Because Wikipedia is crowd-sourced, we can't just trust any person who comes along to make a good edit. For this reason, we require the citation of a Reliable source, done properly. WP:Referencing for beginners is the complete story on how to make useful references which others can easily follow. If you cite a paper, it's probably online, and you should give a URL.
