Thanks for fixing the DYK box on Talk:Hutsonville Bridge

[edit]

I probably should go fix the list on my user page now too, I forgot about UTC vs local time. BTW I'm 5 for 5 now... I know self noms aren't as good as ones people spot, but I'm just pleased as punch that I've managed to get 5 articles selected. When do I get my prize? LOL... kidding. (you can preferably answer here if needed, probably isn't, but I watch convos I start) ++Lar: t/c 15:47, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to comments re:PII

[edit]

Hi Gurubrahma - thanks for your thumbs up on the article!

I've already addressed nixie's points - noted below Saravask's comments. I've had a lot of re-writes on the opener - its bludy difficult to include all the points you correctly say should be introduced. Another user had just commented on the need to shorten the length of the opener. But since the first para does a lot to include the important points and introduce the subject, I don't think it should be messed with - especially as "political integration" is not a technical term with a concise definition. I wanted "Thousands of years" into the opener so that it delivers the full impact of what we're talking about - I've added a link to history of India there, and it has a factual basis, at least in terms of territorial extent. I rmvd the more problematic Mauryan empire link a while ago. The order of conflicts - Junagadh, Kashmir and Hyderabad are mentioned so becoz the chronology is important when one is noting Patel's actions - R. Gandhi explains that Patel considered Hyderabad more important to Kashmir (he let Nehru take over the latter and waited out Mountbatten on Hyderabad before making the kill). Plus, once Hyderabad was in, India was strategically secure as in its present territorial extent (no unusual problems).

Once again, thanks for your help on a piece of work very meaningful to me. Enjoy your break! Rama's Arrow 17:04, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ravi Shankar Disambiguation

[edit]

Hi, I do not quite understand your message. There are a number of links that pointed to Ravi Shankar, that were not the musician. It was my hope to disambiguate these, by pointing them to Ravi Shankar (musician), Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Ravi Shankar (poet), etc. Then, what that was done, move or point the disambiguation page to Ravi Shankar. That way, if editors add new links to Ravi Shankar, they will hopefully notice that they should disambiguate.

I did not make Ravi Shankar a disambiguation page initially, because I imagined it would confuse me in going through the links.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks --BostonMA 18:04, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mahatma Gandhi

[edit]

Hi Gurubrahma - hope you enjoyed your break. The Political integration of India is now FA, and I've put up another article, Lothal for peer review. I hope to have your help on that, but there's an important issue I wish to discuss here: I know that by adding huge amounts of improperly formatted information, I screwed up the Mahatma Gandhi article and endangered its FA status. I stand by the quality/credibility of info, but I know now from my recent FA experience that it doesn't help in present form. Presently, the article is 66kb despite the removal of content to The Leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

I want to solve this entire problem - I want to raise this article back to top qualtiy. But I'm gonna need your active advice and help. Here's what I think is nececessary:

  1. The size should be reduced from 66kb to as close to 50kb as possible.
  2. The "Vision and Principles" section must be reformatted and compressed.
  3. In-line citations are necessary. I can provide a lot of those from my sources.
  4. The "Criticism" section needs to be more comprehensive.
  5. The "Contents" box must be smaller - re-formatting necessary.
  6. Fancruft and POV need to be filtered out.
  7. The Leadership article (NPOV disputed, and I agree) needs either to be re-formatted, or deleted. I'm prepared to do anything to elevate the main article.
  8. The References need a few templates - my mistake of creating another article was happily reverted.
  9. Need to use tools like "INCOTW", etc. to build a consensus on article reform. (Maybe, we will need to re-submit for a new FA nomination...I don't know).

Lemme know what you think, of what you want me to do. I'm sorry to say that in good conscience I would have to vote down the article's FA status in the present state, but I'm prepared to do copious work to correct the problems.

saw the move at mg to mohandas gandhi, was wondering what to do abt it when you fixed it. thanks. --Pournami 06:56, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

need advice

[edit]

i saw that mahatma gandhi was moved to mohandas gandhi by cut and paste. was confused how to list it for fixing. the instruction at WP:SPLICE is confusing. it says

  1. Place {{capmv| NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM }} on the talk page of the article which has been moved.
  2. List the article on this page, under the "List of cut-and-page moves to be redone properly" section.

article which has been moved: that means original location of article or new one? where must i place {{capmv| NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM }}? on the talk page at new location?-Pournami

also, what happens to the edit history of the new article? now, you've fixed the cut and paste move, but the revisions on the new location: has not appeared in the edit history of fixed original article? -Pournami

forget mg. i was asking a general doubt. the above instruction at that page is really confusing. -Pournami

hi guru, see if i've fixed it right, will you? TIA ---Pournami 12:39, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i looked at the preview of what the capmv generates. says:

This article has been moved from NAME OF PAGE THE ARTICLE WAS CUT FROM via cut and paste. An administrator should merge the page histories of the two articles, following the instructions at Wikipedia:How to fix cut and paste moves. Please also list this at WP:SPLICE, and explain which pages were affected by the move. This template should be used on talk pages only. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pournami (talkcontribs)

/* Tripuraneni Ramaswamy chowdary */

[edit]

Thank you for correcting. No honorifics. Yes Sir. Generally! What is generally may I ask? "well it depends on when was the signature from. (I guess it is from Later part of his life when he became more iconoclastic). I do agree that Ramaswamy is bigger than the narrow caste confines", was a comment left by a anon visitor to the kaviraju.blogspot.com

The signature of Ramaswamy very clearly mentions the date signed. Please visit and ascertain for yourself. He himself loved to be known as a Ramaswamy. There is an interesting anecdote to that. But that is besides the point. Don't you think that the tarnished history should be corrected? The future generations deserve a better knowledge world.Don't you think so? Aren't we here on this page now just for THAT?

When one visits Wikipedia she looks for the authenticity of the material that is present there. As you rightly pointed out, the article may, can and or should mention the fact that "he is against casteism" to quote your own words. But are we not perpetuating what others had 'imposed and or attributed 'their' own interests to be his own? The records at the municipality in the Town he was a chairman for three consecutive terms mentions his 'popular' name to be 'Tripuraneni Ramaswamy' not ' Ramaswamy Choudary/Chowdary". When a child is named 'bujji' do you record it's name to be bujji or the one given to it by it's parents or the society that it adopts? Is it enough that one can be called by a 'nick' and chronicle her biography with that 'name'? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anil atluri (talkcontribs)

Thank you "Another thing to note:- If the article were retained at 'KAVIRAJU'..., people would have problems in finding it because they would search for "Tripuraneni..." or even may be "Kaviraju", but never "'KAVIRAJU'". You are right again. Let it be where she can find it easily --Ramaswamy Tripuraneni. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Anil atluri (talkcontribs) --Gurubrahma 13:56, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry you've already notified Jengod, but the item clearly does not meet the qualifications for DYK. It's not even an article.--Pharos 05:36, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't recall lists ever much being posted there, and certainly "list" is never used in any guideline. And I am especially reluctant to prominently feature such a small and relatively unannotated list as this (not that it's the creator's fault of course, certainly this is an inherently limited topic.) I would surely support you on a higher bar for minimum article length, even if it meant a marginally longer interval between updates. Thanks.--Pharos 06:03, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page and DYK template - oops & thanx

[edit]

Hi, I am sorry about the above and thanks for correcting me. My cause for concern was that POTD etc. had a template for each day - all the features on main page except DYK are updated only once in a day and hence I was confused with your original edit summary. I hope you have informed User:AllyUnion of the change to Template:Did you know as mentioned in the instructions there. It is required as one of his bots helps in archiving purposes and any changes in the formatting throw it out of whack. --Gurubrahma 06:12, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gandhi PR

[edit]

The Gandhi peer review is on. I've made some edits to start the problem-solving. Rama's Arrow 16:17, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your views on "Hindutva" and "Hindu nationalism" - I think V.D. Savarkar's formulations (and accompanying controversies), and the political agendas of the BJP are "Hindutva."
"Hindu nationalism" is grander in the sense of (1) Shivaji and other folks resisting the tyranny and anti-Hindu pogroms of Muslim monarchs, (2) Lokmanya Tilak (3) Lala Lajpat Rai (4) the incorporation of Hindu philosophy and culture into freedom struggle and politics by Mohandas Gandhi, and (5) the defence of Hindus against League propaganda undertaken by Sardar Patel. A lot of the "Hindu nationalism" is often asserting the interests of the wider nation against some opponent ideology like Jinnah's two-nation theory, but Tilak, Lajpat Rai and Gandhi also revived lot of Hindu national, cultural ethos. Tandon query and Gandhi PR

[edit]

He worked as the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the present-day Uttar Pradesh for a period of 13 years, from July 31, 1937 to August 10, 1950

Hi - I want to ask you, does this statement mean Tandon did not resign in 1939 with the World War II outbreak, or take part in Quit India? According to R. Gandhi, all elected Congressmen resigned in 1939 when the INC protested the unilateral insertion of India into the conflict, and did not return to office until elections in 1946. For a man who became Congress president in 1950, I consider this highly unlikely as he would have no esteem left in the party if he hadn't resigned. Rama's Arrow 22:24, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding your PR criticism - my edits were to start bringing the article in line with FA guidelines. I did not simply remove material - in-line citations, lead retooling, expansion of "Criticism" are important constructive edits. The material I removed was in violation of FA guidelines - repetitive, POV, unsourced and judgmental. The entire "Vision for India" was importing R. Gandhi's viewpoint. I completely respect the need for proper dialogue and consensus before action, but my initiative here sets a mark of action and seriousness on a long-delayed, much-needed effort. Thank you however, for being forthright and helping me spot any mistakes that I might make. Rama's Arrow 22:35, 10 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gandhi sub-articles and title

[edit]

Hi Gurubrahma - a user:Saiswa has created two sub-articles: Criticism of Gandhi and Gandhi's comments on various religions. While his input/contributions are valued (I've asked him to join the peer review), these are not appropriate, nor is their content independent - its just like the "Leadership" article, only copy/paste of contents from Mahatma Gandhi. Although sub-articles are a good way to solve the size problem, I'm not in favor of retaining either of these, as they undermine the main FA by deleting material from it, inserting POV and producing unnecessary articles. What do you feel should be done? I have nothing against this person, but I feel that these ill-advised actions have undermined the job of cleanup. Rama's Arrow 15:07, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
