Paddy O'Brien (born September 13, 1945) is an Irish accordion player and memoirist, author of The Road from Castlebarnagh: Growing Up In Irish Music and creator of the historic Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection: A Personal Treasury of Irish Traditional Music.
Life and career
Paddy O'Brien was born in Castlebarnagh, a small townsland outside of Daingean, County Offaly, in the Midlands of Ireland. He is the son of Christopher and Molly O'Brien, who had a small farm in Castlebarnagh. He attended National School in Daingean, and Tullamore Vocational School, and then became an apprentice for Bord na Mona at Boora, where he worked from 1961-1969. From an early age, he was interested in traditional music, and played in competitions and on television for RTE. In 1969, O'Brien moved to Dublin and became involved in the Irish traditional music scene there.
A product of County Offaly in the midlands of Ireland, Paddy O’Brien is regarded by serious players and collectors of Irish traditional music as one of the tradition’s most important repositories; in a musical career that spans more than fifty years, he has collected more than 3,000 compositions—jigs, reels, hornpipes, airs, and marches, including many rare and unusual tunes.
O'Brien's mastery of the two-row button accordion was also acknowledged through many prestigious awards: he was named Oireachtas champion four times, and All-Ireland senior accordion champion in 1975. In Ireland, he played and recorded with the famed Castle Ceili Band and Ceoltoiri Laighean.
In 1978, Paddy O'Brien began recording and playing in the United States, in Washington D.C., Saint Louis, Saint Paul, San Francisco, Boston, New York, and many places between. He has been featured on six recordings with Shanachie Records since 1978, and in 1988 released his first solo album, “Stranger at the Gate,” on the Green Linnet label. His second solo recording, “Mixing the Punch,” was released by New Folk Records in 2011, and his work has been included on many live recordings and compilations of Irish traditional music.
O'Brien has taught at the Swannanoa Gathering, the Goderich Celtic Week, and the Catskills Irish Arts Week, and at the prestigious Willie Clancy Summer School held in Milltown Malbay, County Clare, and has served several times as a master artist in the Minnesota State Arts Board Folk Arts Apprenticeship Program. He has played and toured with many wonderful musicians, including James Kelly, Martin Hayes, Susan McKeown, Tommy Peoples, Peter Ostroushko, Patrick Ourceau, and many others at concerts and festivals all around North America, Ireland, and Europe. In 2007 he was invited to play Irish traditional music for enthusiastic audiences in Moscow.
In 1994, O'Brien embarked on what was to become a milestone project in Irish traditional music, to record and assemble background information on 500 jigs and reels from his vast repertoire of traditional tunes; the result of that effort, Volume One of The Paddy OBrien Tune Collection: A Personal Treasury of Irish Traditional Music, has received accolades from players of Irish music around the world. In 2011, he released Volume Two of this ground-breaking work, featuring another 500 tunes, this time jigs and reels, but also hornpipes, slip jigs, and polkas. A third volume of the Paddy O'Brien Tune Collection is now in progress.
O'Brien currently tours nationally and internationally as a solo musician, and also plays dances and concerts around Minnesota and beyond with his seven-piece folk orchestra, O’Rourke’s Feast. He lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota with his wife, crime novelist Erin Hart, and teaches tunes from his collection to apprentices, and through the Center for Irish Music in Saint Paul.

Hello and thanks -- I've created the new article, Paddy O'Brien (County Offaly) and taken material off the disambiguation page. I've also looked at the conflict of interest guidelines. I've tried to create completely neutral biographical entries for Paddy O'Brien (my husband) and Erin Hart (myself); is this not allowed? Thanks. Hartobrien2 (talk) 19:22, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
- It is not strictly forbidden, but it is discouraged. When writing about ourselves, we tend to exaggerate the positive and ignore the negative. For example: you've listed a number of awards that you and your husband have won, but have provided no sources for that information. Clearly, you know what awards you've won, but unless that information can be verified by independent sources (i.e. not your own website), it presents a problem and is likely to be deleted. Without evidence of such awards, your entire article fails Wikipedia's notability standards and may well be deleted. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 19:30, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Conflict of interest
[edit]If you have a close connection to (or are the subject of) articles you have written at Paddy O'Brien (musician and author) and Erin Hart, you should be aware that you have a conflict of interest, and should familiarize yourself with that guideline. Please keep in mind that writing about yourself or close family members is strongly discouraged due to the difficulty of remaining neutral when writing about such topics.
