I've noticed your recent new articles on Sikhism. While it is wonderful that you are adding so much information to Wikipedia, I would just caution you that there are some standardized practices with respect to article titles and the hierarchical structure of information. You may find much of your work shuffled around. Please ignore anyone who yells at you or displays rudeness as a result of your additions, as they are just jerks, but do try to listen to honest suggestions from fellow editors about more uniform ways of organizing your additions. Have a nice day! --Dante Alighieri | Talk 20:30, Mar 23, 2004 (UTC)
Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,
I too am excited by the changes you are rendering in Sikhism, and I will soon be attempting to aid in related topics (mantras, maya, karma, some of the Gurus, karma). As for the honor of having gurdwaras in Pakistan, I am the first person to appreciate that. But for an encyclopedia, qualifications as to the privilege of having such shrines is debatable, since many would argue that it is not an honor. Better is to say that "Pakistan is home to some of Sikhs' most honored and respected gurdwaras" or some such thing. See, if I were to take Pakistan page and say it has the honor of holding many Hindus' greatest shrines, many Pakistanis might take offense and request that perhaps I amend it to "Pakistan is home to many Hindus' greatest shrines." I would like to emphasize that the people who have won my strongest admiration are Sikhs, and I in no way meant to disrespect you. I was merely trying to conform to a system of representation that I felt was NPOV. But if you feel it is appropriate, by all means change it back.

Hi, thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you uploaded several MP3 files, for example at Bani, Chaupai, Japji Sahib, and Jaap Sahib. Do you have permission to publish these files? As far as I could tell, the copyright holder only gave permission to download them for personal use, which is not sufficient for inclusion in Wikipedia.
Also, I wanted to let you know that using MP3 files in articles is now against Wikipedia policy. If the copyright holder gives us permission to use the files on Wikipedia, we will need to convert them to Ogg Vorbis. Please see Wikipedia:Sound for the details. Thanks.

Article Licensing
[edit]Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)
Copyright tag
[edit]Could you please add the appropriate copyright tag to Image:Kabiobach Bainti Chaupai.mp3 that you uploaded? That will ensure that Wikipedia can continue to use it. If you don't know what tag to use, tell me where it came from and I'll help. Thanks! Kbh3rd 00:28, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Also:
- Image:KirtanSohila.mp3
- Image:JaapSahib.mp3 RedWolf 16:37, Dec 24, 2004 (UTC)
- By the way could you do the same for Image:Gtbss001.jpg and Image:Gtbss003.jpg. So if there are GFDL we can put them on Commons to be used by all the community.
- Many thanks in advance

Sikh pages
[edit]- Hari Singh, I've been making changes to your page Sikh pages and thought I should run them by you. I am of little help for spelling and such. My small knowledge of Sikhism came years ago from an American who had been in India and admired Sikhism no end, but probably pronounced Punjabi words with an atrocious accent (for years I thought Sikh was spelled Seek). Anyway, the page is up for VFD, and I've been trying to turn it into a useful tool. I think it can eventually be a valuable guide for those interested in working on Sikhism but probably needs better organization and help with the spelling. DialUp 22:44, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind words. I, too, don't check Wikipedia everyday. If you wouldn't mind checking my Sikh contributions occasionally, I would appreciate it. Working from old notes and books can lead to misinterpretation and bad spelling. DialUp 15:31, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- Hari Singh, thanks for the Sikhiwiki pointer. I've been over there the last couple of hours looking around. It's a superior site. If I decide I have something to contribute, I'll contact you over there. Thanks again. DialUp 14:40, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:JapjiSahib.mp3
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:JapjiSahib.mp3. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use GFDL to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use article name or fairuse. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thanks so much. --Agnte 15:20, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I've looked at this file quite a bit, but don't know if this performance is copyrightable - or in the public domain, I'm sure you may know a little more Agnte 15:25, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
I too came to ask about the copyright status of this recording. I am in the process of eliminating the last MP3s from Wikipedia, but I will not transcode to ogg content that I don't feel confident that we can legally use. Could you please clarify who is the source of this content? Thanks. --Gmaxwell 03:18, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
- Ditto for Image:KirtanSohila.mp3 and any other mp3s you have uploaded. --Gmaxwell 03:20, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
New article
[edit]Hi there, could you please give some sort of detail what the article, Sarbaht dah Phahla is actually about? It hase been nominated for a cleanup already. It just really begins with a bunch of quotes, and is generally unclear. Thank you. Thanks, --Kilo-Lima 18:08, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Possible copyright violation on Mool Mantar
[edit]Most of the parts of this article have been pasted from SikhiWiki.org. Click on the link to follow it. Sikhiwiki.org has not mentioned its licensing on the same page and I do not have any reason to believe that it is GFDL compliant.
Please check the licensing of the article that has been copied from SikhiWiki.org and discuss it on Talk:Mool Mantar. --Andy123(talk) 05:01, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sukh has informed me that Sikhiwiki.org is GFDL compliant. There has been no copyright violation. --Andy123(talk) 14:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Bhai Makhan Shah
[edit]I was aware, at least to a sufficient extent to comprehend that which I was reading, of the existence of the Sikh gurus and the Sakhi tropes; inasmuch as my initial comments on the speedy tag, engendered, as well they may have been, by my atheistic tendencies (see, e.g., my ascription of the appellative "fiction"), belied this and were otherwise untoward, I apologize. Notwithstanding my previous failure properly to articulate the reasons for which I believe your contribution to be unfit for the encyclopedia, I hope you will read my entry on the AfD page; I am certain that one may find a different way in which to include the story, one short of the insertion of the story itself. Cordially, Joe 03:30, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
As I've said before on the AfD page, if you clean up the article using Wikipedia:Manual of Style and if you cite your sources, I will gladly change my vote to keep. --TBC??? ??? ??? 06:11, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hello Hari Singh. I have "voted" keep. I think you will get more support if you change to style so that it is more encylcopedic, giving readers a good impression. You should refer to the year in which Bhai Makhan Shah did the things that you have talked about, and then tell us where (geographically) these things took place, how he interacted with other historical figures of his time - a more archaeological context to the article. Regards, Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 06:15, 21 March 2006 (UTC).
- At the moment the style resembles a story, rather than a biography.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 06:16, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- I, too, for what it's worth, as I expressed here, would be altogether happy, if others believe notability to have been established (I'm satisfied), to vote keep and instead have you cite sources and clean up the article (or, if you'd prefer not to handle the clean up, to list the article to clean up). As I explained above, never was my intention to upset or offend you. Joe 06:24, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
I put his full name, "Bhai Makhan Shah", in quotes (not just "Makhan Shah") for a more specific search and I got 138 results. However, more importantly, does it really matter? Google is not reliable for non-English related articles, and I'm more concerned about how your article is written. I'm not trying to offend you, so please don't become upset over this issue. --TBC??? ??? ??? 06:30, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Just a note, when I said "As I've said before on the AfD page" I was refering to my comment below yours, not my first one. Anyhow, good luck on improving that article, and I hope it does get kept in the end. Cheers, --TBC??? ??? ??? 07:44, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
No problem
[edit]Hey, no problem. BTW, keep in mind that they're not "your" articles. See Wikipedia:Ownership. Just wanted to clarify that. Have a nice day! :) --Khoikhoi 08:12, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Re: Mool Mantra and other articles on Sikhism; Re: Bhog
[edit]Thanks for your time and reply. You are doing a great job. In case you have not noticed, I have made an article on Bhog. That article is specifically related to Bhog, as in Sikhism. But, as a Hindu, I also believe that this practice is followed in Hinduism as well. I'd like to know of your thoughts on that issue. Thanks again. --Andy123(talk) 08:25, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- I think you should change the page as you will. But cite the sources and add external links and references as required. And check the present reference links. (Remember WP:CITE and WP:NOR and WP:V) --Andy123(talk) 15:39, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Recent Changes
[edit]Hi Harisingh, I'm glad to see you're back and updating pages on Sikhism! However, I have reverted your changes related to specifying the <big> tag on Punjabi text. We shouldn't really be specifying font sizes individually apart from in certain circumstances. I presume your computer is rendering the Gurmukhi particularly small. Have you tried using AnmolUni? That has very good readability (pretty much the same as Latin text at the same point size). If you have any further problems, please let me know. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 17:59, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your warm welcome.
- Yes, on my system when using Firefox or Netscape browser, I cannot read the Punjabi text on the 2 system that I regularly use. It does not make any sense having this text if it cannot be seen properly. Sorry, the changes that I made on the Punjabi tag template did not work and I just forgot to set it back, hoping to look at the problem at a later time.
- When using Internet Explorer, the size of the Punjabi text is a little better, but still unreadable. I would welcome any suggestion! Can you explain how I use AnmolUni within my browser?
- Many thanks in anticipation. --Hari Singh 18:27, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- First of all, you need to install the fonts from here: [1]. Just extract the zip file and copy the fonts to C:\Windows\Fonts (or on Windows 2000 that might be C:\WinNT\Fonts).
- After that, in IE, go to 'Tools' then 'Internet Options...'. Click 'Fonts...' and then select Gurmukhi in the drop down box. Finally select AnmolUni as your web page font.
- For Firefox, click 'Tools' > 'Options..' and select 'Content'. Then in the group called "Fonts and Colours" select "Advanced...". Here make sure you select Gurmukhi in the top drop down list. Then change all the fonts in the main dialogue box to AnmolUni where you can.
- This should hopefully ensure that all your Gurmukhi text uses AnmolUni. If there is still an issue, please get in touch. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 20:11, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Bhai Makhan Shah
[edit]Good job on cleaning up the article! I've already changed my vote on AfD to keep --TBC??? ??? ??? 01:41, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think it is wise to question whether Joe has the best interests of WP at heart. Royboy and TBC have been patrolling AfD a lot, as I do on a regular basis. About 150 pages get put here everyday, and also note that around 1000-1500 pages get "speedily deleted" immediately at Special:Newpages everyday, due to people putting blatant advertising, nonsense, vanity. So everybody is trying to go through a large amount of material trying their best to keep WP clean, so everybody makes errors of AfD. It is of course a debate, so there are 5 days to fix things up, so don't take these things personally. I "voted keep" but many times people have convinced me to change my judgement and this is no big deal. GOOD WORK ON THE CLEANUP. Regards and keep editing. Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 01:54, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- Remember that everybody also has family, school, university, job, and that we are all scrambling around trying to clean up wikipedia from garbage and also vandalism. This is increasing all the time and we are all getting stretched.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 01:57, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
Hukam
[edit]On March 19, 2006 you created an article named Hukam. It was marked with both a wikify and a cleanup tag. I personally cannot understand a word it. I think it would be best if you would clean it up keeping in mind how someone who is not Sikh would understand it. Jon513 21:53, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Copying from Sikhiwiki
[edit]Hi Hari,
I've been meaning to speak to you for a while about transferring articles from SikhiWiki. It is a good thing that you're copying them over from SikhiWiki and it only helps increase the information. But, several of the articles from SikhiWiki are inappropriate to be simply copy and pasted in. If you could take a few moments looking at the tone of the article and removing superfluous 'ji's, it would be appreciated.
Please also be careful when quoting more than just a little bit of text from external web sites (see Martyrdom_of_Guru_Tegh_Bahadar). Unless there is explicit permission to release the text under the GNU Free Document Licence from the copyright holder of the original text, we cannot use it in that form.
Also, on SikhiWiki you've got several special templates and additional colours in the body text. Please don't use these because it complicates formatting and looks odd on Wikipedia.
Thanks! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 19:27, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your message. I have made a note of your comments and depending on time will try my best to make the changes that you suggest. However, you will note that there is very little added on Sikhism on this database and I only check this site infrequently. Most of my work is done on Sikhiwiki where the user would object if the terms Sahib or Ji were not used when referring to the Gurus, etc. So it is very difficult to create two version of the same article.
- Unfortunately, there does not appear to be anyone else who will transfer articles from Sikhiwiki to here - so reluctantly, I have taken up this tasks as there appears to be very little action on Sikhism on this site - considering that it is the fifth biggest religion and the most youngest.
- Regarding quotes, most quotation are properly acknowledged and I have been going this at Sikhiwiki for over a year and all I have had is appreciation but no objection. Perhaps you do not appreciate that most people who write on Sikhism write these article without copyright and are only too please when these are acknowledge and used by the Sangat
- However, I take your point. --Hari Singh 11:23, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
- If you do have time to cleanup the articles for Wikipedia, that is appreciated. However, if you don't have time, please don't worry - the wiki process will eventually clean them up. I agree with you that there isn't much depth or content to the Wikipedia pages on Sikhism. Anything we can do to improve them is appreciated.
- I'm aware that the vast majority of Sikh sites out there are willing to give their content to sites like this. However, for pure legal reasons, we cannot accept it unless it's specifically mentioned on the web site, or the author submits it, or we get written permission. It's legitimate to quote small, relevant pieces without getting permission, but we should refrain from using large amounts of text without explicit consent. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 14:02, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
Cleaning up
[edit]Many of the articles that you have submitted on Sikhism require cleaning up. I am currently working on them. Two of the templates that you have created Template:Panj Pyare and Template:Srigranth are not suitable for Wikipedia. Template Panj Pyare does not have much relevance, as all the links in the relevant article are already mentioned and in the other articles it is not directly relevant. However, the Template:Srigranth is violative of Manual of Style that is established in Wikipedia. Please consider. --Andy123(talk) 19:13, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
TfD nomination of Template:Srigranth
[edit]Template:Srigranth has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for Deletion page. Thank you. --Andy123(talk) 06:27, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
- The nomination for TfD was not for discouraging your work on Wikipedia. I regret my actions if you supposed the same. The colour of the template, was later changed to "black" by User:ZoFreX. The Shabad is available in the public domain and can be uploaded onto Wikisource. More so, I believed that the use of the template did not serve any purpose, whatsoever, because the same text could be inserted within the articles on which it was applied, without using the template. I request you to continue working diligently for Wikipedia, like you always have. It has been an honour working with you. --Andy123(talk) 08:33, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Guru Gobind Singh 1.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Guru Gobind Singh 1.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. Image Tagging for Image:Bibi snatam kaur may06 120M.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Bibi snatam kaur may06 120M.jpg. Kirpan
[edit]I appreciate the need and opportunity to expand Kirpan, but copyright violations aren't the way to go. You've been around a lot longer than I have; surely I don't have to remind you? Melchoir 00:22, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- In fact, I'm also suspicious of some of the images you uploaded for the article. First of all, sikhiwiki is not public domain, but states that it is GFDL; this important distinction might not matter to us as much as it does to downstream users of Wikipedia content. Second, sikhiwiki might not ask for sources of its images, but Wikipedia does. You've identified images as magazine covers without identifying the magazine, or as event posters without identifying the event. Furthermore, whatever the original source of the images, where did you get them? Copied from a website? If so, what URL? Scanned from a book? If so, what page number? Your own photograph? Then when did you take it? For example, at Image:Kirpan5.jpg, you claim to be personally releasing it under the GFDL, but similar versions of the image are all over the Internet, probably illegally, and the version here is higher resolution than yours, on a site that claims ©Sikh Society Netherlands, all rights reserved. So, what's the deal? Melchoir 01:02, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
License tagging for Image:CIMG0309.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:CIMG0309.JPG. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fritz S. (Talk) 10:20, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Request
[edit]Hi Harisingh! I've got a small request for you and I'm wondering if you can help. I'm finding it difficult to find free images (under a suitable licence) of the 5 Ks. Is it possible you could take such pictures with a digital camera so we can use them on the wiki? Thanks. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 13:16, 8 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! I was wondering if you've had time to get this picture yet? Thanks. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 21:04, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Magh
[edit]Hi Hari, since the details of the Sikh calendar month would be different, I forked off the month article to Magh (Sikh Calendar), and added disambig links to both the pages. Thanks. --Ragib 02:38, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
Gurmukh
[edit]Hi, I'm just letting you know that I have tagged the article Gurmukh as a copyvio. It was marked for wikification, and as the process involves first googling, I noticed that the article appeared at thesikhencyclopaedia.com, as well as the SikhiWiki. Reading the sections above, I can see that you perhaps took the article from SikhiWiki in good faith due to their GFDL compliance. Devious Viper 03:09, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Visiting a Gurdwara
[edit]I redirected this to Gurdwara and moved all the content there as a new section. I think this is useful information, but people are likely to look for it under "Gurdwara" rather than "Visiting a Gurdwara". The Gurdwara article itself was not that long. NawlinWiki 22:47, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

SikhiWiki
[edit]Hi Harisingh. I just thought I'd bring to your attention that the encoding on SikhiWiki is all messed up. You should contact the person in charge and get them to investigate. Thanks! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 00:25, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
