WP:Teahouse

Hi Guerillero! Thanks for stopping by the Teahouse and lending a guest a hand. The Teahouse is a pilot project, and we actually have a group of 25 Teahouse "hosts," who applied for the pilot project and were interviewed, in a very similar manner to the online ambassadors that Global Ed has done. we have training materials developed for the project, and the Teahouse actually has a rather different and unique way of approach than other welcome and help projects on Wikipedia. While I can't stop anyone from participating in the pilot, we have a method to the madness which involves tracking hosts responses, template uses, invitation processes and a coordination process that is helping us craft the pilot project. While I can't control the world of Wiki from participating I just wanted to let you know about the Hosts, and we do have a waitlist in case you're interested in becoming one post-pilot. You can learn more specifically about the host role here and more about the Teahouse project here on meta. Thanks Guerillero for helping with that question, and I hope you'll maybe have interest in participating in the project in the future if it's a success! You can always leave input on the talk page too. I hope you understand; again, I swear there is a method to the madness during this pilot period. Thanks :) SarahStierch (talk) 14:38, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

I assumed something like that was going on. I will keep the page on my watchlist and will attempt to stay off of the page. Its good to see that the WMF has a new editor program that works. cheers --Guerillero | My Talk 14:50, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I am glad to see he was reblocked. The indef block that I placed was more for the hounding and disruptive editing then the botched clean start. I wish I was poked when he was unblocked against the concussion on ANI --Guerillero | My Talk 22:56, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

New Page Triage engagement strategy released

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 02:24, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue One - Recent news from the Teahouse

Hi! Welcome to the first edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

Spring has sprung! Stop by the Teahouse for a cup of tea under the cherry blossoms.
  • Metrics are out from week one. Week one showed that the need for Teahouse hosts to invite new editors to the Teahouse is urgent for this pilot period. It also showed that emailing new users invitations is a powerful tool, with new editors responding more to emails than to talk page templates. We also learned that the customized database reports created for the Teahouse have the highest return rate of participation by invitees. Check out the metrics here and see how you can help with inviting in our Invitation Guide.
  • A refreshed "Your hosts" page encourages experienced Wikipedians to learn about the Teahouse and participate. With community input, the Teahouse has updated the Your hosts page which details the host roles within the Teahouse pilot and the importance that hosts play in providing a friendly, special experience not always found on other welcome/help spaces on Wikipedia. It also explains how Teahouse hosts are important regarding metrics reporting during this pilot. Are you an experienced editor who wants to help out? Take a look at the new page today and start learning about the hosts tasks and how you can participate!
  • Introduce yourself and meet new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. New & experienced editors to Wikipedia can add a brief infobox about themselves and get to know one another with direct links to userpages. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, they'll surely be happy to feel the wikilove!

You are receiving The Tea Leaf after expressing interest or participating in the Teahouse! To remove yourself from receiving future newsletters, please remove your username here. Sarah (talk) 16:04, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

You're very welcome --Guerillero | My Talk 00:48, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. I've just gone ahead and unblocked per my comments at ANI. Just FYI. While I won't wheel-war on the matter here, I'm really disappointed at what is clearly a punitive block being placed well after the fact. Anyways - just letting you know. Regards - Alison 05:29, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

I will not wheel war here and frankly you have a glaring COI here, you have vouched for them in the past. The block is part of a pattern of behavior that I have watched unfolding over the past two days. After Night Ranger's first outburst BM encourages to make POINT, then provides information on how to accomplish the POINT, then gives NR a barnstar for making the POINT, and then continues to rub salt in the wound. What I see here is BM taking advantage of an angry user. --Guerillero | My Talk 05:49, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
You provided absolutely no warning whatsoever to BM that he was to be blocked. He'd stopped editing around two days ago and had already disconnected, but you chose to block him for a week. Why? If that isn't punitive, then I don't know what is - Alison 06:07, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
"i hope Night Ranger reconsiders socking, since the ban is only for a week" - that's an encouragement to not sock - Alison 06:29, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Is still removing all mention of archaeology from the lead at The Exodus. He's also misrepresented what I did at American Civil War, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Religion#Seven_Point_Counter_Proposal (which is, um, interesting). Dougweller (talk) 15:55, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Full protected indefinitely and blocked for edit warring for 48 hours. --Guerillero | My Talk 17:42, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. After this I thought I should bring it to ANI, which I did, but my attempt to inform him went awry and I failed to save it. Not surprisingly he doesn't believe me, but I've got over 160 tabs open and sometimes they don't save and I forget to check, which is bad in cases like these. But were you responding to the ANI or my post here? If not to the ANI, maybe you should tell him, but then he'll raise another complaint anyway. Dougweller (talk) 20:42, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
I have yet to post on ANI today and I don't have a strong urge to do so. --Guerillero | My Talk 00:26, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, wasn't suggesting you were, I was wondering if your block was a result of my post to ANI, that's all. Dougweller (talk) 17:17, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Guerillero: Isn't this making a mountain out of molehill? Why all the talk of going to ANI and this heavy-handed "padlock"? when a few editors with rival views are having a good faith disagreement. How about making a little room for editors who do not share just a secular POV about a key topic important to three faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam (with billions of followers) and who wish to contribute more from the ORIGINAL classic sources in a NPOV manner. Any fool can see that The Exodus article has lost it's way and now reads like an article that should rightly be called Exodus denial (see Holocaust denial as an example of how this works -- here are some links to the way "Exodus denial" and Holocaust denial" are linked up: [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]) as if it's sole real aim is to demolish the original ideas and events and replace them with cockamamie prejudiced and jaundiced anti-religious "theories" (at best) and outright canards and Quackery cloaked in academic jargon that's being cooked up as we sit here. Please unblock the article, and let the debate and editing continue. Sincerely, IZAK (talk) 16:15, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Is the above appropriate to post to the discussion at Talk:Exodus? It looks like a personal attack and certainly is going to poison the water there. Dougweller (talk) 17:10, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Hey IZAK. I do not think that I blew up this issue. For the past week there has been an ongoing edit war at The Exodus. As an admin, I have two choices. I can block everyone and leave the article open or I can use selective blocking and lock the article. I chose the latter option because I believed that it would force people into discussion. The article as it stands is disliked by both sides of this dispute. This is the best position for everyone because it forces the give and take that wikipedia articles need. The article reads like it is discussing a real event and not an event from the torah. If the first option is chosen, by consensus, then the text should be split per the coverage in the sources available (Wikipedia:NPOV/FAQ#Religion may be of some help here). Just as a side note, I have no personal feelings about this topic. I am an agnostic theist that grew up in an evangelical christian church and have attended Synagogue my fair share of times. I can see this situation from both POVs.--Guerillero | My Talk 21:28, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Guerillero: I really do appreciate this response and I am very relieved that you speak and function fairly. At least I get where you are coming from now. Thanks again, and I look forward to seeing more of your involvement! Sincerely, IZAK (talk) 08:10, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
The sandbox version of the exodus article has been moved to Talk:The_Exodus/Draft.Quarkgluonsoup (talk) 15:59, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Guerillero: I made a comment on the exodus talk page concerning the current status of the article. I think it should remain locked, since given past experience I think the current lock forces movement towards a consensus, which will be lost (probably into more in-fighting) if it is unlocked just yet.Quarkgluonsoup (talk) 15:42, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Pipe-trick wrinkle

You summarized in part "the link can not be piped for some reason". I think any valid link can be piped (by specifying explicitly what text you want displayed), but it is the pipe trick whose applicability is limited: the syntax where the "pipe character" is immediately followed by the two close-bracket chars will suppress display of the name of the explicitly specified namespace, or of the parentheses and their contents if the title ends with that structure. It may or not be documented that (as i assume) those are in practice the only "pipe-trick" cases, tho i occasionally forget and use the format even tho i've specified a target section. Whatever the real reason, i'm helped by the mnemonic of hinting that when you specify both, the parser can't be sure whether it's the page name or the section name whose display you're asking to have suppressed.
