[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Bolo, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bantu. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution
[edit]Hi. I see in a recent addition to Arana Hills, Queensland you included material from a webpage that is available under a compatible Creative Commons Licence. That's okay, but you have to give attribution so that our readers are made aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself. It's also required under the terms of the license. I've added the attribution for this particular instance. Please make sure that you follow this licensing requirement when copying from compatibly-licensed material in the future. — Diannaa (talk) 11:05, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks. I'm still learning. I thought providing the web ref was enough. Couldn't I have just put quotation marks round the verbatim text? Harry Audus (talk) 11:19, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
- That's not the point. The terms of our Creative Commons license requires that you credit the author of the prose that you copied from elsewhere in Wikipedia. Adding quotation marks does not do this. — Diannaa (talk) 12:36, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
- But the use of quotation marks around verbatim text together with a footnote/endnote reference is sufficient and standard practice in academic documents. Harry Audus (talk) 13:11, 15 April 2023 (UTC)
- Attribution is legally required under the terms of our license. Please read the policy page WP:Copyrights with particular attention to Wikipedia:Copyrights#Re-use of text. — Diannaa (talk) 14:31, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

Translation of Φιλοσοφία Βίου Κυβερνήτης
[edit]Hello there. On the Phi Beta Kappa page you changed the translation of the above phrase from "Love of learning is the guide of life" to "Philosophy is the governor of one's life."
There are a few problems here. For one, you erased the fact that it is used both ways. Secondly, the infobox has a section subtitled "Motto" where the translation is still "Love of learning is the guide of life." I possess no Greek skills, so I can't attest to this, but as a member I certainly can attest to seeing "Love of [philosophy/learning/education] is the guide of life" at nearly every university event, with the latter appearing less often. It may be due to Wikipedia's influence, but here are some examples: MIT, Berkley, ASU, and Notre Dame.
At any rate, I believe both should be present. Ornov Ganguly TALK 15:49, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
- It seems unnecessary to give more than one translation when they mean essentially the same thing. In translating from othger languages, there is very often more than one way to transliterate words or phrases into English (e.g. French "Je fais" = "I do" or "I make"; "J'aime" = "I like" or "I love"), depending on context.
- Since you recall that the ΦΒΚ motto is generally referred to as "Love of
[philosophy/learning/education]is the guide of life", why don't I (or you) change the translation to that? Hastings Fenman (talk) 01:55, 3 September 2024 (UTC)- The point is less for the best translation than it is to mention what people use. I'll narrow it down to "Love of learning is the guide of life" at any rate. Ornov Ganguly TALK 23:48, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- If you think both translations are necessary (I still don't), then I think you should explain on the page why two translations are given, along the lines that you have argued. Hastings Fenman (talk) 00:39, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- Point taken. I've shifted to thinking the former is best. This is probably not going to get attention from anyone but us and I've already forgotten why I'm bothering you about this. If you edit the page one way or the other I'll accept it but here's the talk page addition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Phi_Beta_Kappa#Motto_translations. Ornov Ganguly TALK 02:19, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for your attention to detail, Ornov. It may seem picky, but I think all of us who care about the common good and accessible, accurate information are bound to try and get it right, or at least the best we can.
- I'll wait a while to see what your talk page post elicits, then amend the article to align with our discussion and any new suggestions. Hastings Fenman (talk) 01:53, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
