Windows vs Mac

Greetings,
I saw that you reverted my edits to the Mac OS versions. I made the same edits to the Windows versions and they didn't get reverted. I was wondering if there is a difference between Mac and Windows when it comes to versions. Interstellarity (talk) 23:49, 1 May 2021 (UTC)

@Interstellarity: 1) I may not have noticed the edits to the Windows versions. 2) Apple have consistently treated Mac OS X/OS X/macOS as a single operating system, with 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, ..., 11 as individual versions. Microsoft stopped marketing "Windows NT" as an OS with Windows 2000, and stopped labeling the OSes with version numbers at that point. They kinda sorta brought them back with "Windows 7", but didn't clearly mark the 7/8/8.5 as a version number, and stopped again with "Windows 10". So Microsoft aren't as clearly indicating what's an OS and what's an OS version.

From a purely technical point of view, there's the OS, Windows NT, and versions of it, starting with 3.1, and proceeding to 3.5, 3.51, 4.0, 5.0 (W2K), 5.1 (XP), etc.. That's not how Microsoft's marketing department works, just as Apple's marketing department renamed their current UNIX-for-Macs twice, and switched from giving them "10.X" major version numbers to just "X" major version number (and Sun's marketing department 1) came up with "Solaris" as a name for their OS+window system+desktop environment combination and 2) started out with the major version number being based the OS major version number minus 3 and then switched to making the minor version number the major version number, and IBM's marketing department...). Repository of IBM announcement sites

From a recent message on the IBM-MAIN listserv

IBM currently provides access to all IBM announcement letters starting from January 1, 1976, from this Web site:

As a random example, at that site you can find IBM U.S. Announcement #285-045 dated February 12, 1985, and entitled "VM/XA Migration Aid Release 2 Enhancements." You can search by product name, program number, or just about any keyword. There's also a link to a beta version of the site with a new user interface. The new UI seems to be a little easier to use for these purposes since it's easier to restrict a search to a particular date range.
