Re: Hare Krishna markings & Hinduism article

[edit]

Hello HeBhagawan - thank you for your message. The Hinduism article looks much better than last time I looked a few months ago - I was genuinely impressed by the improvement.

1)The different Vaishnava sampradayas each have their own distinctive style of Tilak which depict the siddhanta of their particluar sampradaya. Gaudiya Vaishnavas are the only line I know to include the Tulsi leaf mark. For interest:

The Sri Vaishnavas have two lines representing the feet of Sri Narayana, with a red line in the middle which represents Lakshmi devi. Because the Sri Vaishnava sampradaya begins with Sri Lakshmi Devi, and because they approach Narayana only through Lakshmi, their tilak reflects this process of surrender.

In the Vallabha sampradaya the tilak worn is generally a single vertical red line. This line represents Sri Yamuna Devi. The form of Krishna worshiped in the Vallabha line is Sri Nathji or Govardhana. The consort of the Govardhana hill is the river Yamuna. Their process of surrender goes through Sri Yamuna Devi.

The Madhva sampradaya mark two vertical lines to represent the lotus feet of Krishna (nearly identical to the Hare Krishna style as they originate from the Madhva line). In between a vertical black line is made from the daily coal of the yajna-kunda. In their sampradaya, the process of worship involved nitya-homa, or daily fire sacrifices to Narayana or Krishna. The remnant coal of the puja was taken each day to mark the forehead. Underneath the black line, a yellow or red dot was put to indicate Lakshmi or Radharani. Those who did not perform daily fire sacrifice would only put the simple gopichandana (two line) tilak.

In the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya the tilak is usually made out of mud from Vrindavan. The main tilak is basically identical to the Madhva tilak. The slight difference arose due to the emphasis on the chanting in the Gaudiya tradition. In Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's line, nama-sankirtana is the yajna to be performed in kali yuga, and not the daily fire sacrifice performed in rest of the Madhva sampradaya. As such, the black line made from the ash of the fire sacrifice is not included. The second difference arose due to Lord Chaitanya's process of approaching Krishna. In the Gaudiya line devotees do not approach Radha and Krishna directly, but always indirectly through their servant. To indicate this, the red dot representing Radha is replaced with a tulsi leaf offered at the base of Krishna's feet. In Gaudiya belief only through the mercy of Tulasi Devi (or another pure devotee) can pure devotion to Radha & Krishna or Krishna & Balarama be awakened.

2)I felt that the other quotations regarding Brahman in that section were all from a more or less advaita perspective and it would be useful to include a verse about Brahman from a different point of view, even if it is only a subtle difference in that connection. To be honest I'm ignorant as to what the title 'maha-vaakya' signifies - does it mean simply 'Great Quotation' or is it specifically 'from a chosen list of Great Quotations' in the Upanishads only maybe? Gita is sometimes called Gitopanishad after all ;-).

Hinduism article

[edit]

Pranams, respected HeBhagawan ji,

I am very sorry that I was not able to offer any help with the debate on Karma. I find it too difficult to work on the Hinduism article, because I can't comprehend how it can be anything other than 100 lines or 1,00,000 lines. While I may work on the rhetoric of the article from time to time, I think that it would be very unlikely for me to participate in that article in any other way.

Hello HeBhagawan, this is I Seadog just saying thank-you. I am so glad that you offered peace to Swadyaye. This is one of the nicest things I've seen on Wikipedia. I understand that you have had problems with him and he with you but the way you offered peace was amazing. And isn't this the truth, OM. SHANTHI SHANTHI SHANTHI

Swadhyayee 06:26, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think.

[edit]

Thanks for re-fixing Karmanyeva.. again. I still think that provision of special place is superior over the word "area" devoid of house.

Swadhyayee 07:00, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

place is better.

[edit]

Place is better like special "place in house". Area has varied meaning. Generally used for place other than place in house. In India, in cities the houses are two small. People make provision of small cupboard or wooden hanging temple on wall or use a shelf or dig wall a bit and fix the sides with tiles. The idea is to observe sanctity and piousness. People without bathe or ladies in menstruation won't touch this place. Someone after bathe may clean this place and offer Dipak, flowers, Naivedhya etc. and say morning prayers. Sometime they cover this place with curtain during other than Puja time.

Pl. don't use the word "beg" in any case. If, we don't find any word we can use "Bhiksha" but I am sure, I will be able to frame the sentence reverentially.

I have no doubt about your intentions not to lower Hinduism image but what you think is "not lower", I feel it lowers the image of Hinduism. When you write, you have to care for reaction of at least people working with you. If you can make changes in you, you will be detached from the article.

Chant ten times a day that this is not your article but you are a part of Wikipedia editors and all other editors are equal.

Thanks again for your messages and the award. That is very kind of you although I don't think I deserve that. As for Varanasi, yes I am from there and go there quite often. Once a person gets accustomed to Varanasi and its ways, there is no better place in the whole world for him, but I am unlucky not to be able to live there permanently. As for Bhima's statue, I am sorry that I don't know about it. But if you want I can find out. In fact I live just a couple kms from the Ghats and go on the Dashashwamedh and other Ghats whenever I am there, but this one is something I don't know. In fact even after spending so many years there, there are still so many things I do not know. This is one of them probably. Thanks and keep up the good work. --Apandey 18:08, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am soon going to request an official name change but I have no clue what to change it to. Arjun has been taken and so has Arjuna. Do you have any ideas. Thanks.--Arjun 19:39, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What does Das mean? I have heard it before, what do you think of the name Arjun Da? BTW Partha has been taken.--Arjun 22:02, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Das means "servant of." I'm not sure if it would be normal to say Arjun Das, becasue Das usually comes after a name of God. Arjun is usually thought of as a disciple of God, but not actually God himself (although, of course, everyone is considered God in the sense of the Atman). You could be "servant of Arjun," but some people might think it was a little bit unusual. On the other hand, you could be Krishna Das--but that is probably already taken. Epic Movie

[edit]

Hello, I would love to see some of those epic movies you are talking about. They would probably be very long (the Mahabharata is longer than the Bible) but it would definatly be worth it. I would even like to learn some of the Hindi used. Do you know why the Most people in India speak Hindi rather than the ancient Sanskrit? I noticed you took the barnstar on the disscussion page of the Hinduism article. I also commented on your recent idea.--Arjun 00:46, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear HeBhagawan

Thank you for your kind words. But sadly I need to let you know that a dear friend and fellow WikiProject Hinduism writer Swadhyayee has been blocked. Please take care.--Arjun 00:51, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If you click the history button (the one next to your edit button) and scroll through the recent edits of your talk page you will see an edit by him that was reverted. He was very angry at a user for his comments against Sati in Hinduism. He went to most of the Hindus he knows (me included) and he let everybody know. I don't know if what he did deserved a block but he did get blocked. Below is what he pasted on every user talk page. You may wan't to delete it as soon as you read it because I don't want others to think he is doing it again.--Arjun 01:41, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You are right he didn't know any better. I don't think it is right if getting your point accross to other editors is considered spam. He was doing the best he could. You can check his talk page to see if he got any warnings and how it all worked out. I read that if he apologizes on his talk page than he will be unblocked sooner. I don't know if he will apologize however. And yes for the first time since I have been on Wikipedia the Hinduism Wikiproject has been running sooner, beacause of everybody helping one another.--Arjun 01:52, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it was sad to see Swadhyayee get hammered so badly. I put a few words of encouragement on his talk page, which he can read. Maybe some of his other friends could do the same to cheer him up. ॐ Priyanath 02:33, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I would help you out, but I don't have really any knowledge of Hinduism. - Mike | Talk 21:07, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi HeBhagawan,

I looked at the article as it stands right now and the section on caste looks good. The only thing I would change is the word "degenerated" - I would replace that word with "the caste system of Gandhi's time" or something like that. Is the current version the version you wanted to go with? I will happily vote for it.

Your fellow editor Swadhyahee is upset about something, but his command of the English language doesn't make his concerns clear. What are the issues?

From a Western perspective, Caste is the ONLY identifier of Hinduism. Most folks from the West are going to be surprised to find a description of Caste at the bottom of this article - indeed, I was surprised myself.

It seems like the Caste section could be expounded upon a bit, but I'm not an expert by a long shot. Perhaps a bit about the spritual purpose of the original caste system with quotes from relevant scripture.

In any case, the article on the whole is well written and illuminating. Thanks for the hard work!

Nina

If the Western people think caste as the primary identifier of Hinduism, it is their problem (read stupidity), not a problem of Hinduism or the Hindu people. Cygnus_hansa 02:20, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Magic, Don't be so hostile. The purpose of wikipedia is to educate. If the westerners don't know something about our religion, the helpful thing would be to educate them, not call them stupid. Let's make the world a place of better understanding. HeBhagawan 02:31, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rigveda date estimates

because it's the reference we give on Rigveda, because it is from a specialist, and because it gives a range, not just an ante quem. The dating of the Rigveda should be discussed, and the discussion sourced, on Rigveda. If we need a citation on another article, we should import the quintessence as established on the specialized article. I invite you to add your reference to Rigveda, although I don't think it adds anything new, it's just a (partial) restatement of the communis opinio already referenced. regards, dab () 15:08, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if you know this or not, but the MedCab case page is automagically updated by a bot (User:MedcabBot) which lists or delists the mediation cases as the template on the case page is changed. When you change status = open to status = closed, as you did earlier, you don't need to actually update the case page, since the bot will do that for you!

Gotta love bots, hm? :D ~Kylu (u|t) 03:51, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for clearing that up. So are you saying that I should change the case status on the page listing all the cases, but not on the page that actually discusses the particular case? HeBhagawan 11:17, 14 November 2006 (UTC) (posted to User talk:Kylu, threading here)[reply]
Sorry, didn't realize I was unclear. All you need to do is edit the case page itself. You'll find this bit of template at the top of the page:
{{Medcabstatus?
<!-- Mediator, please change from new to open when accepted, to status closed when the case is closed. -->
|status = open
You want to change it to this:
{{Medcabstatus?
<!-- Mediator, please change from new to open when accepted, to status closed when the case is closed. -->
|status = closed
Just the status= line needs to be changed, nothing else. The bot does all the moving case pages around and editing all by itself. Hope that's clearer, sorry about the confusion! (Kylu@Work) 207.145.133.34 15:25, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks you for your message on my talk. I had wanted to contact you about some issues, but you haven't supplied a valid email, and I think this is too delicate to discuss on an open forum.

You informed me several times that I shouldn't advocate breaching policies. I hope I haven't done so. I have been careful in my email correspondence with Swadhyayee not to support him in those ideas I think are unfounded. He has informed be about several things that troubles him (these are confidential, of course) but I have only seen it suitable so far to act on one of these matters, that was to add the POV-tag to the article and write a message on its talk page.

This morning I thought...

[edit]

This morning I thought to put some good comments on your talk page but landed with your message of trying to teach me Wikipedia policy.

I value ethical behaviour more than Wikipedia policy observations. Wikipedia policy has to have some policies for ethical behaviour.

Pl. note, I have personally nothing against you. This, I am telling you from bottom of my heart and I wish God protect me from sinister feelings taking root in me.

If, you can take it positively, I point out 3 to 4 things to make you understand that our own notions could be wrong. You carry the notion that your English is very good and mine is poor. You un-duly took that liberty to intimidate me in very initial days.

You must have realised the difference of use of "upon" and "on". Similarly, Priyanath accepted my contentions of difference of "good tendencies develop in us" and "we develop good tendencies" and changed the language of the article. Third thing which I would try to make you understand is the difference between "I don't see" and "I can't see". When I say, "I don't see" does not mean "I can't see" as being perceived by you. "I don't see" means I intentionally don't see where as "I can't see" means I am unable to see.

If, you derive something out of this, you will realise that your English is not as good as you think. You have probably not studied British grammar and so you feel my English to be wrong.

By now, you have come to know about my age and background. I have no idea about your background and experience. It is high time that you check Wikipedia policies applicable to you than me. You fail to appreciate that Wikipedia is a free software and the 1st rule of Wikipedia is that you don't contribute if you do not want to get your contributions edited by others. I have never pointed out this rule to you though I know it from beginning. Check, how many edits of mine have been reverted by you. This is due to your notion that you own the article Hinduism, you only have knowledge of Hinduism and you have right to monitor other edits. You have no patience that if something is wrong, someone else will correct it. Why do you want to take the task of putting bell on a cat's neck?

In spite of my repeated explanations about caste, Dalit, govt. policies etc., you kept on saying that you don't understand what I want to say. If, this is true, how are you going to mediate in other disputes when you could not understand my views on our own subject?

You have been dedicating a lot to Wikipedia, I can see your desire to grow in Wikipedia. From bottom of my heart, I am happy about your desire coming true. My urge to you would be, first, you make your self a true straight forward human being. My views about your obtaining support through sock-puppets or meta-puppets and awarding of barnstars etc. without application of mind are well known to you. Normally, a senior has to award juniors. From the date of your registrations, I don't see that you are very senior. Wikipedia policy may or may not have this thing worded. By awarding, you attempt to project yourself senior. Have patience, just in few months you will be senior and by the time you might learn many many things to fill your shortcomings. I know, barnstars are to be awarded upon someone's hardwork. You awarded barnstar to that pearl... girl, Apandy and sfacets. Your awarding Apandey a Zen Star amounted to mockery. Pearl... who removed just one vandal in normal course and sfacets is a senior admin and your awarding him for erroneously reverting one of my edit, is of no value. If, you feel to express your sentiments, you can thank them in reasonable words.

I have seen your false and over admiring messages on talk pages of editors with one edit on Hinduism, bearing un-warranted, un-named derogatory reference of mine. This goes against you. Others will also fit the cap for your such un-warranted remarks and don't think that the editors whom you over admire do not understand your mentality. If you can check their reciprocal messages, at least you will come across one who was shocked at your awarding him/her. All your efforts to patch up with me go waste with your such behaviour.

This will serve the purpose of a bitter pill. If taken positively, you will be able to improve. I am also not perfect, I always feel that I have yet to learn a lot.

I am seeing your pointing out Wikipedia policy, a personal attack. I don't think, I can devote time to read and keep the Wikipedia policy by heart so soon. I will learn with time.

My earnest request to you would be, pl. stop pointing out to me Wikipedia policy if you desire our relations to improve otherwise your efforts to improve relations become "penny wise pound foolish".

With due apology to give my mind bearing noble intentions.

swadhyayee 01:58, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request not to post at Swadhyayee's talk page

[edit]

Hi. As an advocate of Swadhyayee, I have been asked by him to request that you stop giving advice to Swadhyayee. I understand that you only have good intentions, but he feels insulted by this. Personally I think that further discussions between you two will not amount to anything good.

The task of giving advice to Swadhyayee can be done by me, as his advocate.

Hello HeBhagawan, I have been working on the Shakti article and I want your opinion. How do you think it looks and reads so far. It of course needs alot of work, and I need some help (because I am not knowlegable on the subject). Thank you.--Seadog 01:40, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I belive it is the Mythology section that needs the most work. Do you have any ideas.--Seadog 01:41, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bakaman

[edit]

HeBhagavan, I came across this RfA trying to ban Bakaman for a year. If you have an opinion, please share it here: Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/Hkelkar/Workshop#Bakasuprman . If you know of any other Hindu editors who would be interested, please let them know. Thanks, ॐ Priyanath 05:31, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hinduism

[edit]

As I had mentioned much earlier, I have started making bold edits in the Hinduism article, providing references where necessary, to change it from what most people would call unencyclopedic to an encyclopedic, wiki-style. Cygnus_hansa 05:47, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you fine and in good health HeBhagawan?

[edit]

HeBhagawan,

There use to be edit-wars between us however our intentions were always good. You have dis-appeared from Wikipedia without any message from 1st Dec., 2006. I wanted you to change, be less possessive about the article and not be "Ranchhod". I just want to know whether you are fine and in good health?

With Love,

Seeking opinion from regular editors on reference pattern

[edit]

References: Notes and citations section; change in reference and notes temporarily ceased; WP:FOOT says I am not doing wrong; Separate Notes and Citation sections

Opinion is sought from regular editors of the article Hinduism regarding the splitting of Notes and references section. This is a short gist of the discussions going on in the above mentioned talk links: Having a separate "Notes" (for explanatory remarks) and "Citations" (for direct citations), although permitted, is relatively rare in Wikipedia, and also in academic journals. The main rationale behind doing this is to distinguish a series of explanatory remarks from the series of citations (please see Rabindranath Tagore, Demosthenes for examples).

This sandbox gives a glimpse of how the article would look if we split the sections (the sandbox is under work, so may not be perfect). This link shows how the article looks with combined section. This may give an idea how it looked when I started working on references. I converted many references to Harvard format, apart from splitting the sections.

Opinion for regular editors are sought regarding the application of splitting of two section for this article. Please do so in Talk:Hinduism in the section Talk:Hinduism#Seeking_opinion_from_regular_editors_on_reference_pattern. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:54, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, welcome back! The Hinduism and other Hinduism related articles have progressed greatly since your break. It would be nice to see an old face again. GizzaDiscuss © 08:08, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think you have found your "Draft 1" page, so I don't need to tell how to create a sandbox. :) GizzaDiscuss © 10:52, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Chosen people

[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Chosen people. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chosen people. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:06, 11 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
