RE: [Depth Cues] Hi Gwernol, The information needed for you to make a decision, in relation to my first post is located HERE. If I have misinterpreted the copyrights contained on this page it was purely unintentional. I might add this information (Depth Cues) is not new. I’m not taking credit for composing the original document, all I wanted to do was put it all together in one place. Here… Keep up the good work.

Cheers OptusBot 03:20, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Gwernol, Having re-read the information it seems we have both made an error, in regards to my referencing. It appears, at first glance all that has happened to this information is that it has been published on a site that just happens to have a copyright on it. However the information contained with in it is freely available from [Coon, Dennis. Introduction to Psychology, Exploration and Application. St. Paul: West Publishing Company, 1989, the chapter 5 on Perceiving. Pages 128-129]

In imho the "VIOLATION" is invalid considering I quoted a book published three years before the copyright on the page in question...

Uncertain Elephant

Dear Gwernol,

  • I am not Slicky, neither in WP, nor in the real life.
  • I have already read a little about the formal WP policy and do not want to change it.
  • As a great formalist, you cannot see anything bad in the Elephant. You should accept him.
  • Do not call the Elephant "vandalism": This is personal attack.
  • Could you tell me, where I can find the discussion of the "Certainty_Principle"? Does it exist yet?

With best wishes, Rcq 17:54, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the link. I visited it. Possibly, I was not right: you have not deserved Uncertain Elephant. Sorry. But you have not deserved Certain Elephant either...
  • I will award other participants of the discussion in the near future.
  • "...but the unanimous opinion of the community..." - seems, I heard something like that elsewhere... Ah, remember... Pilate said that when crucifying Christ.

With best wishes, Rcq 16:10, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi Gwernol, thanks for supporting my request for adminship! Unfortunately, it ended with a final tally of 45/15/2, no consensus. I may have another go in the near future, once the school year is over. Thanks again! -- getcrunkjuicecontribs 23:08, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

88196 vandal

Hi, Gwernol, and thanks for reverting my userpage twice. I'm curious about the nature of this vandal. It always has an ip beginning 88.196. It always leaves the same message , DIF'S It sometimes picks out something from mu userpage to add to someone else's, DIFS in a manner I take to be mocking. Does it conform to any BOT or vandalyou know of? Should I mention it on the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard? Thanks! :) Dlohcierekim 14:32, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I would not want a range band. It doesn't bother me. I've gotten used to it. I was just wondering about it. Kinda makes me feel like I either did a good job vandal fighting or got just sucked into an ongoing conflict w/ someone who has a grudge against one of its other visitees. I'll probably noticeboard it to give someone w/ a broader picture the info. Thanks again. :) Dlohcierekim 15:05, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi, Gwernol, One does ones best. I was a volunteer in the 1960's & 70's and member of the North Staffs Group. One of our Noerh Staffs group members and a good friend until he died young was Bill Brown, founder chairman of the WHR 64 Company (always know to us as Bill Brown's other railway since the FR was always his first love) I lived and worked in Newcastle-under-Lyme for nearly 40 years, I now live in retirement in Llandudno. Like to keep an eye on things. I also run several websites in Llandudno just for interests sake e.g. [1] NoelWalley 15:34, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Changing a page's name?

Hi, I'm a new user who just noticed you corrected the name of my first article by properly capitalizing the last name. I've been searching Wikipedia for ten minutes for information on how to do this. Could you please tell me? Thank you! --Tyrant007 02:45, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you very much. On the same page I've posted a link that I don't know how to cite. Could you help me out with that, too? Also, how do I set up a "contents" box on a page? --Tyrant007 02:52, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism continues

Thank you for issuing a warning to User:69.235.45.19. Sadly the vandalism has continued after the warning. Now freedom of religion is the target. You may want to revisit the user. Thesmothete 04:33, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Re:Thinking about an RfA

I'll add it to my to-do list. There is at least one person I need to do the same for first, so might take a little while. Petros471 08:04, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Your comment

Have you got nothing better to do than whine at me on my userpage? I don't know who you are and it goes without saying that consequently your opinion means nothing to me. If you want to discuss the issues, please do, but otherwise, I'm not in the least bit interested in your opinion of whether I'm civil, which is not in any case synonymous with "talk to everyone as though they are a schoolgirl". I'm frankly astonished that you wasted the time sharing it with me when you could have been doing something useful. At least read my userpage and share your thoughts. -- Grace Note.

RfA thanks

Thanks
Gwernol/Archive 5, thank you you so much for validating my RfA! I am grateful for all the supportive comments, and have taken both the positive and constructive on board. If I can ever make any improvements or help out in any way, please let me know, ditto if you see me stumble! Thanks again for your much appreciated support. Deizio talk 18:07, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the reverts on my talk page.

Some people just never learn. --cholmes75 16:07, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Something more is going on here. Something that we're just not seeing. I've left some comments at User talk:Louizem, hopeing to get some more information on what is going on. If Louizem *is* the anon that was doing the deletion, then it's a more complicated issue. There's no problem generally with a page's original author requesting that the page be removed. And I would not be shocked if all the same IP addresses and Louizem are all one person. If so, then it's within his/her right to request the page be deleted. Anyway, we shall see what comes of this. - TexasAndroid 18:01, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

user pages and gender

Another thanks for the revert to my user page. Greatly appreciated. On a side note, I'm a "him" not a "her" :-) All the best, Gwernol 18:34, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Any time. Sorry about the gender confusion - in retrospect I have no idea why I used the feminine pronouns, for some reason it was just in my head. --Bachrach44 19:37, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

For reverting vandalism on my user page and talk page

Just a mistake

It was just a mistake. Probably because I came from a dif. My fault. Thanks for reverting.Kim van der Linde at venus 04:05, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

I think what happened was that I clicked on edit on a dif (not smart) and when the page came up, scrolled down while drinking at the same time (not smart either) missing the older version warning. Just stupid..... :blush Kim van der Linde at venus 04:28, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Funnybunny ‘s rfa--

The nom in his prior RfA is the same as this time with a name change. User:The Republican redirects to User:The Gerg. I wouldn’t care, except he nominated Funnybunny with about then 1,000 edit’s the last time. Is this a valid concern, or am I just experiencing Wiki stress and in need of going to bed or otherwise getting a life? Something here just doesn’t feel right. What to do?

What do you think should be done about this article? I'm not even sure what it is. I think it might be a misspelling of omicron, but a lot of the information (like Titans in Greek mythology, etc.) is not in omicron. Omicon has only 724 GHits. --M1ss1ontomars2k4 | T | C | @ 23:16, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

re: Talk:Gah

As a rule of thumb, talk pages of articles marked with {{deletedPage}} should not be deleted because, as the tag says, it enables users to discuss possible changes, or debate on the use of that tag. However, because it is totally unrelated, I probably will deleted it now anyway. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 01:31, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Thats fine, I have more open proxies that Wikipedia doesn't ban then you have edited articles.

Why don't you actually read the information before just looking at a half naked chick, getting a hard on and thinking your going to play god.

Well done

I see you've just withdrawn your RfA. Just wanted to drop you a note to say how sorry I am that it failed to reach consensus. Earlier I had thought it was heading towards a successful conclusion and I was very sorry to see it go the other way. I disagreed with many of the oppose comments, some of which seemed to me to have forgotten about WP:AGF and weren't prepared to acknowledge the tremendous work you've done on Wikipedia. Please continue to contribute your wisdom to WP - we need you. You'll have my spport the next time you want to apply. All the best, Gwernol 23:19, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the uplifting remarks. It's simply so hard to guage community consensus. Perhaps the community as a whole thinks that I was attempting to lawyer my way to adminship. Perhaps they think I'm more concerned about promoting Islam than creating an encyclopedia. Perhaps they think my every action is part of a plot to gain adminship. Ngb stated that Certainly the behaviour you have exhibited during this RFA is beginning to convince me that, without a fundamental change of attitude, you should never become an administrator. I thought I handled the situation as best I could, responding to comments in reasoned defense rather than attacking oppose voters. But perhaps the Wikipedia community agrees with Ngb. I simply don't know. From here, I don't know what I'll do. I'm sure I'll be back to my regular editing, but I'll most certainly take a break for a day to rebound from this and possibly be a bit less active for a couple more weeks so I can focus on ending this school year. I don't want this RfA to bring me down, but I'm afraid the community now has a less than desirable image of me. An image that will never be erased. And I don't say that because that image may dash my chances to become an admin in the future, but rather I say that because that image may dash my chances at being seen as a credible editor. It's simply unfortunate.

Re: Electromagnetic suspension

I agree with you. Also the complete lack of references raises OR concerns & it definitely seems crystal ballsy. I reverted it as User:194.72.50.162, who is a repeat vandal, blanked out the text in question. I, thinking that this was blanking vandalism, reverted it. Anyway feel free to remove the unsourced info. Thanks. Srikeit(talk ¦ ) 14:46, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you, G!

My dear Gwernol, I'm truly sorry about the embarrasingly belated reply, but I realy wanted to thank you for your kind words regarding my message to M1ss1ontomars. Despite we've never talked before, I've taken note of your thoughtful, serious and polite contributions at many places, and this is a great chance to congratulate you for them. Many times we feel discouraged and sad in real life, and I can hardly think we've chosen to take part in WP just to make ourselves or others feel even more miserable. Yet, it happens everyday. I would have been utterly sad to se Mission leave because of his failed RfA; too many great contributors already choose to depart everyday, and I've seen by your words that you share this concern, and most important, that you fight to bring a bit of light and hope to this place. for this, you've earned my everlasting respect and gratitude.

I truly hope that you consider myself your friend from now on. My talk page will always be open to you in case you need my help, or simply someone to share your thoughts with. Kisses, Phaedriel tell me - 00:01, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

My RFA

Thank you for your recent vote on my RFA, regardless of how you voted. I appreciate all votes. I am going to wait until I have more edits in all namespaces. (And also improve answering impossible questions ;). Hopefully one day I will be more sucessful than it was looking, once I meet most user's voting standards. Again, thanks for your time! ~Linuxerist E/L/T 02:17, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Contribution/RFA review for Gwernol

Let's see if I can tick off a few things that are important for an admin and/or come up at RFA:

  • Edit count - can't imagine anyone complaining it's too low...
  • Time around - First contribution 13 May 2005, plenty early enough. Three months of heavily active should also be ok.
  • Civil? No person attacks? - Yes, no problems in this area :)
  • Edit summaries - used, and accurate. No problems.
  • Mistakes - only very minor ones found, all corrected.
  • Email enabled? - yes.
  • Controversial userpage? - no.
  • Any edits warring/blocks? - no.

Namespace review:

  • Article - Lots of vandal reversions, but still plenty of playing around with trains and computers!
  • Article talk - you seem to understand what they are for, and use them when needed.
  • User - fine.
  • User talk interactions - Very friendly and polite- good stuff!
  • Wikipedia- Very good use of WP:AIV. I reviewed a lot of your posts there, and they almost always resulted in a block (one that didn't was because of a backlog that you could have helped clear). A good sign that you know when it/is not time for one. Incidentally regarding this: you do realise that IPs can't be indef blocked unless they are open proxies? Good comments to RFA, AFD and AN.
  • Wikipedia talk: Wow, I've just come across the first thing that I disagree with (NB: me disagreeing with you is not saying that your opinion is 'bad')- adminship renewal. Personally, I think that proposal will be too much work and/or a troll fest. However, the thoughts you put forward have the right idea- like me, you hate seeing admins abusing their power. So no real problems there :)
  • Image: You've been there, done that. Tick. Btw, by revealing your real name your cell phone number (and impressive resume) is just a few seconds away.
  • Others: Your vandal fighting gets everywhere doesn't it?
  • Help talk: Wow, a namespace with no edits :O

Random nice edits:

Summary: Great, why aren’t you an admin yet?! So do you want me to nominate you to try and get that fixed? You said in your original message to me that you don't feel ready for that yet, any particular reason why? From what I've seen you have the qualities needed, along with plenty situations when you could have made use of the admin tools. Petros471 20:56, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok, real life is a perfectly suitable reason for not wanting to go for RFA now. As you've said you are willing to accept a nomination I will start work on it in my userspace, User:Petros471/Gwernol RFA (red link until I create it). I encourage you to work on your answers to the standard questions there, but don't accept the nomination until we are both ready and have moved the draft into the proper location. When you are ready to start it just let me know.
Re: The indef vandal- that's fine. I was only checking that's what you meant (which I thought was likely). As you probably saw I did indef block a user account that your reported that asked for the same thing :)
Right, I look forward to hearing from you in June then. Hope the move goes smoothly without too many breakages (and things lost forever in boxes), and enjoy your holiday. Cheers, Petros471 12:55, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
