Coordinates

[edit]

Hi .. quick query re coordinates, as you appear expert in them. Why are they helpful (I might be interested in availing myself of their helpfulness), and how does one quickly find them to add them to an article? Many thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 23:10, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinates add context to an article and icons appear on google earth (eventually). I use google images, Bing birdseye view and google streetview to cross reference locations. Then I centre google maps on the location and copy this code into the address bar and press enter

javascript:void(prompt('',"{{coord|" + gApplication.getMap().getCenter().lat() + "|" + gApplication.getMap().getCenter().lng() + "}}"));

Then I copy the text out of dialogue box, paste it into the article and trim the coordinates to appropriate accuracy (usually 4 decimal places for a building). Grim23 17:41, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for the helpful response.--Epeefleche (talk) 17:47, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trumpers Crossing co-ords

[edit]

I have no reference to hand but I wonder if the location you have just given for Trumpers Crossing Halt is correct as it is NW of where Trumpers Way meets the railway and Trumpers Way seems to have the only bridge over the canal.--SilasW (talk) 15:45, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found the location on the old OS map link[1] from the Geohack page. Grim23 16:00, 1 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wondering... On what basis do you consider this edit to represent a misunderstanding of state capitalism? Pinkville (talk) 05:43, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've always understood state capitalism to be a term criticising soviet style communism. After your query, I found this article [2] where Chomsky uses the term in a wider sense, but I think he's making a point about semantics. I now see it might not be a "misunderstanding", although I do think it could be a misleading term to use. Grim23 06:50, 4 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

All the references are publically available. All you have to do is visit any UK public library and find a big book with a red cover. Or ask at the desk, 'can I have the big book with the red cover?'

Odd edit

[edit]

Hi, did you really mean to do this? ϢereSpielChequers 16:34, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please accept my apologies, I remember reading your talkpage but can't think how this happened. On an unrelated point, could you tell me whether it is possible to find out who granted an editor autoreviewer rights? Thankyou. Grim23 16:53, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, glitches happen. As for Autoreviewer, just look at the log, Special:UserRights/WereSpielChequers in my case. Is it someone who you don't think should be an autoreviewer? ϢereSpielChequers 17:03, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was curious about DinosaursLoveExistence, after I asked him about referencing I received the above sarcastic reply. He's been creating a lot of content, so I wanted to know who had that confidence in him, just for my own interest. (PS When I clicked on your link I got a permission error, so perhaps that information is for admin eyes only) Grim23 17:20, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing that out. By the way I see you are in wikiproject London, have you been to the Oak yet the Oak yet? Though I think I won't make another till June. ϢereSpielChequers 17:45, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've been meaning to go for a while. I'm usually nursing a hangover on Sundays, but I'll try and make it down soon, maybe see you in June. Cheers for looking into my concerns. Grim23 18:11, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&page=User:Grim23 --MZMcBride (talk) 18:03, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's just what I was looking for. Thankyou MZMcBride. Grim23 18:16, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Revertion?!

[edit]

Thanks for reverting my edit, numbnut. The next time you revert someone's edits, would you please be so kind as to include WHY in your description, so that we mortals may be enlightened to the tick-tocking of your reasoning?

That'd be swell.

Thanks.

Nimloth250 (talk) 15:58, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Nimloth250[reply]

Hi Nimloth250, I reverted your edit[3] because in my view it was a blatantly unproductive (see WP:POV). PS Please can you rephrase your question or strike through the personal insult. Grim23 16:24, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, good to know your take on the situation - and I like to know why people do their particular edits especially when it comes to reverting (I believe that's why we have the edit description boxes). Not going to start an edit war here, so no reverting on my part. Sorry, but don't know how to do strikethrough. Nimloth250 (talk) 19:40, 7 May 2010 (UTC)Nimloth250[reply]

A request

[edit]

I was wondering if you could help? I see you've taken lots of pics round Horsham. I need a photo of the Capitol, Horsham to go with the Embrace Life article (the short public information film was premiered there). Any chance you could snap one next time you are out and about? Thanks Stronach (talk) 07:36, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I'll be down there next month. Grim23 17:24, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Great, look forward to seeing it. Thanks. Oh - I meant to add: if you are around Brighton and Hove and come across any of the Embrace Life graffiti logos, a snap or two of those would be great too ... Stronach (talk) 12:54, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded a picture of the graffiti logo here,(I have pictures of two more sites, but the photos are a bit dark) I should be able to get a picture of the capitol soon. Grim23 18:33, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's great, thanks Grim. Have added to the article. Thanks again, and look forward to seeing the Capitol ones in time. Stronach (talk) 11:37, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

National Space Centre

[edit]

Hello,

I noticed that you have deleted my additions to the National Space Centre page citing that I used copyrighted material with out permission. I do actually work at the National Space Centre and was given full permission to use what ever I wanted. Is there another form of permission I need. What do I need to do to stop changes to the National Space Centre page being deleted again? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidbspace (talkcontribs) 10:28, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Davidspace, there are instructions on how get copyright permission here. I don't think the text as it stands is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia. The text has a promotional tone and some of the language is quite "flowery", it might be better to have a straightforward encyclopedic description of the gallery contents. As you work at the centre you might have a conflict of interest, so it might be better if you discuss changes you want to make on the article's talkpage. I hope this answers your question. (btw to sign your comments type four tildes like this ~~~~) Grim23 13:31, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinates

[edit]

I see you are an expert on adding coordinates. There are none on Scratchwood and Moat Mount Local Nature Reserve and Totteridge Fields. Can you help? Thanks. Dudley Miles (talk) 11:18, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've added both of those coordinates, if you find any more articles needing coordinates I would be happy add them too. Grim23 13:19, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. St Oswald's Priory, Gloucester is missing coordinates and categories. Dudley Miles (talk) 16:25, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

 Done Grim23 18:27, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for putting in coordinates on my two new articles on Rowley Green and Woodridge. There is one more, Barnet Gate Wood. Dudley Miles (talk) 22:42, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a new page, Nature reserves in Barnet, a table of reserves listed in Barnet on the Mayor of London's Wildweb. I have put in coordinates for the few sites where I found Wikipedia articles I could paste them from. The Wildweb site is very good, but its one weakness is in giving the location of sites, with only an illegible map, so I have put in whatever location I could find from Google etc. It will be quite a large job, but could you look at the page and check the locations and put in the missing coordinates? Thanks. Dudley Miles (talk) 23:55, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of King George V Playing Fields in London

[edit]

List of King George V Playing Fields in London is a table which has a column for National Grid Reference, but when you click on it you get an error message. There is not enough detail for coordinates, so would it be best to delete the column? Dudley Miles (talk) 21:20, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Today, I clicked on the grid references it took me to the correct Geohack page, (although when I clicked on the globe icon, it took me to Miniwiki atlas which has never worked properly for me). If you click on the grid reference does it work now? Grim23 16:12, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It works fine now. Thanks for your help. By the way, I am working on the locations in Nature reserves in Barnet and should be able to get them right in a few days. Dudley Miles (talk) 17:05, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More pages needing coordinates

[edit]

I have created these pages in the last few weeks which do not have coordinates: Dumeir (Syria), Copthall Railway Walk and Copthall Old Common, Monken Hadley Common, Oak Hill Park (East Finchley), Oak Hill Wood, and Rowley Lodge Field. Thanks if you have time to add coordinates. Dudley Miles (talk) 22:33, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. Grim23 21:19, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that, and for correcting my error with Oak Hill Park. I have now created Mill Hill Substation Pastures. Dudley Miles (talk) 16:32, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agressive anti-Serbian edit removals, lack of civility etc.

[edit]

I have added references for the part that you keep deleting. Your hostility towards edits that are based on a bit more local knowledge than that of a person from far away, is noted. As you certainly know full well, not every bit of information added to wikipedia is referenced, and not every bit that is not sourced needs to be savagely deleted. These facts are well known in Serbia where they had huge media cover, and you could have easily googled the sources and checked the facts yourself, if you had any shred of good faith and civil decency. But no, you had to attack and remove edits, post notices, and behave like some smart alec. If you think you can intimidate people, who you obviously profoundly disrespect, think again. And as you hand wave NPOV and other policies as some sort of ultimate authority, you must be also aware that you need to keep your political, colonial, racist, sexist or any other sort of bias that you might have under control. That goes for deeply seated prejudices too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.121.81.183 (talk) 20:02, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello I'm sorry if I have appeared uncivil or aggressive. The trouble is, if you are using your local knowledge it needs to be backed up by reliable sources. Although you are correct that not all information on Wikipedia is sourced, the burden of evidence lies with the editor who added the information. Information without a reliable source directly supporting it can be deleted by anyone. You mention the notices I left on your talkpage, the first one I left welcomed you and assumed good faith and the second was neutral. You say NPOV should not be used as "some sort of ultimate authority", but adhering to a neutral point of view IS one the five core policies of Wikipedia. Another of the five core policies is civility. I believe you have overstepped the mark with some of you assertions about my character in your above message, please could you strike through or delete them, and restrict your comments to improving the encyclopedia. Later I will be more specific about how I think the article can be improved on its talkpage Talk:Belgrade anti-gay riot but I don't have time too right now. Grim23 21:45, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

More pages needing coordinates (again)

[edit]

St Symeon, Seleucia Pieria (non-standard coordinates), Deans Brook, Stoneyfields Park, Edgware Way Grassland, Mill Hill Old Railway Nature Reserve, Totteridge Common, Totteridge Green. Tell me if I am over-loading you. Thanks. Dudley Miles (talk) 23:49, 19 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

St Symeon/Seleucia Pieria

[edit]

The List of ancient Greek cities shows St Symeon (the Crusader port of Antioch) as another name for Seleucia Pieria (the Roman port of Antioch). I am almost sure this is wrong, and they were too different places, and I have posted a question on Orionist's talk page to ask whether he can confirm. Steven Runciman in his history of the First Crusade gives Suadiye as the modern name for St Symeon, and I now see that the OWTRAD Gazeteer at http://www.ciolek.com/OWTRAD/gazetteer-05.html has entries

"St Symeon","Samandagi","current settlement","TR","Runciman 1978a: 216","35.933334","36.116669","ADL4101387","exact","exact","140"

"Suadiye","Samandagi","current settlement","TR","Runciman 1978a: 216","35.933334","36.116669","ADL4101387","exact","exact","140"

Can you advise whether this helps to solve the question? Thanks. Dudley Miles (talk) 22:30, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orionist has found that St Symeon is now the village of Samandağ, so I have copied the Samandağ coordinates to St Symeon. Thanks. Dudley Miles (talk) 23:13, 30 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

AIV reports of IP editors

[edit]

Regarding this report, we don't normally block IP editors unless they have gotten the full spate of warnings recently and are vandalizing now. This guy's last vandalism was about 12 hours ago, so it needs the full series of warnings. If the IP is not vandalizing now, there is no way of knowing if the IP has since changed (this one appears dynamic based on contributions) and thus a block would have no effect on the person that was actually using that IP to vandalize. Template:Uw-aiv is the boilerplate if you want to read that, too.--Chaser (talk) 04:25, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. Grim23 04:31, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't mind being corrected

[edit]

But please refrain from using bots or cut and paste text as you recently did on my talk page. Please spell out what you are taking exception to, as I can not correct the behavior you found inappropriate without understanding why. Your cryptic comment about my failing to use the correct nationalization of language is completely lost on me, as all I did was add citations to an article. Thank you. vulture19 04:43, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vulture, it would have been better if I had used a personalised message for a regular user such as yourself, I used a template notification because it assumed good faith and explained the policy. This is the edit [4] I was concerned about, the British spelling 'modelled' was changed to the US spelling 'modeled', it probably looked like a spelling mistake. I will delete the notification from your talkpage, and please except my apologies for the confusion. Grim23 20:12, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, and thank you. I legitimately had no idea what the correction was about. vulture19 05:42, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
