Hi. The layout changes you're making to this article are neither necessary nor improvements. An article with three refs doesn't need to have the references columinzed. And forcing a blank line under the See also section just creates space where none is neeed. If you have particular problems that you think need to be solved, I'll be glad to help, but otherwise, please stop tinkering. Thanks, Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:57, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Portals do not belong in article content, they belong in the see also section; this has been the convention used across Hudson Valley articles, and all articles in general. I mentioned this in my edit summary. The line break prevented the portals from overflowing into the references, and the boldfaced "Notes" in the References section serves no purpose. Your reversions do not address any specific policy, and your comments on Irvington-related articles, in my view, come off as a kind of ownership mentality. I'm referring not just to this post, but also this instance. Other editors don't have to vet their changes through you. --Gyrobo (talk) 23:16, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
Just putting a follow-up here so I can get it straight if I read this in the future. After my previous post, Beyond My Ken removed my suggestion on his talk page that he seek a third opinion (with a mildly rude edit summary), and then seven weeks later performed the same alteration I took issue with. My action was to revert that change and respond to it on his talk page; my response was removed (again, with an unnecessarily provocative edit summary). --Gyrobo (talk) 03:52, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Want to help?

Hi. I just created an article and I was wondering if you wanted to help with it. I used the Page History Statistics tool to find you based on your past edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by S.Örvarr.S (talkcontribs)

I think the page is an unnecessary fork of Comparison of layout engines (XHTML), because both pages discuss only XHTML 1.1. They should probably be merged. --Gyrobo (talk) 14:37, 7 May 2011 (UTC)
Well the XHTML (1.0) didn't really contain any content (other than the media types and combined profile sections). But the main reason I felt compelled to create a separate article was that XHTML 1.1, unlike the 1.0, has gone through the so-called modularization which changes how elements and attributes are maintained. I feel that the article might become unnecessarily long or confusing if the both version were included and then when XHTML 2.0 roles out, if it ever does, it would add to the length and confusion. However, CSS is different in its nature. Between versions, features are mainly being added or redefined so it's much easier to maintain, in my opinion. GA Joppenbergh Mountain

I am willing to do a review on an expedited schedule since I have done the related articles. However, there is a risk that the review may be interrupted due to circumstances beyond our control. I will leave detailed documentation to allow anyone to pick up where I left off should that event occur. Thank you in advance for your understanding and consideration.Racepacket (talk) 20:27, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

I have placed the article on hold, but it requires only a few minutes of your attention. Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 21:09, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Done, I made the changes you suggested on Talk:Joppenbergh Mountain/GA1, though the current status of the purchase is still unknown to me. I've been trying to stay on top of any news articles about it. --Gyrobo (talk) 04:18, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your talk page note and the recent improvements to Joppenbergh Mountain. You may wish to read the this OSI press release about their efforts to renovate the Rosendale trestle. Racepacket (talk) 16:15, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Victims of Communism Memorial - Washington, D.C

hi, i see your statement on the photo. this is complicated: i believe the the position of some is that the photo is a derivative work of the Marsh sculpure, which is a copy of the historical original. the sculptor constructed it for cost only, but i'm confused about the copyright.Slowking4 (talk) 16:53, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

File:The Victims of Communism Memorial.jpg is another Flikr photo of the statue, and it is released under the same license. If these licenses are incorrect, you should nominate both files at wp:Possibly unfree files to get input from people who frequently deal with these sorts of questions. If both images of the statue are not free, one should be deleted. --Gyrobo (talk) 17:06, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Additionally, a duplicate of the file has been available on commons for over a year now. --Gyrobo (talk) 17:19, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
And for the sake of completeness, I'm linking to the commons deletion request for those images. --Gyrobo (talk) 00:30, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Joppenbergh Mountain

The lead image looks much better. Two other things come to mind on a second look. If I were heading to FAC with this, I'd almost certainly create an article for Central Gas & Electric Corporation since the red link draws immediate attention to itself. The other thing I'd do would be to comb the article once more for overlinking. In the Modern Use section, for example, I'd unlink "substitute teacher", "retaining wall", "energy utility", "head trauma", and "parking lot" because they seem either quite common or self-explanatory. Finetooth (talk) 02:55, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

I've unlinked "substitute teacher", but I think the other terms are germane. If there was an article for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation, I'd remove the "energy utility" link, but even creating a stub for that would take more research than I can do right now. If the red link is an eyesore, I wouldn't object to its removal. --Gyrobo (talk) 03:05, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Mike Tuffrey Image

Hi, you've mentioned that the image for Mike Tuffrey's source doesn't state the copyright status - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Tuffrey .

The legal imprint of the webpage states: Published and promoted by Ashley Lumsden on behalf of Mike Tuffrey (Liberal Democrats) all at Unit 6 Hermes House, 59 Josephine Ave, London SW2 2JZ.

I was just wondering if you could help me insert the appropriate tag, the images are owned by Mike himself and are available on his webpage for usage by the press. Would it help if I was to ask for the photos page to display information concerning the copyright?

Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alanmuhammed (talkcontribs) 20:54, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

A request

Hi, Gyrobo! I have recently nominated a new article to FAC: Afonso, Prince Imperial of Brazil. Unlike others I nominated before, this one is very short. This, I don't believe it will be a tiresome read. Anyway, I'd very glad if you could take some time to read it and share your thoughts about it. In case you're willing, please go to Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Afonso, Prince Imperial of Brazil/archive1. Kind regards, --Lecen (talk) 22:06, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

I'll look at it, and I will finish reviewing José Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco. Thanks for reminding me, I completely forgot. --Gyrobo (talk) 03:27, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
I really appreciate that. However, I'd like to ask you to forget about the Viscount of Rio Branco's article for now. I plan to do a major update in a month or two in it. Thus, I believe you shouldn't waiste your time with it. Regards, --Lecen (talk) 12:53, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Please be aware that the use of non-free images in tables is generally frowned upon as being a failure of WP:NFCC. Please see WP:NFTABLE. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 16:00, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

NFTABLE appears to argue that non-free images in tables should be considered on a case-by-case basis. In this case, I believe these images are necessary for brand identification, since only one of the teams listed has its own article. --Gyrobo (talk) 16:06, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
  • If brand identification were sufficient justification, there would be no obstacle to any article having a table of non-free logos. This isn't a permitted used. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:07, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Congratulations on achieving featured status with Portal:Hudson Valley, a just reward for all your hard work. Many thanks. BencherliteTalk 08:29, 21 June 2011 (UTC) (on behalf of Cirt, who promoted it)

License tagging for File:Charles Sonny Liston.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Charles Sonny Liston.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 04:06, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello there, little robot. I wasn't the original uploader, but I did post a smaller version, and now I've placed a valid copyright tag. You may return to your power cycling. --Gyrobo (talk) 04:18, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

How are you?

Hello, Gyrobo. How are you, friend?

Yes, just called in to ask "how are you?" After all, we are expected to be mature and civil people; but mature and civil people visit each other once in a while — and outside dispute resolution discussions or fights! (It is funny that Wikipedians never send each other such messages. How are they expecting to assume good faith in people whom they only meet in the heat of a dispute? Why they don't have a social talk page or such in which they post jokes?)

So, how are you? Need help with anything in Wikipedia?

Fleet Command (talk) 14:06, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Everything is great. Lately I've been trying to edit more in the file namespace to learn more about image policy, so that I wouldn't have to worry about that at future FACs. It seems pretty straightforward, and I have a couple of the more popular templates memorized. How are you? --Gyrobo (talk) 15:49, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Fine, thank you! :) I often rename files; sometimes I improve description pages and correct copyright status. Fleet Command (talk) 11:24, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

FA contender review?

I'd like to bring Empire State to FAC soon. Would you mind giving me a quick thumbs up/down as to whether or not you think it's achievable? upstateNYer 02:49, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

I've seen complaints over short leads in the past, but I don't see a problem here – especially if you stick in a little sentence summarizing the Legacy section. Given its size, and the fact that you've exhausted all sources on this subject, a FAC for this shouldn't take too long. Thumbs up. --Gyrobo (talk) 03:07, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Hudson Valley portal bio

Here's a new bio I authored. I'm waiting for a hard copy of a book to arrive by mail so I can expand on it. But even with what I have there, you could probably add a respectable summary to the portal. upstateNYer 02:49, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Done, and I added a proposed alt to the DYK that will make (pictured) seem less awkward. Though, if there is no picture, your original hook is better. --Gyrobo (talk) 03:28, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Illinois Mountain

Just a heads up; I created an article for the Marlboro Mountains, of which Illinois Mountain is a part of. There are some references in there that may be of use for your article. Also, I had a photo of Illinois Mountain that I was going to upload for the Marlboro Mountains, but since you already have one up, I just used yours. I've never really seen Illinois from the west side before. Looks a lot steeper than I imagined it. Lithium6ion (talk) 22:01, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I can't wait to add the Marlboro Mountains to P:HVNY/DYK. I agree about the steepness, whenever I've been to the east of Illinois Mountain it looks a lot smaller. I'll definitely check out those sources, and I suspect that
  • Sherwood, Warren G. (1953). History of the Town of Lloyd. Artcraft Press. OCLC 5700071.
might have some good info on Lloyd's geography. Thanks for the heads up. --Gyrobo (talk) 22:45, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
No problem. Also, I bumped into this while I was digging up info on the geology/history of the area. Seems like a pretty excellent source for your upcoming Rosendale cement industry article. Since our interests appear to overlap, I'll let you know if I find anything else that might be useful to your projects in the region. Lithium6ion (talk) 03:46, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

IP User: 81.109.92.88

Hi there, I couldn't help but notice some of the problems you have encountered with IP User: 81.109.92.88. This dosen't come as a surprise to me what so ever as this specific user has returned under no more than three or four different IP accounts. His main traits are either incorrect infomation, bad spelling and grammar, poor sentence construction, unsourced material and just general nonsense. The main problem I realised with this individual is how many time you tell him and inform him that his edits are in some way wrong, he continues to force his material on to certain articles. He seems to cling to Television or Association Football articles, mainly Coach Trip and Grimsby Town F.C.. I have been on his trail for over a year and he has been pretty easy to spot because of the manor of his edits that are made daily on the same old articles.

All of his previous accounts have been blocked in some way or another, whether its been 1 month or 6, however he finds his way back on to Wikipedia every single time under a new IP address. Anyhow for your interest I thought I would list his former carnations and check his talk page's out, as I think it's similar to the problems you have been having.

I hope this is helpful in your future dealings with this individual. Regards Footballgy (talk) 22:18, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for this, I stumbled onto this IP by way of a third opinion on Don't Scare the Hare. At first it looked like a minor dispute, but this editor is now removing text that he'd previously tried to add. If he makes another disruptive edit, I'm going to report it to WP:AIV. --Gyrobo (talk) 22:23, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Actually, he's circumventing a six-month block from May. I'll report it now. --Gyrobo (talk) 22:25, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Re:Dates on Sea of Japan naming dispute

Hi! Please take a look at this? Do you mind if I change the format back? Oda Mari (talk) 09:52, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

I've responded on that talk page. In summary: I have no preference on whether the prose uses MDY or DMY, as long as the references use the same format or are YMD. Using both MDY and DMY in the same article, I think, goes against the spirit, if not the letter, of MOS:DATEUNIFY. --Gyrobo (talk) 14:19, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi, this fltyingpig and you welcomed me to Wikipedia with Twinkie (I think that's what it's called). I have three questions I would like to ask, the first of which is: how do you add the Userboxes to your userpage? I also was wondering how one uploads pictures to Wikipedia, but my primary question was about links to articles that do not exist. I have removed a lot of these "false links," but I have worried that maybe these links are okay because they could work as a suggestion for a new page to create. If you want to answer these questions, please write them on my talk page.

Thanks! :D

Returned IP Vandal

Hi there Gyrobo, I am currently monitoring a new IP, 86.31.216.175 that I believe maybe our friend responsible for operating 81.109.92.88, I am lead to believe this is the same person based upon the type of articles he has been editing on, and the amount of edits made in such a short space of time on for example Coach Trip. By scanning through the history you can easily identify this guy's contributions, and although he seemingly hasn't embarked on any visible vandalism I thought I would bring this to your attention.

Other Previous IP Accounts used by this individual include:

Commons template for cropped image

I took care of this with your Rosendale Theater pic, but for future reference you should use {{Extracted from}} on Commons when all you've done is crop ({{Retouched picture}} is what you use when you've taken something out of the image or made serious color-correcting or combined two different exposures). Daniel Case (talk) 04:04, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Didn't know about that template, but I'll use it in the future. I should probably use it in one or two images I've already uploaded, because I get the sense that I've done this before. Thanks for letting me know! --Gyrobo (talk) 14:04, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Sorry I took so long

But I just finished tagging and assessing all the Hudson Valley related Revolutionary War pages. There are quite a number of GAs. Thanks for your patience. BusterD (talk) 23:15, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I actually owe some people reviews from months back, so I'm the last person who should be impatient. At least now I know which articles I can add to the portal. --Gyrobo (talk) 01:30, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
I came across all this material when I was building Template:American Revolutionary War a few weeks back. I don't know why I didn't do it then. I like to remind new users that we're never really done and that there's never any rush, especially when we're working behind the page. I'm glad the work turned out to be useful. I count eight articles added by my tagging to the GA list in Hudson Valley assessment. All but one was a battle, the other was an event (the Staten Island peace conference). if I can help, please shout out. BusterD (talk) 11:01, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
