Media-independent interface redirects
It is my understanding that section links are to be avoided in redirects unless necessary; Landing in the middle of a page can be disorienting. Your recent edits to a bunch of redirects to Media-independent interface have reintroduced them where they are not strictly necessary. What's your rationale? ~Kvng (talk) 15:44, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Kvng: I do not get any such understanding from Wikipedia:Redirect, WP:TARGET (which is itself a redirect to a section), or MOS:LINK2SECT (also a redirect to a section).
- My rationale is "if somebody looks up Gigabit Media Independent Interface, they probably specifically want to know about the Gigabit Media Independent Interface, not about the MII in general". I.e., if I go there, I expect to see something such as "Gigabit media-independent Interface (GMII) is an interface between the Media Access Control (MAC) device and the physical layer (PHY). ...", not something such as "The media-independent interface (MII) was originally defined as a standard interface to connect a Fast Ethernet (i.e., 100 Mbit/s) media access control (MAC) block to a PHY chip." with the first mention of the GII being three paragraphs later. Getting dropped into text that isn't talking about the name you clicked can also be disorienting. Guy Harris (talk) 18:48, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
