Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Harakeke007, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited was Sally Jane Norman, which appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, visit the Teahouse, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! cyberdog958Talk 10:11, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cyberdog, and thank you for your follow-up. Yesterday I was astonished to discover a wikipedia profile set up for me without my being notified - the author's intentions are worthy but questionably complete sources raise problems for her subjects (apparently her goal is to set up profiles for large numbers of academics). I thus set up a wikipedia account in order to edit and complete the profile, meanwhile contacting my newly attributed mentor about this problem (no response so far). If you're able to check the revisions I've made I'd be grateful. They are accurate and available from publicly obtainable profile information on academic biographies. My publications list is also highly incomplete as it's sourced from Scholia and stops in 2016, whereas my Orcid identity contains more recent work. This reflects poorly (and incorrectly) on my academic profile; I've again asked my mentor for advice to complete the list and await a response. Advice/ assistance gratefully received. I am concerned that fellow academics may encounter similar issues - the author's goal is laudable but the procedure appears problematic. Harakeke007 (talk) 20:07, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Harakeke007 It is clear from your response above that you have edited the article about you. It is against Wikipedia policy for a subject to edit their own article, please do not do so again or you risk getting banned from editing. If you have problems, concerns or additions to the article you are encouraged to comment on the talk page (that's the tab marked 'talk' next to the 'article' tab, immediately above the article title), and give the specific source for each piece of information. That will increase the chances of another editor making the changes on your behalf.
It's great that you've looked at your Scholia. Scholia draws its information from Wikidata, and so any publications added to Wikidata and linked to your Wikidata item will appear in your Scholia profile. I work quite hard to make sure publications already in Wikidata are linked to their authors, but the only tools I have for adding missing publications depend on there being a DOI on the publication in Orcid, and I note many of yours don't have that. As a volunteer I do not have time to enter everybody's complete publication lists manually. Hopefully your mentor can assist you with adding your missing publications - if you click on the 'Improve data' button on the top right of the Scholia profile, you will see a button called 'Orcid scraper'. The tool is down right now but if you wait a day or two it will hopefully come back online and you can use it add missing publications (with a DOI) from your Orcid to Wikidata. Kia ora Dr Thneed. Thanks for following up and sincere apologies for my having gone against Wikipedia policy, which I obviously hadn't - and should have - read more closely. I was surprised to discover a profile, and particularly concerned about attribution of a role that is no longer mine (since April) after serial layoffs and restructures at VUW. Whence my (too) hasty intervention. I've just corrected my ORCID profile as needed. As noted above, I'm appreciative of your work and goal, but didn't realise it was possible to create a profile without notifying the subject. I understand your constraints as a volunteer - and again appreciate this work greatly. Please note that "going against the rules" isn't my usual practice. I'll try to sort publications data as advised (as yet there's been no response from my mentor, though I'm supposing that again this is someone working hard and voluntarily). Thanks for what you're doing. Harakeke007 (talk) 04:16, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
