU-related album articles. You're the Aquarium Rescue Unit rescue unit! — Mudwater (Talk) 17:37, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

Peter Brötzmann
[edit]Thank you for restoring a recording by Peter Brötzmann for which an article exists, but please copy a reference from there to his, for as long as his name is on the Main page. I was too tired yesterday, and didn't get to it today yet. Your help is much appreciated, finding references for the many recordings I had to drop because a ref wasn't obvious. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:49, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! I will find and include a reference. Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 11:52, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- Actually, the album is already listed in the existing Tom Hull citation. I hope that's enough. Thanks again for all your work! Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 11:57, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, that should do. It's a topic about which I know nothing, I just felt that such an important figure should appear on the Main page even if our article isn't top class. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:02, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Conference of the Birds
[edit]The article flows so much better now, thanks!
I can't believe I hadn't heard of this album a month ago. TlonicChronic (talk) 01:16, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- Wow, thank you! I never know if the stuff I add is of any value.
- Yeah, it's a great album... I never get tired of it.
- Please keep up the good work!
- Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 12:25, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'm very grateful to {{u|DISEman}} for starting the Sisyphean task of creating seemingly half of the extant ECM articles—his template was the one I modified to get mine—and to people like {{u|Brunton}} adding consistent and reliable ratings and citations. So far, however, I haven't come across work more productive and readable than yours on these albums. TlonicChronic (talk) 14:37, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- Gee, that's waaaay too generous, but thanks! I agree: those two editors did a mind-boggling amount of work. Their persistence is incredible.
- Best,
- Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 17:08, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

ECM standardizing
[edit]There are two things I would love your opinion on: the formatting of the artists name in the opening sentence, and the formatting of the catalogue number.
When the album is credited to a group, e.g. The Paul Bley Quartet, I have been changing the artist from "Canadian jazz pianist Paul Bley" to "the Paul Bley Quartet". I wonder, however, if that is wrong. Maybe the infobox, cover art, and personnel sub-heading could speak for that; if anything the former is more consistent (re: the artist) and informative—the latter has been simpler and more consistent (re: the label). I certainly question my decision there.
The second is regarding the label in the infobox. I originally settled on:
ECM (New Series) XXXX (ST)
which I still quite like. However, someone pointed out to me that the small guidelines say not to put it in places like the infobox for accessibility reasons (makes the text smaller than the standard for readability), which I don't think is unreasonable.
I've settled on ECM (New Series) XXXX (ST), but this looks clunky to me, and can be at times slightly inaccurate. Perhaps simply making both lines large would make it better, or simply moving the the serial code to a more convenient location. TlonicChronic (talk) 15:24, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- These are interesting questions, and I'm not sure I have the best answers.
- Re. the artist name(s), I usually try to use whatever's on the album cover, as you did with The Paul Bley Quartet. But I probably haven't been consistent with that, and I'm sure there are other editors who can provide a more definitive answer.
- Regarding the label info, lately I've been using label<line break here>catalog number. For some reason, I didn't know about the small font guidelines until very recently, so stopped using them, as you mentioned. Also, there are some editors who automatically remove the catalog numbers from the Infoboxes, but I've found the numbers helpful. I can think of many times, researching an album, when I only had the name of the label plus the catalog number (i.e. no album title) when doing a search.
- Thanks for asking - I hope this helps in some way.
- Best,
- Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 16:24, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'll start doing that. TlonicChronic (talk) 17:28, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Album reviews — thanks!
[edit]I just wanted to say thank you for adding album ratings and reviews to several articles today. I didn't find any of those reviews, so thank you — those must have taken a lot of research to find. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 23:50, 25 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank YOU for creating the pages in the first place!

"Add citation"
[edit]Am I being too liberal with my "add citation" usage? It feels like it can be rude and lazy at times. TlonicChronic (talk) 15:59, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- Imho, it helps in that it goads us to cite more accurately, and thus leads to better quality articles. Please be aware that these items will appear every Tuesday on the weekly cleanup listing found here: [[1]].
- Thanks again for all your hard work!
- Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 16:29, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you! I was unaware of that list TlonicChronic (talk) 17:15, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Athimuth '85
[edit]I thought I was tightening up the sentence by removing "expressed disappointment in the album" (etc.), but on reflection I felt you meant that as a summary of the review en masse. I did my best to correct myself, but I worry I shouldn't have touched it at all. Would you mind taking a look at it and restoring it to your version if you think it's better, or closer to what you meant? TlonicChronic (talk) 02:37, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
P.S. I've been italicizing Between Sound and Space, and adding the short explanation "ECM blog", as there isn't a BSaS article. I can't help but feel "blog" is diminutive, but I can't think of a better word.
- I think it's fine the way it is. Please modify my awkward sentences as you see fit!
- Thank you.

Town Hall, 1962
[edit]I was browsing the Blue Note discography, and I came across this citation: [1]. It sounded interesting, and I had a suspicion it was you. That's really cool information, too.
- (context: According to Bernard Stollman, founder of ESP-Disk, Coleman gave him a tape of the Town Hall concert when the two first met. However, Stollman soon discovered that the bass track was distorted, rendering the recording unusable. Stollman took the tape to engineer Dave Sarser, who was able to compress the bass track, removing the distortion and laying the groundwork for the ESP-Disk release.)
I had a question about "Stollman also recalled that Blue Note Records offered to release the portion of the concert not included on the ESP disk, but failed to do so." from pg. 19. Do you happen to know if that's the reason why 4210 and 4211 link to the ESP-Disk release? They don't say unreleased on the wiki, but I can't find any evidence of them existing, so I figured I should probably note it, and maybe used cite your citation ([2]) if that's okay. TlonicChronic (talk) 20:09, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- Wow, I see what you mean. Let me do some digging and get back to you. Thanks for noticing this!

- Happy New Year! TlonicChronic (talk) 20:37, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
- Here's an excerpt from the book Ornette Coleman: A Harmolodic Life:
- "The Town Hall 1962 concert recording that was first announced as a release on the Fugue label also attracted Impulse Records, the ABC-Paramount subsidiary that was scoring much success with its John Coltrane series. It was Blue Note, the most respected of jazz recording companies, that at last made serious plans to issue the concert on two LPs, BN 4210 and 4211, including Izenson’s solo bass performance "Taurus" but omitting one trio selection and the rhythm-and-blues piece. But legal entanglements arose; the agreements with Blue Note were renegotiated and BN 4211, which had reached the test-pressing stage, was turned over to Bernard Stollman; it appeared in record stores, minus "Taurus," as one of the first releases on Stollman’s own record label, ESP-Disk, late in 1965."

Draft:Jimmy Smith at the Organ
[edit]Hi! My Draft:Jimmy Smith at the Organ got rejected. Would you possibly be able to help with additional sourcing? I only have the Penguin Guide for CD—"at the Organ" still hasn't been issued on CD outside Japan—and AllMusic isn't enough. (The pair also might not be notable, but that would kind of surprise me, 1500 series and all) TlonicChronic (talk) 21:25, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @TlonicChronic: sorry to jump in. I use the Internet Archive to help me find books I can't find elsewhere. They have The Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide and editions of the Penguin Guide.
- The authors of the Penguin Guide have cut out much of their content over the years to preserve space. There may be an edition on Archive.org, which has several of the editions, which includes the album you're looking for.
- Check Jazz Disco as well, which I think is a reliable source.
- Hope that helps! --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 21:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

- The only other thing I found was this:
- from Jazz Times - Volume 35, Issues 1-5 - Page 139 via Google "snippet view" (ugh):
- "Smith's 10-minute face-off with Blakey on "The Duel" reaches some outré peaks, while the great organist's duet with Donaldson on "Summertime" is a marvel of melodic improvisation."
- Idk where you can find the full text.
- Sorry, this probably doesn't help you. For what it's worth: in general, I try to gather reviews / ratings up-front before starting a new page. If I can't find enough, I don't write anything.
- Good luck - hope you locate more than I did.

Request for collaborating
[edit]You just edited the article on Hamid Drake which is on my watchlist. Thank you for that. Hamid and I were roommates many years ago. Since that time editing Wikipedia has become a part of my daily life. I see that you are a proficient creator of articles about music and musicians. I wonder if I could ask you to take some time and take a look at User:Buster7/sandbox-Zachary Rapp-Rovan and assist me in creating a quality article. It has been years since I created any biographical articles and those, in no way, required the dexterity of creating an article about a professional musician. Rapp-Rovan is also a graffiti artist which is how I became aware of him through a gallery showing of his artwork last year in Chicago. An article that presents the duality of his creativity is my goal. Any time or collaboration or advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 19:32, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hello! I'll be glad to have a look at your article, but am certainly not an expert. Please give me some time to study it; I can only hope that I'll have something worthwhile to offer.
- There are so many amazing musicians who are barely mentioned in WP... it could take several lifetimes to fill in all the gaps imho!
- Have you kept in touch with Hamid?
- Take care,
- Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 20:58, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
- The last time we met was a few years back at one of his Winter Solstice Concerts in Chicago. I wish I could report that we kept in touch and that we shared postcards but... I am sure we are still good friends of forty years. Your "ask" will goad me into reaching out to him. Thanks for that. And thanks for taking a look at my Rapp-Rovan sandbox whenever you can. I feel I have just gathered a bunch of information and jumbled it all together. I don't quite know how to arrange it. Take all the time you need. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 05:12, 13 February 2024
- Hi. I looked back at some of my own pitiful, feeble work on biographical pages for musicians, such as Jacques Coursil, which I wrote from scratch, and Milford Graves, Marilyn Crispell, and Gary Peacock, all of which I expanded and restructured. My tendency has been to start with a short intro/lede paragraph, then present things chronologically, with careful attention to sourcing. (In many cases, every sentence has a footnote (ugh).) But I started in a way that's similar to what you have, gathering a lot of information in a kind of pile, then shaping it. So my inclination would be to do a chronological overview, then go into detail after that re. the different aspects of his artistic output.
- For an opening lede, I would write something like this:
- The last time we met was a few years back at one of his Winter Solstice Concerts in Chicago. I wish I could report that we kept in touch and that we shared postcards but... I am sure we are still good friends of forty years. Your "ask" will goad me into reaching out to him. Thanks for that. And thanks for taking a look at my Rapp-Rovan sandbox whenever you can. - Zachary Rapp-Ronan is a DJ, musician, record producer and visual artist born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on July 25, 1988.<source> Along with Dylan DC (Dusty Crates) Mamid, he is one half of the eclectic electronic music duo Zeds Dead, described as "one of the most successful electronic acts to emerge from Canada in recent years."<source>
- Then you can rework the material that I pulled out of your version of the lede into the biography.
- One question: how much of this belongs in the Zeds Dead page, and how much in the Zachary Rapp-Rovan page?
- I'll keep looking at it, but those are my thoughts for now. I hope they make sense, and that reading them is not a waste of your time!
- Best,
- Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 19:30, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Looks great. Makes great sense. I will take your suggestion to the sandbox and add sources as you suggest. Don't worry about wasting my time. Collaborating with another editor to create an article has always been a joyful pastime. I haven't had the opportunity or the inclination in quite awhile. I just hope I dont waste your time. - I've made a bunch of changes; moving "stuff" around. Everything is in flux. Feel free to also move stuff. I suggest we converse on the sandbox talk page so there is a history of our efforts when the time comes to move the article to mainspace. Have fun. - Hi. I'm being pulled in many directions this month, so am not sure how much time I can dedicate to it. But I'll do what I can!
- Take care,

- You have already moved it forward. I appreciate whatever you find time for. Take care. Buster Seven Talk (UTC) 14:22, 14 February 2024

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Palm Records live albums
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Palm Records live albums indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 00:03, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

Self-published sources
[edit]Hi Helen. I've seen much of your content across numerous articles and it's a very high standard, thank you for the work! One note about self-published sources: I've noticed a few references to Graham Reid's own website elsewhere.co.nz. We don't use such sources because they are not considered reliable – it's essentially a blog so is not a noteworthy view. Thanks! Cambial — foliar❧ 11:42, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Cambial Yellowing: Many thanks for pointing this out! I will avoid using it in the future.
