Induction hardening

[edit]

Hi, Thanks for contributing a large addition to the induction hardening article. I'm just a little curious about your edit summary because it states that you restored the information from the "original version predating 15th September 2008", however I can't find any of that information in any of the prior versions of the induction hardening page. Was it a merge from a different article? --Wizard191 (talk) 19:20, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yes the original article consisted of the four paragraphs within the "Definition of Induction hardening" section which is now visible as 1.1. I hope that this helps. I think that you would be able to view the previous article by looking at the "history" (Revision history of Induction hardening) then the last entry dated 11th September 2008 --Heatingcity 21:13, 15th September 2008

Oh...ok. I get it. You are saying you updated the article using the previous version as the starting point. I was reading your edit summary incorrectly. I thought you were saying that you reverted to an older version. Sorry for the confusion. --Wizard191 (talk) 20:25, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes well I thought it would not be fair to discount the existing article as it was the starting point. Also I did not want to alienate the person who created it as its only problem was that it was a bit light in the detail department --Heatingcity 21:35, 15th September 2008

You are completely correct. I might add that you did a pretty good job as well. Thanks! --Wizard191 (talk) 21:08, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Induction heater

[edit]

If you think that induction heater merits a separate article from induction heating, feel free to create one. You do not need my permission. However, if it were me, I would probably include information on induction heaters in the induction heating article, as it is standard practice to use the gerund for article names and redirect other forms and sub-subjects to that article (in this case that would be "induction heating"). If the article eventually became too long, then I would make a summary about induction heaters in the induction heating article and give a link to induction heater, where the subject would be discussed in more detail (the article is not currently in danger of becoming too long). You should not feel bound by my position, though. If you do include your contribution on the induction heating article instead of creating a new article, you do not have to just tack it on. You can rearrange and rewrite (citing sources) what is already in the article.

I suggest that you do what you think is the best according to your knowledge of the subject and the rules and guidelines of Wikipedia. For an overview of Wikipedia rules and guidelines, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Before a Wikipedian starts making major contributions, like starting new articles, I highly recommend reading the main page and then consulting the sub-pages, like Wikipedia:Manual of Style (abbreviations), when they come up. If others disagree with the edits you make, discuss your position with them, and try to reach a consensus. If it is an important issue, I suggest posting to the article's talk page and then inviting those interested in the topic to discuss the issue there by posting to their user talk pages. This way the discussion is not fragmented on user talk pages and users who come along later can see what decisions were reached. If a consensus cannot be reached, I suggest attempting to compromise, although compromise is not possible in all situations.

I will be happy to answer any additional questions you have, but please be aware that it may take a while for me to reply, as my time on Wikipedia is currently sporadic. Also, as a consequence of my sporadic editing, some of my knowledge may be out of date, although major changes to policies, guidelines and such do not happen regularly at this point in Wikipedia's evolution. For a faster reply, you could try contacting someone who is active in the subject you have questions about. Looking at the history pages of articles in the subject is often helpful for finding people. There are also message boards and talk pages with both general and specific focuses. Help:Contents is useful for this (the links to what you want may not be on the main help page, so you may have to go several pages in to find what you are looking for). Finally, there are projects called WikiProjects for many subjects. Category:WikiProjects is the main category for WikiProjects ("main category" on Wikipedia generally means the parent category, into which all subcategories go into (note that a category can be a parent category for a subject and also be a subcategory for another subject, e.g. Category:Energy is the parent category of Category:Electricity, which is the parent category of Category:Electrical components)). I could not find a WikiProject for electricity or electrical engineering, but there is WikiProject for Engineering and one for Energy. However, I do not know if any of the members are knowledgeable about induction heating.

My thoroughness and word choice in this post were for clarity and because I am not aware of your level of knowledge about Wikipedia. It is not my intention to be condescending. I have found through using email and websites, especially Wikipedia, that it is difficult to determine the meaning and intention of written communication because it lacks the non-verbal cues (facial expressions, posture, tone, volume) that humans get from face to face interaction, so I try not to take offense easily and occasionally use emoticons, especially if I am joking. Good luck and welcome to Wikipedia, Kjkolb (talk) 03:16, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for your reply. I have created the article and saved within Wiki. I am not familier with how to change the redirect from the current default pointer from "induction heating" to "induction heater". Is this something that you could help me change or even change it for me (not so sure what is involved)? Heatingcity (talk) 10:47, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi sorry please ignore my last as it has sorted itself out! Thanks for your help on this. Heatingcity (talk) 10:53, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again...I stumbled across your induction heating article this morning during my normal sweeps. First, I would like to tip my hat to you for a job well done. Second, upon a short bit of searching I found the article induction furnace. Is this the same thing as an induction heater? If so I recommend that they be merged. Even if they aren't exactly the same thing, but quite similar I recommend they be merged. I'm not very knowledgeable about the induction heating field, and you seem to be, so I'll digress to you. --Wizard191 (talk) 13:30, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inline citations

[edit]

Hey Heating city. I added a dummy reference to the induction forging article for you. I added the references section by putting in the following code:

==References==

{{reflist}}

You don't need to modify this. This propagates the references section with the info from the inline references. This is added by using the following code:

<ref>Citation info</ref>

So you just have to go around and add your citations that way. If you are citing stuff from books the best way to do it is to list the book info like you have in the "further reading" section and then just list the author and page number in the ref tags (like I did on the dummy ref). If you are going to cite a website or some other work then you can use a citation template from here: Wikipedia:Citation templates. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else. Hi Wizard, thanks for your input on this. I have created citations for the artical induction forging and will do this in future on all edits as we go. Heatingcity (talk) 08:40, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your edits to induction forging...it looks good! I'll take the temp off the page, seeing as you have refs on most everything. Wizard191 (talk) 13:08, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
